A Web-Based High Performance Simulation System For Transport And Retention Of Dissolved Contaminants In Soils, Honghai Zeng Aug 2002

A Web-Based High Performance Simulation System For Transport And Retention Of Dissolved Contaminants In Soils, Honghai Zeng

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater, the major source of human drinking water, is susceptible to contamination from industrial and agricultural activities. This research develops a web-based simulation system of remote high performance computing model for contaminant transport and retention in soils. A three-dimensional advection-dispersion-reaction MRTM model, based on previous experimental and theoretical studies, is proposed to analyze the transport and retention of chemical contaminants in groundwater flowing through soils. Since three-dimensional experiments are difficult to implement and verify, this simulation system provides scientists an alternative to trace the contaminant movement in soils outside laboratories. The alternating direction implicit (ADI) algorithm is used in this …

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan Aug 2002

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan

Theses and Dissertations

Unlike most other host-specific mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma gallinarum exists as a commensal with a host range including most poultry as well as some mammals. This property of M. gallinarum may reflect unique mechanisms for its colonization and persistence in hosts. Whereas M. gallinarum shows leucine and arginine aminopeptidase activity, the genes encoding the enzymes had not been cloned and characterized. We identified an aminopeptidase gene (APN) by oligonucleotide hybridization to a genomic library of M. gallinarum in lambda ZAPII bacteriophage. Nucleotide sequence analysis of overlapping phage clones identified a 1,362 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative leucine aminopeptidase gene. …

A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter Aug 2002

A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter

Theses and Dissertations

Since bone tissues grow in intimate contact with implant surfaces in vivo, there is a need to investigate how bone cells respond to mechanical loads adjacent to implants under well characterized loading conditions that stimulate the bone-implant surface. Thus, the objective of this study was to demonstrate an effective means for applying known, uniform, cyclic strain to cells growing on implant materials in vitro. A cell culture strain plate device was developed based on the application of the four-point bending principle. The device uses a small electric motor to drive belts attached to shafts which turn a set of cams. …

Referendum Petition To Overturn Greenhouse Gas Emissions Law.

Initiatives

REFERENDUM PETITION TO OVERTURN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS LAW. If signed by required number of electors and timely filed with Secretary of State, this petition will prevent implementation of Chapter 200, Statutes of2002, a law approved by the Legislature and Governor, unless and until a majority of voters approve the law. Law subject to this referendum will require adoption of regulations to regulate "greenhouse gas" emissions for 2009-and-newer model vehicles to reduce automobile emissions to slow global warming effects. Regulations cannot impose vehicle fees/taxes, vehicle category bans, and limitations on vehicle weight, speed limit and miles traveled.

Glutathione Levels And Bax Activation During Apoptosis Due To Oxidative Stress In Cells Expressing Wild-Type And Mutant Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator, Thomas Jungas, Iris Motta, Francis Duffieux, Pascale Fanen, Veronique Stoven, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cystic fibrosis is characterized by chronic inflammation and an imbalance in the concentrations of alveolar and lung oxidants and antioxidants, which result in cell damage. Modifications in lung glutathione concentrations are recognized as a salient feature of inflammatory lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, and glutathione plays a major role in protection against oxidative stress and is important in modulation of apoptosis. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is permeable to Cl−, larger organic ions, and reduced and oxidized forms of glutathione, and the ΔF508 CFTR mutation found in cystic fibrosis patients has been correlated with impaired glutathione transport …

Blurring The Line Between Liturgy And Popular Religion: An Example From The Hispano-Mozarabic Rite, Raúl R. Gómez S.D.S. Aug 2002

Blurring The Line Between Liturgy And Popular Religion: An Example From The Hispano-Mozarabic Rite, Raúl R. Gómez S.D.S.

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author considers the relationship between liturgy and popular religion in the wake of the Roman Catholic Church's renewal (1988) of the ancient Mozarabic rite, one of three ancient Latin liturgies, dating to the earliest centuries of the Church, that are practiced today. The author studies the Spanish Mozarabic rite, as practiced today at Santa Eulalia Church in Toledo, Spain. He concludes that "Mozarahs and their rite reflect the liturgy and spirituality of the earliest Hispanics," and thus "are an apt source for examining the roots of much contemporary Hispanic spirituality, especially as expressed in popular religion.

Hispanic Catholic Leadership: Key To The Future, Kenneth G. Davis, Andrew Hernández, Philip E. Lampe Aug 2002

Hispanic Catholic Leadership: Key To The Future, Kenneth G. Davis, Andrew Hernández, Philip E. Lampe

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This article assesses data from a 1999 survey of Hispanic adults concerning their experiences, needs, and deficits with respect to Hispanic-based leadership in their churches. Commissioned by the National Catholic Council on Hispanic Ministry (NCCHM), the study concluded that "because Hispanics are an increasingly important part of the Church in the United States (and society), Hispanic Catholic leadership development (especially among women, youth and young adults) requires an immediate and significant investment. Once formed, such leaders are very likely to contribute time, talent, and treasure to the Church."
