Framework And Architecture For The Management Of Event-Condition-Action (Eca) Rule Based Clinical Protocols, Kudakwashe Dube, Bing Wu, Jane Grimson

Conference papers

Computer-based support for the incorporation of clinical practice guidelines and protocol into daily practice has recently attracted a lot of research interest within the healthcare informatics area. The aim is not only to provide support for the flexible specification and execution of clinical guidelines or protocols but also the dynamic management of these guidelines or protocols. This paper presents a framework and architecture for the management of clinical protocols whose specification and execution models are based on the event-condition-action (ECA) rule paradigm.

Euclid Lives: The Survival Of Progressive Jurisprudence, Charles M. Haara, Michael Allan Wolf Jun 2002

Euclid Lives: The Survival Of Progressive Jurisprudence, Charles M. Haara, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court's expanded use of regulatory takings is making a highly controversial and confusing concept more difficult to apply and defend. The Court and commentators are invited to explore a different approach-- Progressive jurisprudence, as represented by the Court's enduring opinion in Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty Co . This Commentary examines the reinvigoration of the Takings Clause and, in historical and ideological terms, discusses the Progressiveness of Euclid and of the regulatory scheme the Euclid Court approved. Professors Haar and Wolf identify and explore five inquiries concerning the character of regulations affecting the use, ownership, and value …

And The Winner Is ... Trial Lawyers: When Does An Accommodation Under Title Ii Of The Ada Represent A Fundamental Alteration Of Competitive Sports, James B. York

Missouri Law Review

Prior to the United State Supreme Court’s decision in PGA Tour, Inc. v. Martin, fans could rest comfortably knowing that their games would stay true to the traditions they hold dear. After the decision, however, it appears that no rule, no matter how well established, is safe from a judicial determination that the rule is not fundamental and, thus, may be altered to accommodate individuals with disabilities. In PGA Tour, the Supreme Court forever changed when a proposed modification in competitive sports will be denied based on the fundamental alteration defense under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. …

A Comparison Between The Effects Of Diltiazem And Isosorbide Dinitrate On Digoxin Pharmacodynamics And Kinetics In The Treatment Of Patients With Chronic Ischemic Heart Failure, Afaf A. Mahgoub, Azza H. El-Medany, Ahmed S. Abdulatif Jun 2002

Abdulatif

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate) on digoxin kinetics and to estimate the efficacy and tolerability of these vasodilators when combined with digoxin for 10 days therapy in patients with congestive heart failure secondary to ischemic heart disease. METHODS: A double blind randomized cross over study was carried out to investigate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride 180 mg/day orally) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate 30 mg/day orally) on digoxin kinetics (0.25 mg/day orally), after 10 days therapy in patients with heart failure due to ischemic heart disease. …

Modular Machine Learning Methods For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Mia Kathleen Markey '94 Jun 2002

Modular Machine Learning Methods For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Mia Kathleen Markey '94

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to improve breast cancer diagnosis by reducing the number of benign biopsies performed. To this end, we investigated modular and ensemble systems of machine learning methods for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of breast cancer. A modular system partitions the input space into smaller domains, each of which is handled by a local model. An ensemble system uses multiple models for the same cases and combines the models' predictions.

Five supervised machine learning techniques (LDA, SVM, BP-ANN, CBR, CART) were trained to predict the biopsy outcome from mammographic findings (BIRADS™) and patient age based on a …

Transportation: A Crucial Issue For Adult Day Care In Vermont, Francis G. Caro, Regula H. Robnett, Jennifer Higgins Jun 2002

Transportation: A Crucial Issue For Adult Day Care In Vermont, Francis G. Caro, Regula H. Robnett, Jennifer Higgins

Gerontology Institute Publications

Transportation arrangements are an integral but fragile element in the effectiveness of adult day care services in Vermont and nationwide. Almost by definition, adult day center participants generally cannot drive due to cognitive and/or physical limitations. Since adult day care services are congregate in nature and serve community-residing elders, this long-term care option is feasible only when there are arrangements to transport elders to and from service centers. Transportation is therefore a major issue for adult day care services.

The aim of this report is to call attention to transportation issues in adult day care services in Vermont. The report …

Too Many Of A Good Thing? The Effects Of Multiple Motivations On Stress, Cost, Fulfillment, And Satisfaction , Marc T. Kiviniemi, Mark Snyder, Allen M. Omoto

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Individuals engage in behaviors to satisfy motivations and can engage in the same behavior to satisfy a variety of different motivations. Previous research has examined how differences in the overall amount of motivation influence outcomes but has not addressed how differences in the number of conceptually distinct motivations one has for a particular action influence outcomes. In two longitudinal field studies, individuals with more than one motivation for volunteering experienced greater negative outcomes than did those who volunteered to satisfy a single motivation. A laboratory study manipulated the number of motivations individuals had for engaging in a volunteer activity. Individuals …

Synthesis Of Cyclopropanes Via Organoiron Methodology: Stereoselective Preparation Of Cis-2-(2’-Carboxycyclopropyl)Glycine, Nathaniel J Wallock, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A stereoselective route to cis-2-(2′-carboxycyclopropyl)glycine has been developed. exo-Nucleophilic addition to the (bicyclo[5.1.0]octadienyl)iron(1+) cation establishes the relative stereochemistry at the cyclopropane ring and the α-stereocenter. Subsequent removal of the metal and cleavage of the cyclic diene gave the protected target 10, which upon hydrolysis gave 1.

The Clinical Irrelevance And Scientific Invalidity Of The "Minority" Notion: Deleting It From The Social Science Vocabulary, Doris Wilkinson Jun 2002

The Clinical Irrelevance And Scientific Invalidity Of The "Minority" Notion: Deleting It From The Social Science Vocabulary, Doris Wilkinson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A systematic socio-linguistic and historical analysis of the minority label reveals its multiple irregularities and imperfections. These encompass a misleading array of vastly dissimilar nationality or group designations and the erroneous comparison of behaviors and life styles with racial status. As it is currently applied in U.S. political culture and in a variety of disciplines including sociology and social work, the concept has virtually no substantive meaning nor reality-linked usefulness. A thorough appraisal of the consequences of the perpetual reliance on the notion demonstrates that it eradicates ethnic cultural diversity and ignores historical antecedents and the "lived" experiences of oppressed …

Blending The Roles Of Home Care Nursing And Cardiovascular Specialties: A Model For Nursing Practice In The Community, Margaret A. Guthaus, Diane White Jun 2002

Blending The Roles Of Home Care Nursing And Cardiovascular Specialties: A Model For Nursing Practice In The Community, Margaret A. Guthaus, Diane White

Peer Reviewed Articles

Changes in reimbursement and advances in technology have resulted in a decreased hospital stay for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. These patients are being discharged into the community setting earlier, resulting in an increased demand for transitional specialty home care. This article relates the experience of a Midwest home care agency charged with the development of specialty home care for these complex patients. It offers a new practice model for professional nursing staff delivering this level of care. This model challenges traditional beliefs that cardiac specialty home care can best be provided by nurses with critical care or acute care cardiology …

Are All Contracts Of Employment Exempt From The Provisions Of The Federal Arbitration Act - The Supreme Court Settles The Matter, B. Matthew Struble Jun 2002

Are All Contracts Of Employment Exempt From The Provisions Of The Federal Arbitration Act - The Supreme Court Settles The Matter, B. Matthew Struble

Missouri Law Review

Congress enacted the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”) in 1925 to reverse the longstanding hostility of courts toward agreements to arbitrate and to make such agreements specifically enforceable. Section 1 of the FAA exempts the employment contracts of “seamen, railroad employees, or any other class of workers engaged in foreign or interstate commerce” from the Act’s coverage. The breadth of that exemption has been an issue with the courts of appeals for the past six decades, with the overwhelming majority of courts holding that Section 1 exempts only the contracts of employment of transportation workers form the FAA. In Craft v. …

Protein-Protein Interactions And Muscle Cell Signaling Via Syntrophin, Shilpa A. Oak Jun 2002

Protein-Protein Interactions And Muscle Cell Signaling Via Syntrophin, Shilpa A. Oak

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Absence of dystrophin results in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a lethal neuromuscular d isorder that afflicts 1 in 3500 live male births. In the sarcolemma, dystrophin is associated with a complex of proteins and glycoproteins, known as the dystrophin glycoprotein complex. The DGC constituents are dystrophin, a-dys troglycan, b-dystroglycan, syntrophin, a-sarcoglycan, b-sarcoglycan, g-sarcoglycan, d-sarcoglycan, and sarcospan. Not al l of these are single protein species. The syntrophins consists of a group of three homologous proteins composed of acidic (a) and basic (b) components. Syntrophins are known to self-associate to form oligomers.

In this dissertation, syntrophin's oligomerization and its interactions with …
