Word Neighbours And Onalosis, Rex Gooch
Word Neighbours And Onalosis, Rex Gooch
Word Ways
This article is a partial update of my "Statistics of Word Neighbours" in the November 1997 Word Ways, and provides the facts laying behind the findings in the recent series (August 2000 through May 2001) of articles on word ladders. Two words are neighbours if they differ in a single letter. In this article, each such word is credited as having a neighbour, i.e. the link between them in counted twice (please refer to the earlier article for prior work and more information). The following table updates various parts of the article.

Word Ways
The idea of searching existing for accidental windows (contiguous blocks of text) having special properties has been explored often in Word Ways, but previous studies have usually considered letter-unit constraints such as the lipogram or pangram. In this article, inspired by similar explorations in the new edition of Opperlands! Taal- & letterkunde (Battus' seminal book on Dutch wordplay), we focus on textual windows having special word-unit properties.

Word Ways
AEIOU Words, those which contain just one each of the 5 major vowels, have always held a fascination for logologists, especially those words in which the 5 vowels appear in alphabetical order (AEIOU), and reverse alphabetical order (UOIEA), respectively. FACETIOUS and SUBCONTINENTAL are examples. Below, I offer a substantial addition to the collections of these words which have already appeared in Word Ways. Most of them are the names of locations taken from The United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN). These are populated places unless stated otherwise. Let us begin by taking a brief look at the current state …
The Battles Over Swiss Liberty, Marc H. Lerner
The Battles Over Swiss Liberty, Marc H. Lerner
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Between the French Revolution and the Revolutions of 1848, the European conception of freedom and liberty changed dramatically. Likewise with Switzerland, between the Helvetic Republic and the Sonderbund war of 1847, the conceptions of true Swiss liberty underwent radical alteration. In Zurich, Schwyz and Vaud a growing individualistic sense of liberty challenged a collective sense of freedom. To some extent an emphasis on guaranteed individual rights replaced the emphasis on local autonomy and self-rule. The changing understandings of Freiheit or liberte in Zurich, Schwyz and Vaud reflect the changes that occurred throughout Switzerland as well as Europe. The battle over …
The Virtue Of Vagueness In Takings Doctrine, Marc R. Poirier
The Virtue Of Vagueness In Takings Doctrine, Marc R. Poirier
Cardozo Law Review
In discussions of regulatory takings law, there appears to be an almost universal assumption that its vagueness is a bad thing, a mysterious dysfunction. This article argues that the vagueness in takings doctrine is quite functional and entirely appropriate. Since considerable vagueness turns out to be inevitable, this is just as well. Happily, over time, specific resource use conflicts and transitions sometimes do crystallize out into more predictable forms of law - new rules and customs about specific types of property. Within these specific and limited regimes, we can and should aspire to rules defining the circumstances under which the …

Medicaid And The Unconstitutional Dimensions Of Prior Authorization, Jagan Nicholas Ranjan
Medicaid And The Unconstitutional Dimensions Of Prior Authorization, Jagan Nicholas Ranjan
Michigan Law Review
The political outcry over prescription drug costs has been one of the most vociferous in recent memory. From tales depicting renegade seniors sneaking cheap prescriptions of Vioxx out of Tijuana across the border, to the promises of reduced prices made by front-runners during the 2000 Presidential election, the calls for lower drug prices have been forceful and demanding. This war for lower-priced pharmaceuticals fought by consumers, interest groups and politicians against the pharmaceutical industry itself has recently developed yet another front. The latest battle is over Medicaid. The new victims are the poor. Presently, federal statutory provisions in the Medicaid …

Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Catherine Beavis, Judith Kalman, Macrina Gómez, Gert Rijlaarsdam, Anne D'Antonio Stinson, Melissa E. Whiting
Faculty Publications
Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June 2002 for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …

Belonging In Parent-School Partnerships: Perspectives Of Parents Of Middle School Students With Autism, Michael Wayne Riley
Belonging In Parent-School Partnerships: Perspectives Of Parents Of Middle School Students With Autism, Michael Wayne Riley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to contribute to understandings of parent-school relationships involving parents of students with autism by exploring notions of belonging with a small group of parents. The purpose of the study is to describe the experiences of middle school parents of children with autism. From these descriptions, I examined how parents of students with autism might contribute to understandings of belonging in school-family partnerships and enable schools and families to collaborate more effectively. This study addresses an apparent gap in understandings of belonging of parents of children with autism in their relationships with their child's school. …

Learning To Produce Speech With An Altered Vocal Tract: The Role Of Auditory Feedback, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall
Learning To Produce Speech With An Altered Vocal Tract: The Role Of Auditory Feedback, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall
Psychology Faculty Publications
Modifying the vocal tract alters a speaker’s previously learned acoustic–articulatory relationship. This study investigated the contribution of auditory feedback to the process of adapting to vocal-tract modifications. Subjects said the word /tɑs/ while wearing a dental prosthesis that extended the length of their maxillary incisor teeth. The prosthesis affected /s/ productions and the subjects were asked to learn to produce ‘‘normal’’ /s/’s. They alternately received normal auditory feedback and noise that masked their natural feedback during productions. Acoustic analysis of the speakers’ /s/ productions showed that the distribution of energy across the spectra moved toward that of normal, unperturbed production …

“Birdstrike” – What’S The Word? (Poster), Carla Dove
“Birdstrike” – What’S The Word? (Poster), Carla Dove
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 4th (2002)
The word(s) “bird strike”, “bird-strike”, or “birdstrike” has been used inconsistently throughout the literature for as long as birds have been colliding with aircraft. A recent search of peer-reviewed articles in the Zoological Record and Biological Abstracts dating back to 1969 resulted in 52 articles that pertained to bird-aircraft collisions. Of those, 67% used two words (bird strike); 22% used a hyphenated word (bird-strike); 5.5% used one word (birdstrike), and 5.5% actually used both two words and the hyphenated version in the same paper! A brief glance through the proceedings and abstracts of recent Bird Strike Committee Meetings also exemplifies …

Senior School Board Officials' Perceptions Of A National Achievement Assessment Program, Marielle Simon, Renée Forgette-Giroux
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP) has been collecting data across Canada on 13- and 16-year-old student achievement in mathematics, in science, and in reading and writing since 1993. In 1999, it completed its second assessment cycle and was reviewed in Spring 2000. The review design included a survey of officials from all the school boards/districts that participated in the science assessment program held in 1999. ...
