Scale-Invariant Behavior In A Spatial Game Of Prisoners’ Dilemma, Yun Fong Lim, Kan Chen, Ciriyam Jayaprakash Jan 2002

Scale-Invariant Behavior In A Spatial Game Of Prisoners’ Dilemma, Yun Fong Lim, Kan Chen, Ciriyam Jayaprakash

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A spatially extended version of the game of prisoner’s dilemma, originally proposed by Nowak and May, is modified to include stochastic updating and found to exhibit scale-invariant behavior. Two critical regimes with different scaling behaviors are found; the corresponding exponents have been determined numerically. Spatially, the critical states are characterized by the existence of delicately balanced networks of defectors separating domains of cooperators; temporally, the evolution of the critical states following local perturbations is characterized by avalanches of various magnitudes, which cause restructuring of the networks of defectors on all scales.

Opportunities For Obtaining And Using Litigation Reserves And Disclosures, Matthew J. Barrett Jan 2002

Opportunities For Obtaining And Using Litigation Reserves And Disclosures, Matthew J. Barrett

Journal Articles

In late 1975, the accounting and legal professions reached an accord that led to three new professional standards: (1) a new financial accounting rule for contingencies, (2) an auditing standard addressing the requirement that an auditor obtain evidence about an audit client's contingent liabilities to determine whether the client has properly treated those items in its financial statements, and (3) the American Bar Association's Statement of Policy Regarding Lawyers' Responses to Auditors' Requests for Information under that auditing standard. The Commentary that accompanied the Statement of Policy explicitly stated that the organized bar's expectation that communications between lawyers and auditors …

Data on presentation, investigations, monitoring and therapy was obtained. Chi-square and t tests were used to analyze the data. Results: Out of 344 patients with AMI, 71% …

"Money Can't Buy Me Love": A Contrast Between Damages In Family Law And Contract, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2002

"Money Can't Buy Me Love": A Contrast Between Damages In Family Law And Contract, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

As my contribution to this symposium in David's honor, I submit the law and economics section of the damages chapter of our joint enterprise, Understanding Contracts. Because of David's failing health, my own involvement with the publisher never reached contract stage. The chapter concludes with a problem that illustrates some of the intricacies of mixing family law and contract. David and I grappled for some time with the answer to the problem, coming at it from our different points of view. On one occasion, David, with a twinkle, told me there was only one place where I was "absolutely wrong." …

The Enduring Illegitimacy Of The Poison Pill, Julian Velasco Jan 2002

The Enduring Illegitimacy Of The Poison Pill, Julian Velasco

Journal Articles

The poison pill is the ultimate defense against a hostile takeover. From management's perspective, it is almost too good to be true. Originally, the poison pill was seen as a way to guard against the worst of hostile takeover tactics. It has been successful; the poison pill has virtually eliminated these tactics from the repertoires of hostile bidders. However, the poison pill is extremely potent, capable of preventing all hostile takeovers, regardless of their underlying merit. Thus, the poison pill eventually became the means to employ a just say no defense of resisting hostile takeovers, regardless of the interests of …

American Exceptionalism And The International Law Of Self-Defense, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2002

American Exceptionalism And The International Law Of Self-Defense, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Following the September 11th attacks in the United States (U.S.), one could make a case for America's use of force in Afghanistan as a lawful exercise of the right of self-defense. But the proposals to invade Iraq following September 11th cannot be so defended. Those proposals did not concern defending the basic security of the U.S. in the sense that basic security defense is currently understood in the international community. They concerned, rather, defense of a more expansive concept of security, a concept wherein the U.S. need not tolerate antagonistic regimes with the potential to harm U.S. interests. The invasion …

Promises, Trust, And Contract Law, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Jan 2002

Promises, Trust, And Contract Law, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

Journal Articles

The need for individuals to be able to trust that promises will be performed is central to justifying a law that renders certain promises enforceable. This Article argues that the legal enforcement of certain promises to meet this need does not necessarily diminish the personal relationships of trust in which such promises are made, as has been argued. Rather, this Article argues, the making and performance of legally enforceable promises can assist individuals in building relationships of trust, as it assists them in the pursuit of myriad goods.

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2002

E Pluribus Unum: The Aftermath Of September 11, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

September 11 forged an American unity not seen since Pearl Harbor. We shelved our political differences, put the culture war on simmer, and lost interest in celebrity scandal (think of Gary Condit). Americans rallied behind our Commander-in-Chief, and we agreed that our lives would never be the same. America’s vacation from history had ended, and we had forever lost our innocence and our perceived immunity from harm. When our Commander-in-Chief said that a return to “normalcy” would deny Bin Laden his victory, we rallied behind that, too.

Evidence Of Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2002

Evidence Of Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

In the hours after the 11 September attacks on the United States, some called for counterattacks on America's enemies, regardless of any evidence of wrong-doing. Those calls were rejected and some evidence was produced linking Osama bin Laden, his organization, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban regime of Afghanistan to the attacks. The United States and United Kingdom began a bombing campaign of Afghanistan on the strength of that evidence on 7 October 2001. This article explores the law of evidence in international law. It seeks to identify what evidence is sufficient for supporting a case of self-defence to clandestine terror attacks.

Suspending The Pardon Power During The Twilight Of A Presidential Term, Gregory C. Sisk

Missouri Law Review

In January 2001, the singular executive power to grant official absolution was back in the public spotlight and on the scholarly roundtable with President Bill Clinton's last-minute pardons of or commutations granted to nearly two hundred people, several of which are difficult or impossible to justify.

Symbiosis And Exchange In Multicultural Spaces: A Study Of Nadine Gordimer And Joy Harjo, Angelique V. Nixon Jan 2002

Symbiosis And Exchange In Multicultural Spaces: A Study Of Nadine Gordimer And Joy Harjo, Angelique V. Nixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Multicultural literature opens up unique "worlds" that allow readers to experience multicultural spaces; these works are not only representations of real-world conditions, as many critics posit, but also "possible worlds" artfully constructed that transport readers to unfamiliar places. This thesis presents an analysis of the unique symbiosis and exchange that occurs between reader and author in multicultural literature through the use of possible-worlds theory. This study shows how such texts support a complex relationship between the real and the fictional through a process I deem "multicultural symbiosis." Two strategically chosen texts are considered, each representing a different socio-political-cultural context as …

Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein Jan 2002

Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The cultural construction of the past and the role it plays in the present have contributed to our understanding of our history and our culture. Expression and definition of cultural identity are important factors in this discussion and can depend on who is in control of the image and what drives their interest. In order to examine these issues, I explore the roles of authority, voice, and empowerment. I look at cultural representation as portrayed by the African American community of Delray Beach Florida through an oral history project and self-representation through exhibits and public performances. I have documented the …

Technologies Of Language And Money: A Study Of Stock Manipulation And Internet Communication, Annette D. Beresford Jan 2002

Technologies Of Language And Money: A Study Of Stock Manipulation And Internet Communication, Annette D. Beresford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Internet technologies provide a criminal opportunity for stock manipulation and fraud that costs investors millions of dollars every day. In order to reduce this loss and craft policies and procedures to deter future losses, securities regulators have been seeking to understand the process of Internet securities fraud, including the actions of investors and fraudsters that contribute to that process. The purpose of this study is to determine the properties of the Internet communication environment associated with fraudulent stock schemes in order to contribute to these efforts of securities regulators. In addition, an aim of this study is to introduce Foucault's …

Voy A Luchar Por Mi Misma! "I Will Fight For Myself!": Extraordinary Acts And Ordinary Womanhood. The Political Leadership Of A Rural, Mayan Woman, Dulce M. Gutierrez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Early studies concerning the participation of women in social movements have been shown to lack portrayals of women as agents of change. This thesis examines a political anthropology of action or agency within the context of gender, including a discussion on the characterization of women in Mexican politics, to analyze the structures of opportunity that have allowed Soledad Torrez Chay, a rural Mayan woman, access to resources, power, and leadership. Aspects of Soledad's life history illustrate her understanding of the economy, politics, and history of Mexico. This research fills gaps in previous analyses that have focused on women as victims …

Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller Jan 2002

Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The history of automobile insurance in Florida provides a case study of economic adaptation to the negative consequences of rapid technological change. The emergence of the automobile in early twentieth century Florida brought with it widespread bodily injury and property damage. The insurance industry and the state government interacted for several decades in trying to fashion a way of reducing the economic cost of automobile accidents. Florida resisted a comprehensive application of insurance to the problem until 1971, when it passed the Florida Automobile Reparations Reform Act. Had Florida acted sooner, the economic impact of automobile accidents could have been …

Functional Genomics Of A Novel Colon Carcinoma-Related Gene (Ccrg), Hema D. Damania Jan 2002

Functional Genomics Of A Novel Colon Carcinoma-Related Gene (Ccrg), Hema D. Damania

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recently Dr. Narayanan's laboratory, utilizing bioinformatics approaches, identified a novel gene which may play a role in colon cancer. This gene in view of its expression specificity was termed Colon Carcinoma Related Gene (CCRG). The CCRG belongs to a novel class of secreted molecules with a unique cysteine rich motif. The function of CCRG however, remains unknown. The basis of this project revolved around establishing the putative function (functional genomics) of CCRG. The rationale for the project was to test a hypothesis that CCRG may offer a growth advantage to cancer cells. The availability of diverse tumor-derived cell lines, which …

How Leatherback Hatchlings Recognize Their Prey: Sensory Predispositions And Behavioral Responses, Maricela Alcantara Constantino Jan 2002

How Leatherback Hatchlings Recognize Their Prey: Sensory Predispositions And Behavioral Responses, Maricela Alcantara Constantino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) feed exclusively on gelatinous prey. Hatchlings are solitary and must possess a predisposition to respond to prey. In laboratory experiments, I studied the responses of nineteen leatherback hatchlings to visual (jellyfish model and shapes: circle, square, diamond) and chemical (homogenates of three prey) stimuli presented alone or as paired (visual + chemical) treatments once daily. When presented alone visual stimuli resembling jellyfish outlines elicited stronger feeding responses (changes in locomotion and orientation) than those not resembling jellyfish. Chemical stimuli alone induced a rheotaxis, but responses evoked by some homogenates were stronger than responses to others. …
