E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley
E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
September 11 forged an American unity not seen since Pearl Harbor. We shelved our political differences, put the culture war on simmer, and lost interest in celebrity scandal (think of Gary Condit). Americans rallied behind our Commander-in-Chief, and we agreed that our lives would never be the same. America’s vacation from history had ended, and we had forever lost our innocence and our perceived immunity from harm. When our Commander-in-Chief said that a return to “normalcy” would deny Bin Laden his victory, we rallied behind that, too.
Evidence Of Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Evidence Of Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Journal Articles
In the hours after the 11 September attacks on the United States, some called for counterattacks on America's enemies, regardless of any evidence of wrong-doing. Those calls were rejected and some evidence was produced linking Osama bin Laden, his organization, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban regime of Afghanistan to the attacks. The United States and United Kingdom began a bombing campaign of Afghanistan on the strength of that evidence on 7 October 2001. This article explores the law of evidence in international law. It seeks to identify what evidence is sufficient for supporting a case of self-defence to clandestine terror attacks.
Suspending The Pardon Power During The Twilight Of A Presidential Term, Gregory C. Sisk
Suspending The Pardon Power During The Twilight Of A Presidential Term, Gregory C. Sisk
Missouri Law Review
In January 2001, the singular executive power to grant official absolution was back in the public spotlight and on the scholarly roundtable with President Bill Clinton's last-minute pardons of or commutations granted to nearly two hundred people, several of which are difficult or impossible to justify.
Symbiosis And Exchange In Multicultural Spaces: A Study Of Nadine Gordimer And Joy Harjo, Angelique V. Nixon
Symbiosis And Exchange In Multicultural Spaces: A Study Of Nadine Gordimer And Joy Harjo, Angelique V. Nixon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Multicultural literature opens up unique "worlds" that allow readers to experience multicultural spaces; these works are not only representations of real-world conditions, as many critics posit, but also "possible worlds" artfully constructed that transport readers to unfamiliar places. This thesis presents an analysis of the unique symbiosis and exchange that occurs between reader and author in multicultural literature through the use of possible-worlds theory. This study shows how such texts support a complex relationship between the real and the fictional through a process I deem "multicultural symbiosis." Two strategically chosen texts are considered, each representing a different socio-political-cultural context as …
Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein
Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The cultural construction of the past and the role it plays in the present have contributed to our understanding of our history and our culture. Expression and definition of cultural identity are important factors in this discussion and can depend on who is in control of the image and what drives their interest. In order to examine these issues, I explore the roles of authority, voice, and empowerment. I look at cultural representation as portrayed by the African American community of Delray Beach Florida through an oral history project and self-representation through exhibits and public performances. I have documented the …
Technologies Of Language And Money: A Study Of Stock Manipulation And Internet Communication, Annette D. Beresford
Technologies Of Language And Money: A Study Of Stock Manipulation And Internet Communication, Annette D. Beresford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Internet technologies provide a criminal opportunity for stock manipulation and fraud that costs investors millions of dollars every day. In order to reduce this loss and craft policies and procedures to deter future losses, securities regulators have been seeking to understand the process of Internet securities fraud, including the actions of investors and fraudsters that contribute to that process. The purpose of this study is to determine the properties of the Internet communication environment associated with fraudulent stock schemes in order to contribute to these efforts of securities regulators. In addition, an aim of this study is to introduce Foucault's …

Voy A Luchar Por Mi Misma! "I Will Fight For Myself!": Extraordinary Acts And Ordinary Womanhood. The Political Leadership Of A Rural, Mayan Woman, Dulce M. Gutierrez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Early studies concerning the participation of women in social movements have been shown to lack portrayals of women as agents of change. This thesis examines a political anthropology of action or agency within the context of gender, including a discussion on the characterization of women in Mexican politics, to analyze the structures of opportunity that have allowed Soledad Torrez Chay, a rural Mayan woman, access to resources, power, and leadership. Aspects of Soledad's life history illustrate her understanding of the economy, politics, and history of Mexico. This research fills gaps in previous analyses that have focused on women as victims …
Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller
Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The history of automobile insurance in Florida provides a case study of economic adaptation to the negative consequences of rapid technological change. The emergence of the automobile in early twentieth century Florida brought with it widespread bodily injury and property damage. The insurance industry and the state government interacted for several decades in trying to fashion a way of reducing the economic cost of automobile accidents. Florida resisted a comprehensive application of insurance to the problem until 1971, when it passed the Florida Automobile Reparations Reform Act. Had Florida acted sooner, the economic impact of automobile accidents could have been …
Functional Genomics Of A Novel Colon Carcinoma-Related Gene (Ccrg), Hema D. Damania
Functional Genomics Of A Novel Colon Carcinoma-Related Gene (Ccrg), Hema D. Damania
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Recently Dr. Narayanan's laboratory, utilizing bioinformatics approaches, identified a novel gene which may play a role in colon cancer. This gene in view of its expression specificity was termed Colon Carcinoma Related Gene (CCRG). The CCRG belongs to a novel class of secreted molecules with a unique cysteine rich motif. The function of CCRG however, remains unknown. The basis of this project revolved around establishing the putative function (functional genomics) of CCRG. The rationale for the project was to test a hypothesis that CCRG may offer a growth advantage to cancer cells. The availability of diverse tumor-derived cell lines, which …
How Leatherback Hatchlings Recognize Their Prey: Sensory Predispositions And Behavioral Responses, Maricela Alcantara Constantino
How Leatherback Hatchlings Recognize Their Prey: Sensory Predispositions And Behavioral Responses, Maricela Alcantara Constantino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) feed exclusively on gelatinous prey. Hatchlings are solitary and must possess a predisposition to respond to prey. In laboratory experiments, I studied the responses of nineteen leatherback hatchlings to visual (jellyfish model and shapes: circle, square, diamond) and chemical (homogenates of three prey) stimuli presented alone or as paired (visual + chemical) treatments once daily. When presented alone visual stimuli resembling jellyfish outlines elicited stronger feeding responses (changes in locomotion and orientation) than those not resembling jellyfish. Chemical stimuli alone induced a rheotaxis, but responses evoked by some homogenates were stronger than responses to others. …
G. K. Chesterton's "The Man Who Was Thursday": Merging Detective Fiction With The Fantastic, Steven L. Knapp
G. K. Chesterton's "The Man Who Was Thursday": Merging Detective Fiction With The Fantastic, Steven L. Knapp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
G. K. Chesterton is known for writing detective fiction, his Father Brown crime stories being his most popular works. Chesterton, however, wrote more than a hundred books. The Man Who Was Thursday is Chesterton's fictional masterpiece. The novel reveals the author as a creative genius, at least equal to now-better-known writers of his time, such as Conrad and Kafka. Chesterton tells detective Gabriel Syme's tale in the novel, which also exudes an autobiographical flavor, giving fragments of Chesterton's own story of his escape from fin-de-siecle pessimism. As literary art, the novel merges the detective genre with the genre of the …
Influences Of An Experiential Learning Program For Holocaust Education, Carol Luann Clyde
Influences Of An Experiential Learning Program For Holocaust Education, Carol Luann Clyde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the influence of an experiential learning program for Holocaust education. The March of Remembrance and Hope (MORH) program was established as a means to raise awareness and understanding of the event and to encourage students' involvement in related programs. The study explores what influence (if any) the MORH program had on the areas of student world-view, academic interests, and leadership skills. Additionally, the research will determine if reflection on the program influenced student participants, and if there are common demographics among those most influenced by the program. Finally, the research evaluated whether …
Imagination At Work: Improving Adult Literacy With The "Harry Potter" Novels, Jo Ann Bamdas
Imagination At Work: Improving Adult Literacy With The "Harry Potter" Novels, Jo Ann Bamdas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Global illiteracy remains rampant partly due to confusing definitions, inadequate data gathering, hidden agendas, and improper tools of stimulation. Adult literacy is a problem despite efforts and resources. Using children's and adolescents' literature can improve literacy but it is not being used enough due to false concepts. The problems and an adult non-reader profile are outlined. Current literature on literacy, children's literature theory, and critical plus public intellectual media in academia and popular culture is reviewed. I borrow Martha Nussbaum's idea of the narrative imagination to explore J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels. I analyze and then provide a program …
Impact Of Racial Diversity On State Welfare Policies, Lindsay Ona Walker
Impact Of Racial Diversity On State Welfare Policies, Lindsay Ona Walker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act devolved much of the authority for welfare policymaking to the state governments. The goal was to promote variation in welfare policies in order to find the most effective way to keep low-income families in the work force and deter teenage pregnancy and family breakup. Without federal entitlement and federal oversight, black populations may be subject to more restrictive policies and may become the victims of welfare racism. This study examines variation in the generosity of state welfare policies and assesses the role of racism in welfare policy outcomes. This is done …
Kona Field System: An Interdisciplinary Investigation Of The Human-Environmental Interactions That Caused The Death Of Captain James Cook, Melissa Crimi Carney
Kona Field System: An Interdisciplinary Investigation Of The Human-Environmental Interactions That Caused The Death Of Captain James Cook, Melissa Crimi Carney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
By comparing research from several disciplines and subfields such as history, anthropology, and environmental archaeology, an alternative theory for the cause of Captain James Cook's death on February 14, 1779 developed. One of the basic needs of human beings is food. In 1779, food played an integral part in Hawaiian culture. The population in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii was at maximum potential and was supported by a large-scale agricultural system known as the Kona Field System. There were 284 men on Captain Cook's third expedition and they relied on the Hawaiians for their food provisions. The economic production of the Kona …
Leesburg, Florida During World War Ii: Portrait Of An American Home Front, Robin C. Tinsley
Leesburg, Florida During World War Ii: Portrait Of An American Home Front, Robin C. Tinsley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
World War II has been considered a "golden age" for Americans, years during which civilians cooperated in defense programs and faced shortages with cheerful self-sacrifice. The wartime experiences of individual communities such as Leesburg, Florida, provide pieces of the national mosaic and offer insight into small town perspectives of home front duty and obligation. Leesburg's residents faced the same adjustments as other Americans, and their immersion in wartime activities cultivated characteristic home front patriotism. Though the town's population nearly doubled when unprecedented military expansion brought thousands of personnel into the area, and hundreds of German POWs arrived to ease the …
Probiotics In Aquaculture: An Analysis Of The Bacteria Associated With The Gut Of Healthy Shrimps, Penaeus Spp, Koske Yamazaki
Probiotics In Aquaculture: An Analysis Of The Bacteria Associated With The Gut Of Healthy Shrimps, Penaeus Spp, Koske Yamazaki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A recent surge in the consumption of shrimps has compelled the aquaculture industry to expand greatly. Bacteriosis poses a major challenge to shrimp cultivation. Probiotic control of disease in larvicultures has been on the rise for the past decade; however, there has been little research to provide required frameworks for this promising technology. In this study, the normal gut flora of the commercially important shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, and its relative, P. duorarum was extensively analyzed to provide a basis for selection of putative probiotic strains. Heterotorphic members of the gut and ambient water were isolated and characterized by culture techniques, …

International Environmental Law And Emotional Rational Choice, Peter H. Huang
International Environmental Law And Emotional Rational Choice, Peter H. Huang
Publications
This paper considers how emotions can foster compliance by rational actors with international environmental law. Many environmental issues are highly emotionally charged. Both supporters of and opponents to international environmental law often feel very strongly about their positions and views. A psychological game-theoretic model focuses on the disciplinary role that losing face may play in compliance with international environmental law. This model implies that non-compliance, especially by high-profile international actors, should be highly and swiftly publicized upon detection and verification. The model also explains why actors care so much about soft, that is, non-binding international environmental law, such as international …

Stakeholder Protection In Germany And Japan, Mark J. Loewenstein
Stakeholder Protection In Germany And Japan, Mark J. Loewenstein
Publications
This Essay considers the stakeholder debate in the context of the German and Japanese legal systems. Although, nominally, corporations in those countries must operate in the interests of shareholders, in fact nonshareholder constituencies have considerable influence on corporate decision makers. Of equal importance, weak securities markets and ineffective or nonexistent legal protections for shareholders are also important factors in strengthening the position of nonshareholder constituencies and freeing directors to consider their interests. Thus, the stakeholder debate is more of an issue in the United States and Britain, where more shareholder-centic models flourish.
Rhetorical Construction Of The Female Politician In Newspapers: How National Newspapers Portrayed Katherine Harris And Hillary Clinton During Controversial Times, Anne Marie Conklin
Rhetorical Construction Of The Female Politician In Newspapers: How National Newspapers Portrayed Katherine Harris And Hillary Clinton During Controversial Times, Anne Marie Conklin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This essay examines rhetoric regarding Katherine Harris and Hillary Clinton published in three national newspapers during a critical point in each woman's political career. By using the methods of content analysis and feminist rhetorical critique, it was found that national newspapers construct an image of political women as power-hungry "bitches" with poor taste in fashion who are accustomed to getting what they want and will stop at nothing to do so. Thus, it appears that patriarchal biases continue to shape the foundation of political reporters. Given that most Americans gather their knowledge of politics through the media, this thesis argues …

Spanish Accented English: Pronunciation Accuracy And Factors Affecting L2 Acquisition, Antonella. Donadio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examines the English pronunciation of 20 native speakers of Spanish of the Americas who have been living in the United States for a period ranging from 1 to 37 years. The 20 participants were divided into three groups according to their age of arrival and length of residence in the United States. The subjects recorded 22 sentences which contained notorious interference features such as the lax vowels /I, U, ∧, ae/, the distinctions between /c-s/, /s-z/, /theta-t/ and between /b d g/ versus Spanish [beta th gamma]. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors of …
"White Male Backlash" To Diversity Training: Rhetorical Criticism Using Fantasy Theme Analysis, Kery. Knutson
"White Male Backlash" To Diversity Training: Rhetorical Criticism Using Fantasy Theme Analysis, Kery. Knutson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study investigates the diversity training industry that developed throughout the 1990's and continues to develop. Specifically, this analysis examines the resistance to diversity training that comes from the cultural group of white males. It seems that the way in which diversity training is communicated might cause part of this resistance. The present study seeks to determine why a "white male backlash" exists and what reasons are given to account for the resistance. Thus, a rhetorical criticism using fantasy theme analysis is used. The essays/articles that are examined are mainly from news publications and trade journals but also include white …

Acute Toxicity Of The Agricultural Chemicals Endosulfan And Copper Sulfate To A Freshwater Shrimp, Palaemonetes Paludosus, Prajakta Netaji Kamthe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The toxicity of endosulfan, a restricted use pesticida, and copper sulfate, an anti-algal agent, ranks among the highest in all insecticidas. Both chemicals, used in agricultura fields of southern Florida, are known to be highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates. Since Palaemonetes pugio, an extensively studied brackish water shrimp species, has proven to be excellent for toxicological analysis, a closely related freshwater shrimp species, Palaemonetes paludosus, was used as the test species in this study to determine the toxicity of endosulfan and copper sulfate in freshwater. A series of static renewal 96 h bioassays (renewed every 24 h) performed on juvenile …
