Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg May 2002

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg

Theses and Dissertations

This paper, Crossing the Gender Barrier - a History of Male Nurses in Manitoba, Canada, will examine the role of men in a female-dominated profession. There is a distinct lack of historical writing on male nurses. Nursing historiography has generally focused on the women who constitute the majority of nurses. Indeed, much of the literature comes from within the nursing profession and the field of sociology, most of which lack an historical emphasis.

The development of the modem healthcare system is important to this work as it illustrates the evolution of the gender constructs that determined that physicians were male …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

It is imperative that researchers pay close attention to the influences of culture on mental health, and acknowledge a cultural context of illness and change when designing prevention programming. Researchers E. V. Cardemil, K. J. Reivich, and M. E. P. Seligman (2002) and D. L. Yu and M. E. P. Seligman (2002) have made attempts at adapting the existing Penn Resiliency Program (PRP) for culturally appropriate use cross-culturally and interculturally. The success of these modifications is discussed within a framework of guidelines designed to remind scientists how much culture counts. Finally, informative resources and a rubric are shared with …

Recent Developments In Wastewater Management In The Coastal Region At The United States-Mexico Border, John H. Minan May 2002

Recent Developments In Wastewater Management In The Coastal Region At The United States-Mexico Border, John H. Minan

San Diego International Law Journal

The purpose of this Article is to examine recent developments in the long-standing struggle by the United States and Mexico to cope with managing cross-border wastewater. Two notable legal developments have occurred recently that are fundamental to understanding the situation today. One is legislative, and the other is judicial. Neither has received scholarly comment. The first is the enactment of Tijuana River Valley Estuary and Beach Cleanup Act, which was signed into United States' law in 2000. It signified a significant change in policy by Congress. Prior to the enactment of the Cleanup Act, the international agreement contained in Minute …

Regulating Foreign Vessels Under The Clean Air Act: The Case For A Permissible Administrative Interpretation, Dan Lickel May 2002

Regulating Foreign Vessels Under The Clean Air Act: The Case For A Permissible Administrative Interpretation, Dan Lickel

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment will argue that the EPA may regulate the emissions of large sea-going vessels flying foreign flags that enter the territorial sea, contiguous zone, or Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the United States, under Section 213 of the CAA, notwithstanding conventional and customary Law of the Sea and other international treaties governing vessel source pollution. Part II of the comment presents background material that explains the provisions of the CAA, which mandate the EPA to regulate international shipping vessels. This section also presents the regulatory schemes developed by the IMO and the EPA. Part III evaluates whether the EPA …

Reparations For Slavery: A Dream Deferred, Watson Branch May 2002

Reparations For Slavery: A Dream Deferred, Watson Branch

San Diego International Law Journal

When the year began, the prediction was that 2001 was going to be the "Year of Reparations." Both internationally and in the United States, the consensus held that the time had finally come for governments around the world to face up to racism and apologize for the harm brought about by slavery and its aftermath harm in the past, to those long dead, and in the present, to those who, because of the color of their skin, still suffer from racism. Governments were expected to make amends for that harm through restitution and compensation, whether individual or collective. This willingness …

Rescue Of Embryonic Dysmorphogenesis In Diabetic Rats By Using The Antioxidant Α- Lipoic Acid, Muhaira Hamad Majed Al Ghafli May 2002

Rescue Of Embryonic Dysmorphogenesis In Diabetic Rats By Using The Antioxidant Α- Lipoic Acid, Muhaira Hamad Majed Al Ghafli

Theses

Background:

The risk of congenital anomalies in children of diabetic mothers is three to four times that in offspring of non-diabetic mothers. The exact mechanisms of these birth defects are not known. Of the several factors suggested to contribute to embryonic maldevelopment in diabetic pregnancy, the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent disturbances to cellar defenses appears to be a plausible hypothesis. Antioxidants have been reported to rescue the embryos from being malformed in animal experiments. This study was aimed to determine if the ideal antioxidant lipoic acid would ameliorate the embryos from maternal diabetes-induced anomalies.

Methods:

Female …

The Role Of Audiology Assistants In A Clinical Setting, Joseph K. Duran May 2002

The Role Of Audiology Assistants In A Clinical Setting, Joseph K. Duran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The employment of audiology assistants to relieve masters and doctoral level audiologists of routine tasks is a timely and controversial topic in our field. Berardino (2000) examined the roles of audiology assistants within Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospitals using an e-mail survey that was sent out to VA audiologists. The results of that survey suggested that the majority of VA audiologists were in favor of the participation of audiology assistants in the clinic to varying degrees. The purpose of this survey was to determine the current attitudes of audiologists and otolaryngologists toward the role of audiology assistants in the hearing health …

The Effects Of Induced Depressed Mood On Recall Of Experiences With Racial Discrimination, Tamra Williams May 2002

The Effects Of Induced Depressed Mood On Recall Of Experiences With Racial Discrimination, Tamra Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two studies examined the relationship between reported racial discrimination and depression, and whether this relationship may be due to depressed mood induced influences. In study 1, sixty-four African American undergraduates completed measures of current depression, a racial discrimination index, and rated vignettes that were ambiguous in terms of the presence or absence of racial discrimination. A significant correlation was found between depression and reported racial discrimination. The purpose of Study 2 was to examine the effect of mood on recall of past experiences with discrimination. Groups of subjects were randomly assigned to either a sad mood induction condition or a …

Promoting Equality And Access In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Of State Sponsored Preferential Policies In Great Britain, India And South Africa, Lanaia C. Dubose May 2002

Promoting Equality And Access In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Of State Sponsored Preferential Policies In Great Britain, India And South Africa, Lanaia C. Dubose

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Recent U.S. court decisions striking down affirmative action policies in college admissions have caused universities to seek diversity programs that can hold up to public and Jesa1 scrutiny while maintaining diversity on campus. The purpose of this thesis is to study the preference programs of other countries and determine if successful elements could be duplicated here in the United States. Specifically, the study looks at whether countries who use equality of opportunity programs (which focus on training initiatives) are more successful in increasing enrollment and hiring numbers of minorities than equality of outcome measures (which focus on quotas). The study …

Home-Care Nurses' Knowledge And Perceived Preparedness To Counsel Patients On Advance Directives, Mary Moran Barr May 2002

Home-Care Nurses' Knowledge And Perceived Preparedness To Counsel Patients On Advance Directives, Mary Moran Barr

Masters Theses

This study examined home-care nurses’ knowledge and perceived preparedness to counsel patients on advance directives (ADs). Joyce Fitzpatrick’s “life perspective rhythm” model provided the framework for the thesis. Sixty-two registered nurses actively practicing in home-care in West Michigan were surveyed over a 4-week period. Each nurse completed a 16-question survey, which included an 11-question true-false test of knowledge of ADs. Survey results indicated that nurses who feel prepared to counsel patients are more knowledgeable than those who do not feel prepared to counsel (t=2.89, df=57, p=<0.05). Overall knowledge was high (87.4%) but only 40 nurses (64%) felt prepared to counsel patients on ADs. The study implies that factors other than knowledge may have an impact on preparedness to counsel. Possibilities for further study include more research on education of healthcare providers about ADs, patient education, and the need for mutual discussions on end-of-life care issues in relationship to completing ADs.
