Current Trends In Hormone Replacement Therapy, Tariq Y. Khashoggi
Current Trends In Hormone Replacement Therapy, Tariq Y. Khashoggi
Saudi Medical Journal
As life span increases, more and more women live longer after the menopause, and see its long-term consequences. The menopause and climacteric have major consequences for the well being of most women, resulting in a variety of symptoms including vasomotor, psychological, sexual symptoms and increased risk of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. Prevention of osteoporosis and reduction in cardiovascular risks are the long-term goals of post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy. Post-menopausal women who receive hormone replacement therapy have approximately half of the rate of coronary artery disease compared to those who do not take it. Similarly, estrogen replacement alone for 5 years results …

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone
Faculty Publications
A common observation in the research literature is that children of drug-dependent parents are at significantly heightened risk of adolescent drug use, abuse, and dependence. Recent research indicates that several psychological and interpersonal factors may affect the association between parents’ psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) and drug use risks among adolescents, yet studies have failed to examine explicitly whether these factors moderate the association between PSUD and adolescent substance abuse. This paper explores these potential relationships using longitudinal data from a study that has followed three cohorts of adolescents and their families over a 7-year period. The cohorts are defined …

Characterization Of Fro1, A Pea Ferric-Chelate Reductase Involved In Root Iron Acquisition, Brian M. Waters, Dale G. Blevins, David J. Eide
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
To acquire iron, many plant species reduce soil Fe(III) to Fe(II) by Fe(III)-chelate reductases embedded in the plasma membrane of root epidermal cells. The reduced product is then taken up by Fe(II) transporter proteins. These activities are induced under Fe deficiency. We describe here the FRO1 gene from pea (Pisum sativum), which encodes an Fe(III)-chelate reductase. Consistent with this proposed role, FRO1 shows similarity to other oxidoreductase proteins, and expression of FRO1 in yeast conferred increased Fe(III)-chelate reductase activity. Furthermore, FRO1 mRNA levels in plants correlated with Fe(III)-chelate reductase activity. Sites of FRO1 …

Accumulation Of Microbial Biomass Within Particulate Organic Matter Of Aging Golf Greens, Mine Kerek, Rhae A. Drijber, William L. Powers, Robert C. Shearman, Roch E. Gaussoin, Anne Streich
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Microbial biomass (MB) is a key variable controlling soil organic matter dynamics in soil. Currently, there is little information on the amount and significance of MB in highly managed golf greens. Our objective was to determine the amount and distribution of MB within soil structural components of golf greens and its relationship to the location of organic substrates. During 1996, 47 greens were sampled from 12 golf courses within Nebraska (USA). Microbial biomass, determined as extractable lipid phosphate on field-moist soils, increased linearly with age of green (Y = 19.39 + 3.54x; r2 = 0.87, P = 0.001). In …

Semiconductors are distinguished among all materials by having a non-vanishing energy band gaps. They are often used in industry in the form of alloys or heterostructures in order to tailor energy gaps suitable for the desired applications. In general, semiconductor materials have broad applications in industry, ranging from micro-electronic devices, to light emitters and detectors, to laser and solar cells. In the last two decades, particular attention has been given to the II-VI semiconductor heterostructures because of their suitability as photoelectronic devices covering from the infra-red to the ultra-violet spectral ranges. The scope of this thesis belongs to the field …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We assessed reproductive patterns of coyotes (Canis latrans) from a 12-year data set involving 24 pairs of captive animals acquired from Latah County, Idaho. None of the females had placental scars (fetal implantation sites) at 1 year of age, but over 80% had placental scars by 2 years of age. The fraction with placental scars remained at 80–90% through age 9 years and then declined to ,40% by age 12 years. Similarly, mean number of placental scars per female rose rapidly through 2–3 years of age, remained stable until age 8 years, and then progressively declined to a …
Incongruent Perceptions And Training Styles: The Paramedic In Conflict With The Emotionally Charged Bystander, Bram Duffee
Incongruent Perceptions And Training Styles: The Paramedic In Conflict With The Emotionally Charged Bystander, Bram Duffee
Theses
Incongruent perceptions can exacerbate conflict situations with emotionally charged patients, family members, and bystanders when the paramedic is providing treatment to a critical patient. This bestows the paramedic with the responsibility of not only working to save the life of the patient, but also working to resolve conflicts that may constrain medical treatment. Therefore, in these situations, paramedics must have the communication skills that allow them to provide quality patient care. This phenomenon is investigated through a native anthropologist perspective by asking paramedics to give their personal accounts of conflicts they have had with emotionally charged stakeholders when treating a …

Ethics In Perioperative Practice—Patient Advocacy, Kathryn Schroeter
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Though often difficult, ethical decision making is necessary when caring for surgical patients. Perioperative nurses have to recognize ethical dilemmas and be prepared to take action based on the ethical code outlined in the American Nurses Association's (ANA's) Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. In this second of a nine‐part series that will help perioperative nurses relate the ANA code to their own area of practice, the author looks at the third provision statement, which addresses nurses' position as patient advocates. Counselors' Perceptions Of Violence And Treatment Recommendations In Response To Gay, Lesbian, And Heterosexual Domestic Violence Scenarios, Patricia J. Pahl
Theses and Dissertations
This study surveyed a national sample of 159 professicmal counseling psychologists regarding their perceptions of violence, perceptions of responsibility for violence, and treatment recommendations in response to reading one of four scenarios of domestic violence. The scenarios were identical, with the exception of the gender of the perpetrator and victim and the sexual orientation of the partners. The results did not support the hypothesis that overall perceptions of violence would differ depending on the scenario read. However, women and men who read scenarios of violence perpetrated by someone of the same gender against a female victim had a stronger perception …
