Alfalfa Production And Pest Management In South Dakota, Mike Catangui, Martin Draper, Leon Wrage, Darrell Deneke May 2002

Alfalfa Production And Pest Management In South Dakota, Mike Catangui, Martin Draper, Leon Wrage, Darrell Deneke

SDSU Extension Special Series

Alfalfa is a herbaceous perennial forage crop in the plant family Medicago. Alfalfa is well adapted to growing conditions in South Dakota if a variety with good winter hardiness has been selected. Several vegetative stems are produced from the crown during each growth cycle, and the plant has a deep, branched taproot system that allows it to produce acceptable forage yields, even under relatively dry conditions.
South Dakota is one of the leading alfalfa growing states in the U.S., annually producing more than six million tons of alfalfa hay for all uses.

Effect Of Body Fat Measurement At Breeding And Gestation Energy Level On Farrowing And Lactation Performance Of First Parity Sows, G.W. Libal May 2002

Effect Of Body Fat Measurement At Breeding And Gestation Energy Level On Farrowing And Lactation Performance Of First Parity Sows, G.W. Libal

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

Records kept by the swine industry reveal that a large precentage of females entering the sow herd are culled prior to reaching their peak reproductive performance expected in their fourth to sixth parity. In herds with low replacement rates over 30% of the females are culled and in herds with high replacement rates this figure exceeds 50% annually. Of those sows not culled for health or structural problems, most are removed because they fail to return to estrus or fail to maintain pregnancy after their first or second litter. Low feed intake and excessive weight loss during lactation have been …

Transmission Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus By Semen Is Dose Dependent, C.D. Nelson, R.R. Rowland, D.A. Benfield

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

Procine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is transmitted through semen via natural mating or atrificial insemination. However, the minimal infective dose of PRRSV required to effect transmission through semen is not known. In this study, we induced estrus in PRRSV seronegative gilts and then artificially inseminated these animals with extended, commercial boar semen “seeded” with difference concentrations (2, 20, 200, 2,000, 20,000, 200,000, or 2,000,000 TCID50/50 ml of semen) of the PRRSV isolate SD 92-23983. Infection of gilts by PRRSV was confirmed by weekly bleedings of these animals to detect serconversion using the commercial IDEXX ELISA. All pigs (n=7) …

The Differences Between Dorothy Wordsworth's Journals And William Wordsworth's Poetry: Applying The Principles Of "Preface", Susan Dean Elzey May 2002

The Differences Between Dorothy Wordsworth's Journals And William Wordsworth's Poetry: Applying The Principles Of "Preface", Susan Dean Elzey

Theses & Honors Papers

The difference between the accounts of Dorothy Wordsworth and William Wordsworth of the events they experience together is studied. At times it almost seems like William contradicts himself in his dictums. However, that assumption is not the case. He takes from Dorothy’s journals a memory, an idea, a description and uses it as the foundation of deeper and more personal poetic revelations that Dorothy ever did. Together, through their writings, the brother and sister illustrate the basic definition of what it is to be a poet. Dorothy was not a poet, William was.

Test-Relief Reliability Of The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test With Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Julia Pendley May 2002

Test-Relief Reliability Of The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test With Children Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Julia Pendley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (Bracken & McCallum, 1998 [UNIT]) is a relatively new intelligence test that is administered in an entirely nonverbal way. Research supports the use of this test with special populations such as those with learning disabilities, those who are intellectually gifted, as well as with those who have speech/language impairments (Bracken & McCallum, 1998). One population not accounted for in the test's standardization sample are children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study investigates the test-retest reliability of the UNIT with children diagnosed with ADHD. Another main focus of this study involves determining the …

Training Practices In School Consultation: Twenty Years Later, Terri Owens

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Consultation has long been noted in the literature as a preferred role of school psychologists (Curtis & Zins, 1980; Gutkin & Curtis, 1982). Yet, few studies have examined University training practices in the area of consultation. This study, in part, replicated a study conducted by Meyers, Wurtz, and Flanagan (1981) that examined training practices 20 years ago. Currently, Program Directors from school psychology training programs in the United States were asked to describe how their training program addressed consultation. The number of courses offered in consultation, the methods used to teach consultation, and the models of consultation taught to school …

The Influence Of Religiosity And Fundamentalism On White Protestants' Attitudes Toward Women's Issues, Ashley Foster

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines factors of religiosity and fundamentalism that lead to sexist attitudes toward various women's issues. Analysis of data from the 1996 General Social Survey was implemented to ascertain the dependent variables: the Attitude toward Abortion Scale, the Women in Politics Scale, the Familial Roles Scale, the Attitude toward the Women's Movement Scale, Biology as a Reason for Women Taking Care of Children, God's Will as a Reason for Women Taking Care of Children, Importance of Women's Issues and Self-report Being Feminist. The correlations and regressions between measures of religiosity (church attendance and strength of affiliation) and attitudes toward …

A Study Of The Relationships Among Secondary Traumatic Stress, Coping, And Years Of Service In Firefighter/Emergency Medical Service Personnel, Lynne S. Sanders May 2002

A Study Of The Relationships Among Secondary Traumatic Stress, Coping, And Years Of Service In Firefighter/Emergency Medical Service Personnel, Lynne S. Sanders

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among stress, coping, and years of service in rescue personnel. One hundred sixteen voluntary subjects employed in Fire/EMS service in a small southern city participated in the study. Subjects completed a demographic questionnaire, The Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS), and The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS).

The incidence of symptomatic stress for the sample was 19.8 percent, higher than the general population but comparable to rates found in other studies of rescue workers. Calls involving children were rated as most disturbing by the subjects. There was no relationship found between years …

Mutagenesis Induced By The Tumor Microenvironment: Implications Of Increased Dna Damage And Diminished Dna Repair, Jianling Yuan May 2002

Mutagenesis Induced By The Tumor Microenvironment: Implications Of Increased Dna Damage And Diminished Dna Repair, Jianling Yuan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Tumors are characterized by microenvironmental heterogeneity, with regions of hypoxia, low pH, and nutrient deprivation. It has been proposed that such conditions may be an important factor contributing to cancer genetic instability. Using a chromosomally based lambda phage shuttle vector as a mutation reporter, we show that growth of cells in hypoxia and/or at low pH results in elevated mutation frequencies in two different reporter genes. To elucidate the mechanism of the tumor microenvironment-induced genetic instability, we first measured the production of DNA damage upon hypoxia and re-oxygenation in culture. We found that under such conditions, the intracellular level of …

Infant Feeding Styles: Barriers And Opportunities For Good Nutrition In India, Patrice L. Engle May 2002

Infant Feeding Styles: Barriers And Opportunities For Good Nutrition In India, Patrice L. Engle

Psychology and Child Development

India has the lion’s share of malnourished children in the world. Poverty and social exclusion contribute to this rate of malnutrition, but care practices also play a role.Breastfeeding is rarely exclusive, sanitation tends to be limited, complementary feeding often begins late, and the quantities are small. In the past, government programs have focused on the supply of food rather than caring practices. A research agenda will include both operational research on the nutrition programs, and formative and intervention research to improve caring practices, particularly those around infant and young child feeding.

Species-Specific Identification Of Commercial Probiotic Strains, Marie Yeung, M. E. Sanders, Christopher L. Kitts, Raul Cano, Phillip S. Tong May 2002

Species-Specific Identification Of Commercial Probiotic Strains, Marie Yeung, M. E. Sanders, Christopher L. Kitts, Raul Cano, Phillip S. Tong

Biological Sciences

Products containing probiotic bacteria are gaining popularity, increasing the importance of their accurate speciation. Unfortunately, studies have suggested that improper labeling of probiotic species is common in commercial products. Species identification of a bank of commercial probiotic strains was attempted using partial 16S rDNA sequencing, carbohydrate fermentation analysis, and cellular fatty acid methyl ester analysis. Results from partial 16S rDNA sequencing indicated discrepancies between species designations for 26 out of 58 strains tested, including two ATCC Lactobacillus strains. When considering only the commercial strains obtained directly from the manufacturers, 14 of 29 strains carried species designations different from those obtained …

Strategic Environmental Policy And International Trade In Asymmetric Oligopoly Markets, Yann Duval, Stephen F. Hamilton May 2002

Strategic Environmental Policy And International Trade In Asymmetric Oligopoly Markets, Yann Duval, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

This paper examines optimal cooperative and non-cooperative environmental taxes for the case in which a polluting input is used to produce an internationally-traded finished product. The model allows for terms-of-trade effects under oligopoly and employs a general specification of the environmental damage function that encompasses special cases of local, global, and transboundary externalities. The model has several implications for public finance. For example, inefficiently high environmental taxes may be optimal for a net exporting country in non-cooperative circumstances, as the motive to shift rent by selecting an inefficiently low tax rate is countervailed by the incentive to shift the burden …

The Effects Of Oral Antibiotic Therapy On Productivity And Immune Function Following Challenge With E. Coli And Rotavirus, C.C.L. Chase, D.J. Hurley, R.C. Thaler

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

Early weaning programs have been aimed at the control and elimination of respiratory infections in the young pig. Segregation from their dams at less than 21 days, batch rearing with all-in and all-out by room, building, or site, and proper biosecurity (cleaning, disinfecting, and quarantine) are mandatory to implement early weaning programs1. Early weaning with all its components gives a tremendous economic advantage to those who use this technology. This technology however does not come without a cost. This requires necessary building sites, scheduling and a high level of management. Enteric infections such as neonatal coccidiosis and post weaning diarrhea …
