Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2002

Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

The forty-four stained-glass windows (dating from 1540–44) that recount the mythological tale of Psyche in Chantilly’s Condé Museum present a unique semeiological challenge to scholars. Accompanied by lyric inscriptions of either four or eight lines, the panels reveal an image/text combination that represents a literal example of the Renaissance notion of ut pictura poesis. These seldom-discussed panels merit inquiry because they reflect certain historic, artistic, and literary trends that illustrate factional and intellectual movements crucial to understanding France of the early to mid-sixteenth century. In its examination of these issues, this essay asks three questions:
1) What is the political …

Would Smokers With Schizophrenia Benefit From A More Flexible Approach To Smoking Treatment?, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Susy B. Gulliver, Brian Hitsman Jun 2002

Would Smokers With Schizophrenia Benefit From A More Flexible Approach To Smoking Treatment?, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Susy B. Gulliver, Brian Hitsman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

We evaluated literature that addresses the notion that flexible smoking treatment approaches are warranted for smokers with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Understanding the biological and psychological mechanisms that increase the likelihood of smoking and decrease the motivation to quit for these individuals is addressed within the framework of a neurobiological model. We provide a brief overview of the limited smoking cessation treatment literature for patients with schizophrenia and compare abstinence-focused versus reduction-focused treatment modalities. The potential utility of the reduction-focused approach to tobacco treatment for these smokers is evaluated. Suggestions for future research to address the utility and efficacy of …

Improving Oral Health: Promise And Prospects, Jennifer Ryan

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper examines the variety of issues affecting access to oral health care in the United States. It considers the possibilities and challenges presented by public financing sources for dental care for low-income children and families—including Medicaid, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, and other safety net programs—and reviews a sampling of privately funded efforts at improving oral health access. The paper illustrates some of the major barriers to dental care, particularly the shortage of dentists willing to serve low-income and uninsured patients and the overall lack of growth in the dental workforce. It also considers the changing roles …

Child Care Characteristics And Quality In Nebraska, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Abbie Raikes, Helen Raikes, Julia C. Torquati, Brian Wilcox, Lanette Christensen

Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

The Midwest Child Care Research Consortium conducted a study of child care quality and characteristics of the child care work force in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri to help states establish a baseline for tracking quality over time, following initiatives, policy and other changes. The measures are not based on Nebraska child care licensing standards. Rather, using research-based measures of quality, they assess the extent to which quality indicators are present among the child care settings and in the work force. The current study included a random telephone survey of 2022 Midwestern child care providers (508 from Nebraska), conducted during …
