The Effects Of Life Space Crisis Intervention Training On Levels Of Teacher Stress And Time-Out Room Referrals, Michele Helfand May 2002

The Effects Of Life Space Crisis Intervention Training On Levels Of Teacher Stress And Time-Out Room Referrals, Michele Helfand

Theses

Student behavioral problems are often cited as factors contributing to school violence and teacher stress. School violence and teacher stress ultimately contribute to a deterioration in the quality of the educational system in our society. Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) is a strategy for using student problems as an opportunity to promote insight and behavior change. The intent of this study was to empirically examine the effects of a Life Space Crisis Intervention training. The outcome variables were teacher responses to a self report measure of stress (The Teacher Stress Inventory) and number and severity of time out room referrals. …

Role Of Driptips On Begonia Involucrata (Begoniaceae), May 2002, Ethan Householder May 2002

Role Of Driptips On Begonia Involucrata (Begoniaceae), May 2002, Ethan Householder

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study examined the dual role of multiple driptips of Begonia involucrata (Begoniaceae) in shedding excess water and minimizing erosion beneath a plant. One hundred and twenty leaves, having between one and four driptips were tested both with and without driptips to determine: the amount of water each leaf retained when a given amount was applied to its surface, the volume of soil displaced by each leaf, and the distance the soil was thrown by the drops. When driptips are removed, the amount of water retained on the leaf increases and the mean volume of soil displaced per driptip increases. …

The Effects Of Viewing Television Violence On School Children, Jennifer M. Morgan May 2002

The Effects Of Viewing Television Violence On School Children, Jennifer M. Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of viewing television violence on children. It was hypothesized that children who watch more than 3 to 4 hours of television daily, and who are exposed to inherently violent television programming in which physical and/or verbal confrontations and actions are commonplace, will be more likely than other peers to have received disciplinary referrals.

The study took place within an urban middle school serving children grades 6 through 8. A sample of 52 students was randomly selected, consisting of some students who had and some who had not received disciplinary referrals. …

Personality Traits And Motivational Influences On Smoking In Lesbians, Erin C. Aholt May 2002

Personality Traits And Motivational Influences On Smoking In Lesbians, Erin C. Aholt

Honors Theses

Past studies have suggested that lesbians are more prone than heterosexual women to smoke. This study examined whether different aspects of personality and temperament were predictors of tobacco use among lesbian smokers in comparison to lesbian nonsmokers. Participants consisted of 70 lesbians, 18 years or older, who completed an online survey containing the Big Five Inventory (BFI), the Gay Identity Questionnaire (GIQ), Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), and the Star Smoking Motivation Questionnaire (STAR -SMOQ). Results indicated that (1) there was a weaker correlation between smoking for weight suppression than has been reported in past studies of predominantly heterosexual …

The Benefit Of Alternative Scheduling On A Large High School, Brian Wert May 2002

The Benefit Of Alternative Scheduling On A Large High School, Brian Wert

Theses and Dissertations

In 2002 the teaching staff at Washington Township High School were asked to participate in a survey that would determine what scheduling format would benefit the large population enrolled at their school. This report presents the results of an analysis of a needs assessment survey administered to the entire staff. The results of this mandatory survey were compiled manually and appear in tabular form. The analysis of the results of the teacher survey yields the following findings: most teachers felt that the "nine period day" scheduling option would best address the needs of WTHS with regard to mechanics and logistics. …

The Implementation Of A Disciple-Making Process In The Local Church, Eldon Babcock May 2002

The Implementation Of A Disciple-Making Process In The Local Church, Eldon Babcock

Doctor of Ministry

The project for this dissertation is to look at a disciple-making process for the local church and how to implement this process with a suggested curriculum. In order to accomplish this project I will visit five churches with the purpose of viewing the successes and failures of the disciple-making process that they may or may not have. In the first section of my dissertation I give an introduction covering why I believe the churches need a philosophy of discipleship and in later chapters address the need for one-on-one ministry that reproduces disciples for Christ. I will give definitions for Life …

Provider Type And Depression Treatment Adequacy, Thomas J. Kniesner, Regina H. Powers, Thomas W. Croghan May 2002

Provider Type And Depression Treatment Adequacy, Thomas J. Kniesner, Regina H. Powers, Thomas W. Croghan

Center for Policy Research

We investigate the effect of initial provider (primary care physician, psychiatrist, or non-physician mental health specialist) on the adequacy of subsequent treatment for persons with depression. Our data are from MarketScan®, a medical and pharmacy insurance claims database, which we use to estimate models of the likelihood of treatment for depression and the likelihood that any treatment received is adequate. Patients initially seeing psychiatrists are most likely to receive adequate treatment. Provider type has a statistically and medically significant effect on whether any treatment occurs but a smaller effect on treatment adequacy among treated patients. The results show …

Large Fries, Two Apples Pies: Rotational Leadership - An Ethnographic Investigation Into The Assimilation Of Corporate Values, A. Damos Solaru May 2002

Large Fries, Two Apples Pies: Rotational Leadership - An Ethnographic Investigation Into The Assimilation Of Corporate Values, A. Damos Solaru

Student Scholarship

The Problem: State and Federal welfare reform programs have had the effect of increasing the size of the work force by reducing the availability of benefits available to the long-term unemployed. Coming at a time when unemployment fell to record low levels, all new entrants to the work force were greeted with a large array of opportunities. For the previously unemployed welfare recipient, the experience of moving into the work force has not been easy. Unlike better-educated new entrants into the work force, former welfare recipients have lived in a society essentially outside of the mainstream. By developing outside of …

Newtown Stationary: Getting Communities Back Into The Economic Development Game, Charles T. Moses May 2002

Newtown Stationary: Getting Communities Back Into The Economic Development Game, Charles T. Moses

Student Scholarship

Today's inner cities can be places in which entrepreneurs, availing themselves of vertical and horizontal networks of business and community interests, can prosper. Government interventions such as the empowerment zone initiatives have generally not been successful in developing the indigenous entrepreneurial base in the inner city. Using the case of a single entrepreneur, this study explores alternative networking, inner city economics and the problem of failed statist policies as regards inner city economic development. It continues existing work aimed at deconstructing narratives that hold that inner cities lack effective reciprocal networks that would aid in economic development and details the …

The "Shop" Around The Corner: How Do Leadership Attitudes Effect An Organization? An Ethnographic Study, Barbara Clemenson May 2002

The "Shop" Around The Corner: How Do Leadership Attitudes Effect An Organization? An Ethnographic Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

Nonprofit leaders are frequently passionate about their organizations, many having devoted their lives and sacrificed significant material benefits for the sake of their causes. Often, though, this intense devotion unconsciously engenders an attitude of ownership towards their organizations (“This is my cause,” “I know best,” “No one else could possibly care/know/do as much as I do.”), rather than an attitude of stewardship (“We must welcome the best and all work in partnership together to address this great cause, and see that it continues addressing this need long after we are gone.”). This ethnographic study examined one nonprofit organization that espoused …

Antidumping And The Business Cycle: Filing Behavior And Itc Decision Making, Ke Yang May 2002

Antidumping And The Business Cycle: Filing Behavior And Itc Decision Making, Ke Yang

Student Work

Since the first national antidumping law was established in Canada in 1904, antidumping policy has evolved constantly as a legal trade restriction under General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) provisions. This paper studies the determinants of antidumping filings by U.S. industries from 1980 to 1995 using panel count regression analysis. The paper also investigates factors that influence the International Trade Commission’s (ITC) injury determinations over these cases. Considerable support is found for the importance of the business cycle in driving antidumping filings and affecting the ITC’s injury determinations. Other important determinants include industries’ capacity utilization ratio, industrial trade deficit, …

An Analysis Of Principled Advocacy In The Development Of The Uniform Mediation Act, Gregory Firestone May 2002

An Analysis Of Principled Advocacy In The Development Of The Uniform Mediation Act, Gregory Firestone

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In this piece, the author examines the drafting of the Uniform Mediation Act in light of the eleven guiding principles endorsed by the organizations represented by the author. The author examines and analyzes numerous shortcomings in the wording of the Act. This piece will closely examine the difficulty mediators, courts, and consumers may encounter once the Act is put into practice. The piece also serves as a guide for state legislatures considering implementing the Uniform Mediation Act, in that the author identifies problems states may have and offers solutions for the predicted difficulties. Necessarily, however the piece also reveals the …

Problems With The Adoption Of Proportionate Share Liability In Illinois Remediation Actions, Thomas Crowley May 2002

Problems With The Adoption Of Proportionate Share Liability In Illinois Remediation Actions, Thomas Crowley

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment argues that the Illinois Legislature's replacement of joint and several liability with proportionate share liability in environmental remediation actions was not carefully thought through. The author contends that the constitutionality of the system of proportionate share liability and the burdens of proof is highly questionable. Further, the piece advises that, given that the attempt to reform tort liability in the 1990s was not constitutional, the legislature should have carefully reconsidered the civil justice statutes related to environmental remediation actions. In the author's conclusion, the system of proportionate share liability should end with the same result as the attempt …

The Warsaw Convention: A Cat With Nine Lives Walks The Plank One More Time, Tamara A. Marshall May 2002

The Warsaw Convention: A Cat With Nine Lives Walks The Plank One More Time, Tamara A. Marshall

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment advocates elimination of the liability limits imposed under the Warsaw Convention in the event of an aviation accident. The comment first examines the history of the Warsaw Convention. Next, the comment looks at application of a subjective test to prove willful misconduct in order to overcome such liability limits. The application of a subjective test is analyzed in the context of two recent cases. Legislative intent in approving recent changes to the applicable Warsaw Convention language is also covered. The comment then calls for use of an objective test to establish willful misconduct and recommends ratification of the …

Biology Faculty Articles

In studies of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, the early host immune response is one of the determinants of viral persistence. The class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA), which present foreign antigen to cytolytic T cells, are integral components of this response. We hypothesized that the highly polymorphic HLA genes affect the outcome of an HCV infection. To test this hypothesis, we molecularly typed 231 persons with well-documented clearance of an HCV infection and 444 matched persistently infected persons. HLA-A*1101 (odds ratio [OR], 0.49; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.27 to 0.89), HLA-B*57 (OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.39 to …

A Comparison Of Physical And Performance Characteristics Of Ncaa Division I Football Players: 1987 And 2000, Craig A. Secora May 2002

A Comparison Of Physical And Performance Characteristics Of Ncaa Division I Football Players: 1987 And 2000, Craig A. Secora

Student Work

Few studies have established normative data on performance variables of football and fewer exist that compare results from one decade to the next. In 1985, Olson and Hunter compared the data from 1974 and 1984 on 13 Division I team's. Berg, Latin and Baechle (1990) collected normative data on 40 Division I teams and made comparisons to rankings, offensive vs. defensive players, position comparisons, and major conferences. However, this research is outdated and no current research has assessed the changes in performance variables over time for Division I football players. The purpose of this study is to compare normative data …

Peace Architecture, Luc Reychler May 2002

Peace Architecture, Luc Reychler

Peace and Conflict Studies

In the sixties the green and the peace movements alerted the international community of the deterioration of the environment and of the danger of nuclear conflicts. Since then, the green movement has been transformed into political parties, departments, jobs, environmental impact assessments and several international regimes. The first publication of the Club of Rome in 1972, Limits of Growth, had a catalyzing effect for raising life and death questions that confront mankind and claiming that planetary planning was the most important business on earth (Meadows 1972). The peace movement, on the other hand, evolved differently. There were some peak moments …

Difficulties In Achieving Coherent State And Local Fiscal Policy At The Intersection Of Direct Democracy And Republicanism: The Property Tax As A Case In Point, Mildred Wigfall Robinson May 2002

Difficulties In Achieving Coherent State And Local Fiscal Policy At The Intersection Of Direct Democracy And Republicanism: The Property Tax As A Case In Point, Mildred Wigfall Robinson

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Professor Robinson explores the uneasiness present when acts of "direct democracy" through means of voter referenda and ballot initiatives conflict with the ideals of representative government, using fiscal matters, such as the property tax, as an example.

Part I explores the changes that have taken place in the last two decades in voter strategy and in patterns of judicial interpretation, briefly reviewing the history of the property tax focusing on taxpayer reaction to long overdue attempts at administrative reform, and showing how that effort indirectly contributed to the "taxpayer revolt. "It further examines how and why broad-scale attempts to utilize …
