Urinary Excretion Of Dithiocarbamates And Selfreported Cruciferous Vegetable Intake: Application Of The ‘Method Of Triads’ To A Foodspecific Biomarker, Jay H. Fowke, James R. Hébert, Jed W. Fahey

Faculty Publications

Objective: Greater intake of Cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli) may prevent cancer at several sites. Urinary excretion of isothiocyanate conjugates (dithiocarbamates, DTC) provides a specific biomarker of Cruciferous vegetable consumption suitable for epidemiological investigations. However, no gold-standard referent is available for evaluating urinary DTC levels as an estimator of Cruciferous vegetable consumption. We compared urinary DTC levels to intake as measured by two selfreported dietary assessment techniques. Design: Cruciferous vegetable consumption was measured before and after a behavioural dietary intervention using multiple 24-hour recalls (24HR), a foodcounting questionnaire (VFQ) and urinary DTC excretion levels. Analysis included a structural equation approach (Method …

Using Research Methods To Evaluate Your Extension Program, Keith G. Diem Dec 2002

Using Research Methods To Evaluate Your Extension Program, Keith G. Diem

Journal of Extension

For Extension practitioners, research is typically considered an ominous practice reserved for ivory tower academics, and evaluation is nearly as mysterious. Therefore, Extension agents often shy away from using scientific methods to evaluate educational programs. However, research is simply a methodical way of finding answers to questions used to discover new information or prove scientific theories. And research methods can also be useful to effectively evaluate an educational program or its participants in the most objective way. This article presents an overview of research methods that Extension agents can use in program evaluation. It includes a bibliography of helpful resources.

Why People Are Moving To Suburbia (And Beyond): Examining The Pull Factor In The Fox Valley, Michael Koles, David Muench

Journal of Extension

Communities across the United States are growing and changing at an unprecedented pace. The Fox Valley of Wisconsin is no exception to the rapid population growth and development that often occurs in an unplanned manner and evokes terms like "sprawl" and "leapfrog construction." The rapid suburban, exurban, and rural evolution is fueled not only by broad economic factors but also localized characteristics that push residents from the city and pull residents to suburbia. This article describes research that investigated the pull factors in six suburban Fox Valley, Wisconsin communities and discusses resulting implications for Extension programming.

Beyond Knowledge: Guidelines For Effective Health Promotion Messages, Joye C. Gordon

Journal of Extension

Knowledge does not always result in the adoption of recommended behaviors that can prevent or detect illness. This article synthesizes the research of psychologists, health advocates, and other social scientists to identify the factors other than knowledge that influence decisions regarding healthful behaviors. The article also presents guidelines to help Extension personnel optimize messages and programs designed to encourage preventive health behaviors based on findings concerning (a) perceptions of risks; (b) perceptions of self; (c) environmental conditions, both physical and social; and (d) perceptions of costs and benefits of recommended behavior.

Measuring The Ethical Cognition Effects Of A Videotape Livestock Show Ethics Education Program, Jeff L. Goodwin, Tim H. Murphy, Gary Briers

Journal of Extension

As Extension educators and agriculture education teachers address the sensitive issues of livestock show ethics and quality assurance of the food animals produced and marketed to the public through the youth livestock program, they must ensure that their educational efforts are effective. Everyone has an opinion about what should or should not be done in order to improve the situation related youth livestock ethics. This study examines the effectiveness of a video educational program that has been in widespread use since its inception in 1996.

Using Agriculture As The Foundation For An Extension Nutrition Education Program, Luanne J. Hughes Dec 2002

Using Agriculture As The Foundation For An Extension Nutrition Education Program, Luanne J. Hughes

Journal of Extension

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is based on the principle that the future success of our farms is dependent upon the relationships between farmers and an expanding non-agricultural population. And, in many ways, the future success of our communities can be cultivated by strengthening our connection with our agricultural roots. Building on this concept, Rutgers Cooperative Extension created a nutrition and agriculture education initiative for children ages 3 to 8 called "From Our Farms." From Our Farms promotes improved nutrition and consumption of locally grown foods through a series of family-based activities that are offered through local libraries.

The authors review previous work about recipe development for limited resource audiences and present a comprehensive recipe checklist for Extension staff to better assess whether a recipe will be effective in programming.

A Measurement Of Job Satisfaction Indicators Of North Dakota Long Term Health Care Givers, Deborah Moreno Dec 2002

A Measurement Of Job Satisfaction Indicators Of North Dakota Long Term Health Care Givers, Deborah Moreno

Theses and Dissertations

Long term care facilities in North Dakota and across the nation are experiencing a shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs). This shortage is significant as it directly affects the quality of care provided to long term care residents. As long term care is labor intensive, recruitment and retention efforts are critical to these facilities. In a highly competitive labor market, although recruitment is important, retention of current employees is crucial. An integration retention strategy is necessary for the retention of employees. Numerous studies have suggested that job satisfaction is directly related to …

The Relationship Of Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nurses, Rosanne Schmidt Dec 2002

The Relationship Of Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nurses, Rosanne Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this study is to determine if there is a link between nurse job satisfaction and patient satisfaction with nurses. It is important in health care that nurses employed in a facility are satisfied with their jobs and that patients are satisfied with the care they receive while they are a patient in the hospital. The satisfaction of both nurses and the patients served in hospitals ultimately affects the bottom line of that hospital. The outcome of this study indicates there is evidence that a relationship exists between some aspects of nurse job satisfaction and some types of …

Cleveland State University: An Economic Impact Study, Ziona Austrian

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The economic value of an urban university to a metropolitan region is comprised of (1) the educational opportunities provided to students who rely on local institutions of higher education, (2) the unique contributions of urban universities to the social and political infrastructure of a region, and (3) the research and service contracts and other funds and philanthropic donations attracted to the campus by faculty and staff. If an urban university such as Cleveland State University (CSU) did not exist in the Cleveland metropolitan region, many, if not all of these economic and social contributions would be lost. In addition, the …

Pulmonary tuberculosis continues to be a major health problem all over the world. Medical treatment with antibiotics is effective in most cases. However, when medical treatment fails or complications develop, surgery is indicated. Between July 1994 and June 2000, fifty-two patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, thirty-six males and sixteen females, underwent major surgery at Mansoura University Hospitals. Mean age was 35 years (range 22-54). Chronic suppuration and/or haemoptysis were the main symptoms. Eleven patients had positive sputum at the time of surgery. Thirteen patients had pleuro-pneumonectomy or pneumonectomy. Thirty-six had partial lung resection, two had decortication, and one had thoracoplasty. All …
