Should I Have Learned To Cook? Interviews With Women Lawyers Juggling Multiple Roles, Jacquelyn H. Slotkin Jul 2002

Should I Have Learned To Cook? Interviews With Women Lawyers Juggling Multiple Roles, Jacquelyn H. Slotkin

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This 1996 empirical study explores the quality of the professional and personal lives of a selected sample of women lawyers practicing in San Diego, California. The sixteen women interviewed are successful and productive attorneys. Their stories show these women lawyer's ability to find solutions to work-family issues. They are super women, managing rewarding careers, marriage, family, and community responsibilities. Women have found workplaces that accommodate conflicting demands, and thus allow for a balanced life. They have realized contentment in their professional and personal lives, but this research suggests a persistence of role conflict, a clash between their ideals and their …

The Seduction Of Power: An Analogy Of Incest And Antebellum Slavery, Lisa Haberman Jul 2002

The Seduction Of Power: An Analogy Of Incest And Antebellum Slavery, Lisa Haberman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This commentary discusses incest as a civil action authorized by the Thirteenth Amendment's prohibition of slavery. Slavery is the act of overcoming another person's personal power by fraud. It is a trespass on the living trust of another that usurps their inalienable right to self, or liberty. The illicit power exchange aggrandizes one at the expense of the other. The Thirteenth Amendment declared that slavery shall not exist in the United States. The Supreme Court then authorized Congress to legislate against private "discrimination that perpetuates the badges and incidents of slavery." In response, Congress enacted Title 42 Section 1983 of …

More than a quarter-century has passed since I entered law school as a first-year student and began what has become a career of reading, among other things, cases. I cannot even guess the number of cases I have read in the ensuing years. Most of them have been fairly ordinary, but many have been wonderful for one reason or another. Because I hope to read at least as many cases during my next twenty-five years (or more) of legal study, I am not yet ready to crown any particular case with the title of "my favorite," "the most significant," or …

Creep And Creep-Recovery Models For Wood Under High Stress Levels, Zhiyong Cai, Kenneth J. Fridley, Michael O. Hunt, David V. Rosowsky Jul 2002

Creep And Creep-Recovery Models For Wood Under High Stress Levels, Zhiyong Cai, Kenneth J. Fridley, Michael O. Hunt, David V. Rosowsky

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Forty small clear southern pine specimens were loaded under third-point bending to examine creep and creep-recovery behavior for wood under high stress levels. Stress levels of between 69% and 91% of the predicted static strength were applied for 23 h with 1 h allowed for recovery, and the resulting deflection vs. time behavior was studied. The experimental creep and creep-recovery behavior was modeled using modified power law functions. The results indicate that these functions provide the best fit to both primary and secondary experimental data. The empirical models can be used to simulate the viscoelastic behavior of wood under high …

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli Jul 2002

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Disabilities affect 54 million people and 4.4 million children in the U.S. and are of importance to special education faculty (Center for Disease Control 2000). A survey design examines the effectiveness of human-animal interaction, specifically horseback riding, in children with varying disabilities.

Therapeutic horseback riding as an animal assisted therapy, aims to promote mind and body integration through movement (psychomotricity) and the human-animal bond (Delta Society, 2001a; Spink, 1993, All, Loving & Crane, 1999). Effectiveness is measured by parent assessment of improvement in 67 child behaviors resulting from child participation in horseback riding, using a new Horseback Riding Survey. Behaviors …

May Harvey Rest In Peace: Lakin V. Postal Life And Casualty Company, Robert H. Jerry Ii

UF Law Faculty Publications

There is a case that has piqued my interest in recent years. Lakin v. Postal Life & Casualty Co., is a relatively simple story of two men whose paths crossed in Kansas City, Missouri, more than forty years ago. One was a down-in-the-luck drifter, and the other a con-artist who made his living by taking advantage of others. These two men would be long forgotten but for the fact that their final interactions during a hunting trip near Pleasant Hill, Missouri, raised some insurance law issues that ultimately made their way to the Missouri Supreme Court. Lakin stands for the …

Signal Parameter Estimation Based On One-Bit Quantized Data From Multiple Sensors, Antonios Mengoulis, R. Viswanathan, Ajay Mahajan Jul 2002

Signal Parameter Estimation Based On One-Bit Quantized Data From Multiple Sensors, Antonios Mengoulis, R. Viswanathan, Ajay Mahajan

Conference Proceedings

We consider the problem of signal parameter estimation using a collection of distributed sensors. Each sensor quantizes its data to one-bit information and sends it to a fusion processor for the estimation of the parameter. Estimation of a constant signal in additive noise is considered. Since the emphasis is for the case of a moderately large number of sensors, we consider in this study two cases of estimation with 8 sensors and 20 sensors. We formulate several estimators based on one-bit sensor data and evaluate their mean squared error performances through simulation studies. Two parametric noise densities are simulated to …

Validity Of Self-Reported Weight And Height Among Saudi School Children And Adolescents, Bahaa A. Abalkhail, Sherine Shawky, Nadia K. Soliman Jul 2002

Validity Of Self-Reported Weight And Height Among Saudi School Children And Adolescents, Bahaa A. Abalkhail, Sherine Shawky, Nadia K. Soliman

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between self-reported weight and height to actual weight and height in a cross-sectional representative sample of school students in Jeddah City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its relation to selected socio-economic and socio-demographic factors. Also to evaluate the validity of self-reported weight and height measurements. METHODS: Data was collected from a sample of Saudi school students in Jeddah City, KSA from 42 boys9 schools and 42 girls9 schools during the month of April 2000. Data collection was carried out by an in-person interview to collect sociodemographic and self-reported weight and height, as well as, actual …
