Individualism/Collectivism, Psychological Processes, And Styles Of Conflict Resolution, Gangaw Zaw
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Conflict resolution styles in relation to Individualist (IND) and Collectivist (COL) value orientations were examined in the present study. Past research (Ting-Toomey et al., 1991, Pearson et al., 1998) has focused on cultural groups in order to explain conflict resolution styles. The current study analyzed conflict resolution styles (using the ROCIII) in relation to antecedent variables of culture, measured by the Collectivism and Individualism scale (Thandis et. al. 1993) as well as attribution processes and related emotions. Psychological factors such as causal attributions (the belief to which other's actions are attributed) and interpersonal emotions such as anger and empathic feelings …
Inducible Gene Expression In Cell Cultures And In Microencapsulated Cells, Yong Yu
Inducible Gene Expression In Cell Cultures And In Microencapsulated Cells, Yong Yu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The mifepristone-regulated transcriptional activation system provides a means to exogenously control gene expression in transformed mammalian cells in a temporal and spatial fashion. Such a promoter activation system consists of three components: The first of these is a steroidal inducer drug, mifepristone. This drug binds to the second component, a chimeric transcription factor complex, consisting of the mutant human progesterone receptor fused to the yeast GAL4 DNA-binding domain and the Herpes simplex virus protein VP 16 activation domain. The third component is a synthetic promoter, consisting of a series of GAL4 recognition sequences upstream of the adenovirus major late E1B …

The Relationship Between The Osteonal Cement Line And Bone Strength, Avery Kazuhiro Egerer
The Relationship Between The Osteonal Cement Line And Bone Strength, Avery Kazuhiro Egerer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Bone includes many structural and chemical components which provide both flexibility and strength. One such structure is the cement line, a 1-5 μm-thin structure located primarily in compact bone. Past research has correlated the pathological condition of “shin splints” with the micro-damage of bone, which often follows cement lines. It has been suggested that cement lines have rather paradoxical properties. Upon fatigue fracture of bone, microcracks often travel along cement lines and become trapped. This trapping and subsequent dispersion of energy have been hypothesized to prevent a complete fracture from occurring, extending bone life. Cement lines have been implicated in …
Carte Blanche For Cruelty: The Non-Enforcement Of The Animal Welfare Act, Katharine M. Swanson
Carte Blanche For Cruelty: The Non-Enforcement Of The Animal Welfare Act, Katharine M. Swanson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Note explores both the judicial and administrative underenforcement of the Animal Welfare Act in protecting the welfare of laboratory animals used for purposes of experimentation. Specifically, the Note suggests that judicial underenforcement is borne as a result of the difficulties of lodging a private cause of action under the Act or gaining standing under the alternative statutory scheme of the Administrative Procedure Act. It further suggests administrative underenforcement in describing the promulgated regulations of the Act as inadequate and the lack of self-policing mechanisms. Finally, the Note suggests some ways that enforcement can be made more effective in these …

What Do We Assess When We Assess A Big 5 Trait? : A Content Analysis Of The Affective, Behavioral, And Cognitive Processes Represented In Big 5 Personality Inventories, Lisa M. Pytlik Zillig, Scott H. Hemenover, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
What are personality traits? Are all “broad” traits equally broad in the constructs they encompass and in the pervasiveness of their effects? Or are some traits more or less affective, behavioral, or cognitive in nature? The present study examined these issues as they applied to the Big 5 traits of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Expert and novice raters judged the extent to which items from four popular Big 5 inventories contain behavioral, cognitive, or affective components. Traits and inventories were then compared in terms of their relative assessment of these components. Results indicate convergence among inventories but remarkable …
Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Diabetes Disease Management Program: Progress In The Struggle For Sustained Behavior Change, Janice Clarke, Albert Crawford, David B. Nash
Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Diabetes Disease Management Program: Progress In The Struggle For Sustained Behavior Change, Janice Clarke, Albert Crawford, David B. Nash
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
The successful management of diabetes with a goal of achieving near-normoglycemia requires patients to make multiple lifestyle changes as part of an intensive, complex, and coordinated therapeutic regimen aimed at reducing the risk of complications associated with the disease. The difficulty in creating and sustaining these lifestyle behavior changes is a major stumbling block in achieving the desired therapeutic goal. An underlying assumption of comprehensive disease management is that regular, personal contact with nurses and ancillary health professionals will facilitate these lifestyle behavior changes for program participants. The results of a survey of self-reported data from 750 participants in a …
A Self Regenerating Diesel Emissions Particulate Trap Using A Non-Thermal Plasma, Bryce Rampersad
A Self Regenerating Diesel Emissions Particulate Trap Using A Non-Thermal Plasma, Bryce Rampersad
Theses
There is great concern about the adverse effects associated with exposure to diesel exhaust. There is increasing evidence that diesel exhaust particulate matter (PM) is carcinogenic and may cause cancer. Non-cancerous lung damage and respiratory problems are also associated with exposure to diesel exhaust as well as acid rain and smog. Diesel exhaust PM is very easily respirable once emitted into the atmosphere and therefore poses a significant health problem. A diesel engine emissions particle removal system which utilizes Electrostatic Precipitation (ESP) and Non Thermal Plasma (NTP) technologies was studied for trapping and oxidizing micron sized particles (0.01 to 10 …

Property Planning Manual For The Swan-Canning Catchment - February 2002, Catherine Nind, Kylie Banfield, Brian Lloyd
Farm Systems and Economics published reports
Perth, its suburbs and adjacent semi rural and rural areas are part of the Swan-Canning catchment. Ona broad scale the Swan and Canning Rivers are part of a large drainage system that collects and drains water from across the catchment via a myriad of small channels, creeks, brooks and drains which, working together, concentrates the flow into a single water body, the Swan-Canning Estuary. This drainage system collects water both from the surface of the land and also from water, which seeps beneath the surface and moves underground.
The water may contain a considerable variety of potential pollutants, such as …
Stretch-Induced Calcium Release In Smooth Muscle., Guangju Ji, Robert J Barsotti, Morris E Feldman, Michael I Kotlikoff
Stretch-Induced Calcium Release In Smooth Muscle., Guangju Ji, Robert J Barsotti, Morris E Feldman, Michael I Kotlikoff
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Smooth muscle cells undergo substantial increases in length, passively stretching during increases in intraluminal pressure in vessels and hollow organs. Active contractile responses to counteract increased transmural pressure were first described almost a century ago (Bayliss, 1902) and several mechanisms have been advanced to explain this phenomenon. We report here that elongation of smooth muscle cells results in ryanodine receptor-mediated Ca(2+) release in individual myocytes. Mechanical elongation of isolated, single urinary bladder myocytes to approximately 120% of slack length (DeltaL = 20) evoked Ca(2+) release from intracellular stores in the form of single Ca(2+) sparks and propagated Ca(2+) waves. Ca(2+) …

Further Examination Of Moore's Law With Data Envelopment Analysis, Timothy R. Anderson, Rolf Färe, Shawna Grosskopf, Lane Inman, Xiaoyu Song
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although it has stood the test of time for over 30 years, Moore's Law addresses but a single aspect of microprocessor design. As a proxy for technology, the number of transistors in an integrated circuit represents a limited perspective on the technology as a whole. Anderson et al. proposed a set of metrics by which to measure a technology, and a means to measure its progress over time utilizing data envelopment analysis. In this revised model, the assumption of state of the art (SOA) on product release is dropped, technical progress is measured iteratively over time, the effective time elapsed …
Environmental Middle School Making The Connection: Locally Grown Food And The Portland Public Schools' Meal Program, Paul Bender, Daniela Brod, Lauren Maloney, April Siebenaler, David Stocker
Environmental Middle School Making The Connection: Locally Grown Food And The Portland Public Schools' Meal Program, Paul Bender, Daniela Brod, Lauren Maloney, April Siebenaler, David Stocker
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
A recent "farms to school" movement designed to expand the range and quantity of local foods, especially produce, has taken root across the U.S, with support from the United States Department of Agriculture. After finding a suitable client school willing to introduce this idea in Portland, this project, identifies incremental and feasible steps that can be taken toward including more locally gown food into the Environmental Middle School's meal service. The main objectives of this project are:
- To increase the availability of locally grown foods at EMS, and ultimately in the Portland Public Schools meal service program
- To encourage food …
Dirty Coal : Voluntary International Environmental Agreements And Sustainable Development In The People's Republic Of China, Paul, G. Harris, Chihiro Udagawa
Dirty Coal : Voluntary International Environmental Agreements And Sustainable Development In The People's Republic Of China, Paul, G. Harris, Chihiro Udagawa
CAPS Working Paper Series
Agenda 21 is the voluminous policy document that emanated from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Using a brief case study of China’s energy use—specifically its use of coal—this article illustrates how the objectives of Agenda 21 are reflected in China’s economic development policies and practices. We address these kinds of questions: Has China endeavoured to implement environmentally sustainable development, as reflected in the chapters of Agenda 21? What does the case of energy use tell us about the utility of Agenda 21 objectives in China and other developing countries? What are some of the political and …
The Report Of The Attorney General's National Committee To Study The Antitrust Laws: A Retrospective, Thomas E. Kauper
The Report Of The Attorney General's National Committee To Study The Antitrust Laws: A Retrospective, Thomas E. Kauper
Michigan Law Review
In 1955, the third year of the Eisenhower administration, the Michigan Law Review published what I believe to be the only symposium on antitrust law ever to appear in its pages. The occasion was the release in March of that year of a Report of the Attorney General's National Committee to Study the Antitrust Laws,2 a nearly fourhundred- page examination of virtually all facets of federal antitrust doctrine and enforcement. The pages of the symposium led me of course to revisit the Report itself, a visit a little like seeing an old high school friend long forgotten some forty years …

Effect Of Added Mass On Human Unipedal Hopping, Gary P. Austin, Gladys E. Garrett, David Tiberio
Effect Of Added Mass On Human Unipedal Hopping, Gary P. Austin, Gladys E. Garrett, David Tiberio
All PTHMS Faculty Publications
Although hopping is considered a children's activity, it can be used to provide insight into the neuromuscular and biomechanical performance of adults. This study investigated whether mass added during unipedal hopping altered the vertical stiffness, hopping period, and angular kinematics of the lower exteremity of adults. Measures of two-dimensional kinematics and vertical force were made from 10 healthy men during hopping at a preferred period under three conditions: Body Mass, Body Mass +10%, and Body Mass +20%. Adding mass significantly increased hopping period and hip flexion without significantly affecting vertical stiffness, ankle dorsiflexion, or knee flexion. Overall, the findings agreed …
Effect Of Frequency On Human Unipedal Hopping, Gary P. Austin, David Tiberio, Gladys E. Garrett
Effect Of Frequency On Human Unipedal Hopping, Gary P. Austin, David Tiberio, Gladys E. Garrett
All PTHMS Faculty Publications
All mature forms of locomotion involve periods of unilateral stance. Unipedal hopping may provide useful information about the neuromuscular and biomechanical capabilities of a single lower extremity in adults. This study investigated whether hopping influenced vertical stiffness and lower extremity angular kinematics during human unipedal hopping. Vertical force and two-dimensional kinematics were measured in 10 healthy males hopping at three frequencies: preferred, +20%, and -20%. At +20%, compared to preferred, vertical stiffness increased 55% as hip flexion, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion decreased, while at -20%, vertical stiffness decreased 39.4% as hip flexion, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion increased. As …

All PTHMS Faculty Publications
This article will provide an overview of the problem-based learning process, and an illustration of how problem-based learning can facilitate development of critical appraisal necessary for evidence-based practice. It will trace the development of problem-based learning as an educational methodology for entry-level health professional education. The information seeking and appraisal themes common to both problem-based learning and evidence-based practice will be examined, along with the roles and responsibilities of faculty and tutors who are part of problem-based learning courses or curricula. Examples of strategies for student assessment will be discussed, for both mastery of didactic content and for contribution to …
