Mora Alignment And Multiple Foot Types In K’Ichee’, Rusty Barrett Jan 2002

Mora Alignment And Multiple Foot Types In K’Ichee’, Rusty Barrett

Linguistics Presentations

This paper presents an analysis of the stress system in the Nahualá dialect of K’ichee’ (a Mayan language spoken in Western Guatemala) and discusses the theoretical implications of K’ichee’ stress. In K’ichee’, quantity sensitivity is dependent on position within a word rather than syllable structure. The analysis of K’ichee’ suggests the need for a uniform analysis of foot structure within OT so that stress is always dependent on foot structure rather than syllable structure (with the effects of quantity sensitivity resulting from the equation of a foot with a single syllable). The proposed analysis is applied to the case of …

Clinical Assessment, James Wood, Howard Garb, Scott Lilienfeld Jan 2002

Clinical Assessment, James Wood, Howard Garb, Scott Lilienfeld

Departmental Papers (Psych)

Are clinical psychologists' assessment practices cost-effective? Are they scientifically sound? Are they fair and unbiased? Financial presssures from managed care interests, recent developments in the law, and multicultural issues are forcing the profession to confront these hard questions regarding accountability. Our review discusses the important changes that have begun to alter the field of personality assessment and describes recent research on clinical judgment and its implications for the future. We conclude that clinical psychology can adapt to future conditions by developing assessment strategies that are economical, scientifically sound, and culturally sensitive.

Extending Direct Manipulation In A Text Editor, David G. Novick, Francisco Romero, Edgar Rene Saenz, Armando Sandoval Jan 2002

Extending Direct Manipulation In A Text Editor, David G. Novick, Francisco Romero, Edgar Rene Saenz, Armando Sandoval

Departmental Papers (CS)

This paper describes the implementation of a prototype text editor that incorporates conversation-like features through the direct-manipulation modality. In this way, traditional direct-manipulation interaction techniques such as direct reference via pointing can be extended to include techniques more commonly associated with human conversation, such as negotiation of reference. The paper illustrates the use of the prototype with an extended example, and discusses research issues raised by the implementation.

Reanalysis Of Passive And Negative Prefixes In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 2002

Reanalysis Of Passive And Negative Prefixes In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett

Linguistic Discovery

Two productive Seri prefixes, negative and passive, are in a limited number of cases reanalyzed as part of the verb stem. This reanalysis has produced homophonous verb forms: one group is clearly analytical (affix + root) and one group is clearly synthetic. The evidence that reanalysis has taken place is presented. These new verb roots enter into new morphological constructions. And since the original analytical verb forms continue to exist, the result is the coexistence of homophonous and sometimes virtually synonymous words (such as the original transitive verb and a new causative verb that is based on a reanalyzed passive).

On Some Control Structures In Hellenistic Greek: A Comparison With Classical And Modern Greek, Brian D. Joseph Jan 2002

On Some Control Structures In Hellenistic Greek: A Comparison With Classical And Modern Greek, Brian D. Joseph

Linguistic Discovery

Control Structures in Ancient Greek typically involved infinitival complementation while in Modern Greek, finite complementation is the rule. Hellenistic Greek provides an interesting "way-station" between these two types of complementation, inasmuch as it is both chronologically and structurally transitional. In this contribution to the historical syntax of Greek, an analysis is offered of control structures in Hellenistic Greek, tracing the transition from the Ancient Greek type to the Modern Greek type. Based on the evidence of these three stages of Greek and the developments that the language shows with regard to innovations in the form and properties of control structures, …

Notes On Agreement In Itelmen, Jonathan David Bobaljik, Susi Wurmbrand Jan 2002

Notes On Agreement In Itelmen, Jonathan David Bobaljik, Susi Wurmbrand

Linguistic Discovery

Agreement in Itelmen is represented by means of both prefixes and suffixes. While the prefixes reference subjects (of both transitive and intransitive verbs), the suffixal agreement morphemes on a given verb may reference the subject, the object, or an oblique argument, or some combination of these. We propose that the proper characterization of the factors that determine which arguments control suffixal agreement involves a division of labour between morphology and a notion of discourse prominence/salience. In essence, we propose that the suffixal agreement morpheme is an object agreement marker, but the features of the subject are reflected in this position …

Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2002

Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This Article integrates constitutional principles, statutory requirements, and federal policy governing the use and preservation of cultural resources to sketch out a decision-making framework for public land managers. Specific examples of cases where American Indian interests have been pitted against competing demands at Devils Tower National Monument, the Indian Pass area of the California Desert, and the Medicine Wheel are examined to illustrate optimal solutionssolutions allowing the greatest possible accommodation of cultural, even spiritual, interests, while protecting the resources from degradation. The conflicts at these sites, and the opportunities presented by these conflicts, show that federal agencies can adopt reasonable …

Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton Jan 2002

Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1995, the Office for Civil Rights conducted a compliance review of the Bayou Parish School System (a pseudonym) in Louisiana. The review revealed a statistically significant underrepresentation of African-American students in the Bayou Parish gifted program. This case study examined how African-American representation in a gifted program may be increased through the use of research-based interventions implemented by the Office for Civil Rights.

The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze data. Documents from the Office for Civil Rights and the Louisiana Department of Education were examined to: (a) show patterns of African-American and nonminority …
