T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong

Theses : Honours

In his elaborative Landbridge 'statement of intent', Western Australian and International poet John Kinsella - whose phenomenal rise since the '90s is now a worldwide literary success story that needs no introduction - asserts a profound interest for the 'pastoral radical' (Kinsella, ed. Kinsella, Landbridge, 1999): “I'm particularly interested in the 'pastoral radical'- in blending the so-called pastoral tradition with the lingui.stically innovative. This 'hybrid' ironises the pastoral construct but allows for genuine movement through rural spaces. Landscape is central to my project - ways of seeing, questions of occupation and space, the position and relevance of the so-called 'lyrical …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An Equal Educational Opportunity for Language Minority Students: A Legal Analysis of Language Education After Lau is a legal/historical study that examined the current legal standards applicable to the education of language minority students in the United States. This was achieved by analyzing the jurisprudence emerging from the interpretation and application of the Lau v. Nichols been interpreted and applied by subsequent law cases involving the education of language minority students? What role has the …

Examining Democratic Ideals: A Case Study Of Dialogic Interactions Of Fifth -Grade Citizens, Jeanne Ann Klockow

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Four overarching questions guided the purpose of this study: (1) to examine the role of dialogic and social interactions in the classroom setting when constructing a democratic classroom, (2) to explore whether the dialogic co-construction of a democratic classroom community supported student learning and student ownership of learning in the classroom, (3) to investigate how the use of classroom dialogue facilitated meaning about classroom community membership and citizenship for students in a democratic classroom community, and (4) evaluate the effects and influences a democratic classroom community had on students; The study was a qualitative case study utilizing a cultural model …

A Comparative Study Of State Educational *Policies: Systemic Models Of Equitable Reform, Celeste Ann Jackson Stansberry Jan 2002

A Comparative Study Of State Educational *Policies: Systemic Models Of Equitable Reform, Celeste Ann Jackson Stansberry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Substantive attention to disproportionate gaps in achievement between minorities and non-minorities has led state educational agencies to institute responsive policy mandates. The implementation of equity and multicultural policies has resulted in the development of strategies and evaluative measures that assist in building capacity within educational environments to meet the needs of diverse groups of students. This comparative case study examines the ways in which two states have addressed issues of low educational attainment among ethnic and linguistic minority students by instituting equity policy mandates. The two state departments of education have reached out to stakeholders, developed action plans, and attempted …

Token Economy Used To Increase Performance In Solving Algebra Problems For High School Students, Kari Mankes Maes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of using a token economy approach to increase the performance in solving algebra homework quizzes for two high school boys. The program included tokens that could be redeemed for candy or extra credit points to encourage the students to try harder to check over their answers on homework quizzes before handing them in to be graded. Permanent product was used to record the scores of the homework quizzes and a comparison of baseline data and intervention data was done with a reversal design. The results showed that the students did …

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg Jan 2002

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis proposes that US policy is structurally flawed toward Iraq and the Middle East in general. This structural flaw in US policy-making is a result of ignoring the regional considerations of the Middle East as a subsystem. Current US strategy toward Iraq is doomed to fail because of the unique structural considerations in the Middle East and the failure of policy-makers to recognize them; The thesis begins with a theoretical examination of the Middle East subsystem, based on principles from international systems theory. Several patterns of regularity that define the subsystem are then outlined. An assessment of US goals …

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter Jan 2002

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research on remedial reading programs has a controversial history. Although extensive research has been conducted on pull-out programs, far less research has evaluated remedial reading programs within the regular classroom. This study investigated whether using the basal or a new program, Project STARS, would produce reading gains in intermediate remedial readers. It was hypothesized that Project STARS subjects would show a greater academic gain in three areas. To evaluate this hypothesis, 46 students were assessed in August and December to determine the amount of growth for each student after instruction in either the Project STARS method or the basal text. …

The Nightingale Sings Anew: The Appropriation Of Antiquity In Virginia Woolf's "The Waves", Neta Luree Hoff Jan 2002

The Nightingale Sings Anew: The Appropriation Of Antiquity In Virginia Woolf's "The Waves", Neta Luree Hoff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis considers the impact of classical antiquity on the literary aesthetic of Virginia Woolf by focusing on the educational and theoretical assumptions that allowed Woolf to create her most experimental work, The Waves. Inspired by her brother Thoby Stephen and her tutor Janet Case, Woolf enjoyed a very strong and fertile relationship with the writers of antiquity, and she continued to return to them throughout her life for both conceptual and structural models. In her essays on the Greeks in particular, Woolf praises the ancients for achieving those things that she so longs to see accomplished in the works …

Unveiling The Implicit Message: A Look At Racial, Hispanic/Latino, And Mexican Portrayals On "Sesame Street", Magdalena Maria Zepeda

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this master's thesis I analyzed Sesame Street, a well-known and popular model for many children's educational television programs as well as a racially sensitive show, by way of a content analysis. I documented all races represented by the people and human-looking, animated characters and puppets. Furthermore, my study proposed to look at the portrayal of the Hispanic/Latino group and Mexican group; My findings revealed that the population on Sesame Street did not mirror the United States population distribution. Other results revealed the Hispanic/Latino group very rarely reflected their cultural customs, were mostly female and the majority was portrayed in …

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill

Theses

This paper examines the dynamics involved in Christian community, paying particular attention to the pivotal role leadership plays in nurturing and sustaining the life of the community. It begins by analysing the human need for community if people are to fulfill their potential both individually and communally. Time is devoted to understanding Christian community from a Scriptural perspective and a caution is sounded not to envisage Christian community in purely mechanistic terms. The doctrine of the trinity of God is used as a lens to view vital characteristics in the life of a Christian community. The theology of leadership is …

On Apology And Consilience, Erin O'Connor Jan 2002

On Apology And Consilience, Erin O'Connor

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article chimes in on the current debate about the proper relationship between apology and the law. Several states are considering legislation designed to shield apologies from the courtroom, and mediators are increasing their focus on the importance of apologies. The article develops an evolutionary economic analysis of apology that combines the tools of economics, game theory and biology to more fully understand its role in dispute resolution. When the analysis is applied to the uses of apology before and at trial, a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between apology and the law emerges.

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen Jan 2002

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal Skousen explains in detail the internal consistency of the original text of the Book of Mormon. He references several verses of the Book of Mormon to discuss five main points: consistency in meaning; systematic phraseology; variation in the text; conjectural emendation; and revising the text. By examining these five aspects, Skousen shows that neither the message nor the doctrine of the Book of Mormon loses credibility as a result of textual changes. Skousen also mentions that the consistency in the manuscripts suggests that Joseph Smith did not receive the text as a concept but rather received it word for …
