Contracting For Quality: Medicare's Quality Improvement Organizations, Lisa Sprague Jun 2002

Contracting For Quality: Medicare's Quality Improvement Organizations, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

This paper examines the role of quality improvement organizations (QIOs, formerly known as PROs, or peer review organizations) in improving the quality of medical care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries in both fee-for-service and managed care environments. It looks at the expansion of the QIOs' portfolio in their seventh contract cycle to include quality improvement activities in nursing homes, home health services, and physicians' offices as well as responsibilities for public education. The paper explores the evolution of QIOs, changes in their priorities over time, and the projects in which they are engaged. It also considers their role in the formulation …

Title Ix Compliance In Intercollegiate Athletics, Michelle Andre Jun 2002

Title Ix Compliance In Intercollegiate Athletics, Michelle Andre

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine how institutions have been in compliance with Title IX at the New Jersey state schools that are part of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and are affiliated with the NCAA as Division III programs. The research was to show how these institutions felt they were in compliance and to explore whether they have met certain criteria and how programs have been dropped in order for institutions to meet a quota. I gathered my information via surveys. The subjects surveyed were both male and female athletic administrators at the state universities. Eighteen …

Treatment With Soluble Interleukin-15ralpha Exacerbates Intracellular Parasitic Infection By Blocking The Development Of Memory Cd8+ T Cell Response, Imtiaz A. Khan, Magali Moretto, Xiao-Qing Wei, Martha Williams, Joseph D. Schwartzman, F Y. Liew

Dartmouth Scholarship

Interferon (IFN)-γ–producing CD8+ T cells are important for the successful resolution of the obligate intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii by preventing the reactivation or controlling a repeat infection. Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that exogenous interleukin (IL)-15 treatment augments the CD8+ T cell response against the parasite. However, the role of endogenous IL-15 in the proliferation of activated/memory CD8+ T cells during toxoplasma or any other infection is unknown. In this study, we treated T. gondii immune mice with soluble IL-15 receptor α (sIL-15Rα) to block the host endogenous IL-15. The treatment markedly reduced the ability …

Memory Functioning In Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Trauma, Deanna Cosgrove Jun 2002

Memory Functioning In Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Trauma, Deanna Cosgrove

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the memory functioning in children exposed to domestic violence trauma. Research findings suggest that adult participants with a clinical diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) suffer from impairments in memory associated with reductions in hippocampal volume. However, a question arises as to whether children who have been exposed to domestic violence trauma will differ from controls in their memory functioning. A question also arises as to the relationship between the children's parent-reported behaviors and their memory functioning. The Children's Memory Scale (CMS) (Cohen, 1997) was administered …

Formation Of Buyer-Seller Trade Networks In A Quality-Differentiated Product Market, Alison Watts, Ping Wang Jun 2002

Formation Of Buyer-Seller Trade Networks In A Quality-Differentiated Product Market, Alison Watts, Ping Wang

Economics Discussion Papers

We examine the formation of buyer-seller links in an environment where exchange can only take place if such a link exists. Sellers can produce products of different qualities and multiple sellers of uniform or mixed quality can form an association to pool their customers setting uniform prices (called a sellers’ association). Buyers may form a trade link with either an individual seller or with a sellers’ association. We show which buyer-seller links will form and find the set of links (or networks) which are stable. Additionally, we show how these buyer-seller networks influence the price paid for the good or …
