The Determination Of Serum Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Thoroughbred Foals And Their Dams After Parturition, Achara Tawatsin, Panumas Ruantongdee, Prachak Poomvises Dec 2002

The Determination Of Serum Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Thoroughbred Foals And Their Dams After Parturition, Achara Tawatsin, Panumas Ruantongdee, Prachak Poomvises

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in 5-35 thoroughbred foals and their dams during first 24 weeks after parturition were determined. Mean serum Cu in foals increased significantly (p < 0.01) with age, from 10.4±1.1 μmol/l at week 1 to 25.9±0.8 μmol/l at week 24, whereas those in mares decreased significantly p < 0.05, from 26.2±1.3 μmol/l at week 1 to 22.0±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 after parturition. There was a large negative correlation between the mean serum Cu concentrations in foals and their dams (r = -0.86, p < 0.01). Serum Zn concentrations in both foals and mares on the other hand, gradually decreased after parturition, ranging from and 17.7±0.3 μmol/l at week-1 to 13.8±0.5 μmol/l at week 24, in foals and from 16.2±1.2 μmol/l at week 1 to 14.4±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 in mares. The correlation coefficient between the mean serum Zn concentrations in foals and their mares was high (r = 0.895, p < 0.01).

Enhancing The Rigor Of Qualitative Research: Application Of A Case Methodology To Build Theories Of It Implementation, Guy Paré Dec 2002

Enhancing The Rigor Of Qualitative Research: Application Of A Case Methodology To Build Theories Of It Implementation, Guy Paré

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents and illustrates how the approach proposed by Eisenhardt (1989) for building theories from intensive qualitative research, more precisely case study research, can help information systems and medical informatics researchers understand and explain the inherently dynamic nature of IT implementation. The approach, which adopts a positivist view of research, relies on past literature and empirical data as well as on the insights of the researcher to build incrementally more powerful theories. We describe in some detail how this methodology was applied in a particular case study on IT implementation in the health care context and how the use …

Characterization Of Protective Antigens From The Midgut Of Amblyomma Variegatum Ticks, J. K. Kinyua, E. O. Osir, D. O. Ogoyi, E. K. Nguu Dec 2002

Characterization Of Protective Antigens From The Midgut Of Amblyomma Variegatum Ticks, J. K. Kinyua, E. O. Osir, D. O. Ogoyi, E. K. Nguu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Separation of midgut membrane proteins from the tick, Ambylomma variegatum, using a non-ionic detergent (Triton X-114), resulted in two protein fractions, namely DET (detergent) and AQ (aqueous). In immunoblotting analysis with polyclonal antibodies against these fractions, 4 proteins (Mr ∼ 27,000, 67,000, 86,000 and 95,000,) and 2 proteins (Mr ∼ 54,000 and 67,000) were detected in the DET and AQ fractions, respectively. Three of the DET fraction proteins Mr ∼ 27,000, 67,000 and 95,000 were glycosylated since they bound to the lectin, concanavalin A. In 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis, the AQ and DET fraction proteins were found to be acidic in …

Faulkner's Mothers: The Relationship Of Fact To Fiction In The Sound And The Fury And As I Lay Dying, Spring P. Zuidema Dec 2002

Faulkner's Mothers: The Relationship Of Fact To Fiction In The Sound And The Fury And As I Lay Dying, Spring P. Zuidema

Theses & Honors Papers

The author explores the relationship between actual events and circumstances in Faulkner’s own life and the fiction hat he wrote in his novels. William Faulkner was able to write his best work because he expected nothing from it. He was previously rejected by publishers, but furthermore rejected by his own family and two love interests. His mother was the only constant in his life. However she lacked love and caring and was domineering. These feelings of inferiority in Faulkner reflect in the children he wrote about and the traits of his mother reflect in the mothers in his novels as …

The Anchor, Volume 116.13: December 4, 2002, Hope College

The Anchor: 2002

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
