Non - Legitimate Illness, Embodied Experience And The Moral Career: The Case Of Me/Cfs, Tracey Collett Jan 2002

Non - Legitimate Illness, Embodied Experience And The Moral Career: The Case Of Me/Cfs, Tracey Collett

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The condition known as myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is an illness of unknown aetiology which affects over 150 000 persons in the UK. Whilst the cause of the condition is the subject of intense medical debate, the official view is that it is a form of atypical depression or somatisation disorder. This view is at odds with the views of many sufferers who claim that ME/CFS is a pathological disease that renders them severely incapacitated. Sufferers' maintain that, because their condition is regarded as a minor, psychological illness, its' severity is not recognised. Thus, rather than being …

The Effect Of Training Infant Joint Visual Attention On Novel Word Learning., Melissa S. Atkins Jan 2002

The Effect Of Training Infant Joint Visual Attention On Novel Word Learning., Melissa S. Atkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Joint visual attention is the ability to follow another person's line of vision. This ability develops toward the end of the human infant's first year, but can be trained as early as 8 months of age. Many studies have correlated infant joint visual attention abilities with language development, but there has been no experimental manipulation to determine whether there is a causal relation between joint visual attention and word learning. In the present study, 41 infants between 7.5 and 8.5 months of age were assigned to either the treatment or control group. The treatment group received a joint attention training …

Stereotypes, Intolerance, And Policy Supports For Women, Minorities, And Gays: The Diversity Course Impact On Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Sreb States., Christine J. Brehm Jan 2002

Stereotypes, Intolerance, And Policy Supports For Women, Minorities, And Gays: The Diversity Course Impact On Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Sreb States., Christine J. Brehm

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Problematic stereotyping of women, minorities, and gays in the United States may become justification for prejudicial attitudes that lead to political intolerance toward members of these marginalized groups. While images of others and a sense of political tolerance develop through childhood and preadult socialization, education beyond high school can have a significant impact on one's reliance on stereotypes when considering the granting or withholding of basic civil rights from marginalized members of society, and may also affect the position one takes towards policies created to benefit women, minorities, and gays. During the fall semester of 2000, an investigation of these …

Metal-Induced Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Related Cellular Injury., Stephen Sunday Leonard Jan 2002

Metal-Induced Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Related Cellular Injury., Stephen Sunday Leonard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metals have been indicated in causing generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular injury. The overall objective of the present study was to investigate ROS generation from metals and the related effects on biological systems. The results obtained from the present studies have demonstrated that: (a) Cobalt is capable of generating ·OH via a Co(I)-mediated Fenton-like reaction. (b) The ·OH radical is generated by reaction of H2O2 with Cr(V), which is produced by enzymatic one-electron reduction of Cr(VI). H2O2 is produced by reduction of molecular oxygen via O2·− as an intermediate. The ·OH radicals generated by these reactions are …

Policy Effectiveness And Instrument Selection: An Examination Of United States Organ And Tissue Donation Policies., Jennifer Lyn Mesich-Brant Jan 2002

Policy Effectiveness And Instrument Selection: An Examination Of United States Organ And Tissue Donation Policies., Jennifer Lyn Mesich-Brant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continuing advances in medical technology have made organ and tissue transplantation safer and more effective. However, organ and tissue donation has not increased at a similar pace. In order to promote donation and transplantation, federal and state governments have assumed an active role in educating citizens about the need for organs and tissues. This research examines why this policy area developed the way that it did and how effective it has been. I examine the need for a new policy typology and argue that policy type influences instrument selection. More specifically, I examine the effectiveness of policy changes in certain …

Uncertainties In Sediment Quality Weight-Of-Evidence (Woe) Assessments, Graeme E. Batley, G. Allen Burton, Peter M. Chapman, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2002

Uncertainties In Sediment Quality Weight-Of-Evidence (Woe) Assessments, Graeme E. Batley, G. Allen Burton, Peter M. Chapman, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Uncertainties in sediment quality assessments are discussed in five categories: (1) sediment sampling, transport and storage; (2) sediment chemistry; (3) ecotoxicology; (4) benthic community structure; and (5) data uncertainties and QA/QC. Three major exposure routes are considered: whole sediments, and waters in sediment pores and at the sediment-water interface. If these uncertainties are not recognized and addressed in the assessment process, then erroneous conclusions may result. Recommendations are provided for addressing the identified uncertainties in each of the key areas. The purpose of this paper is to improve the reporting of sediment quality assessments.

Creating Loyalty In Relationship Marketing: A Descriptive Study Of Supermarket Loyalty Programs., Catherine Maria Brumley Jan 2002

Creating Loyalty In Relationship Marketing: A Descriptive Study Of Supermarket Loyalty Programs., Catherine Maria Brumley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores the concept of loyalty marketing as a component of relationship marketing, by creating, building, and maintaining long-term relationships with customers to develop lifetime value and brand loyalty to one particular company or brand. The data highlights loyalty card programs implemented within the supermarket industry and evaluates those programs based on the variables of loyalty. The variables include trust, commitment, satisfaction, and value. The findings show documentation for or against the initial hypotheses, which involve factors affecting supermarket loyalty, such as convenience, price, and perceived brand value.

The Reluctant Delegate: Alexander Campbell And The Statehood Movement In Western Virginia., Jill Adana Rogers Jan 2002

The Reluctant Delegate: Alexander Campbell And The Statehood Movement In Western Virginia., Jill Adana Rogers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When Alexander Campbell, a young Scots-Irish minister, immigrated to the United States in 1809, he encountered a new nation that was pulsating with religious revival, hungry for more territory, and already divided by the “peculiar institution” of slavery. Within twenty years, Campbell established himself as a well-known religious reformer, educator, and landholder in Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Although Campbell otherwise believed in separation of church and state, he agreed to participate as a western political delegate to the 1829-1830 Virginia Constitutional Convention. Campbell’s able representation of western sectional interests astounded other more politically experienced delegates. Disheartened by eastern Virginia’s suppression of …

How Does Spousal Education Matter? Some Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii, Sophal Ear Jan 2002

How Does Spousal Education Matter? Some Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii, Sophal Ear

Research Collection School Of Economics

An econometric analysis of the World Food Programme Civil Insecurity Baseline Survey (1998) and Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey (1999) data is undertaken to examine the role of education and literacy in explaining household expenditure, as hypothesized in human capital theory where education is an investment with returns in the form of income. Explanatory variables were selected from a large set of observed variables by a systematic procedure to avoid the bias arising from arbitrary model selection. Spousal education and literacy are found to be significant explanatory variables in the determination of household expenditure, exceeding even the coefficients attached to the head …

Listening To Recent High School Dropouts And The Need To Reconceptualize School Violence Prevention, Beatrice A. Geddie Jan 2002

Listening To Recent High School Dropouts And The Need To Reconceptualize School Violence Prevention, Beatrice A. Geddie

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

As the high school dropout rates in Georgia exceed the national average, public concern mounts. The complex interactions of internal and external factors that contribute to students' decisions to leave school before graduation require reconceptualizing the educational process on multiple levels. This dissertation addresses current public school policies designed to prevent violent acts and punish offenders, policies that reveal limited understanding of underlying causes, deterministic assumptions and an overwhelming desire for quick fixes. Interviewees deemed many of these policies not only ineffectual, but also as contributing to a negative school climate that encouraged them to drop out. Furthermore, some participants …

Exploring Korean Values by Steven R. Brown and Byung-Ok Kil

The contours of the Korean value system are examined both extensively and through an intensive single-case study in which a representative personality is invited to appraise a set of historical figures under various conditions of instruction focused on Confucian and other values. The Q sample is comprised of the names of 50 historical and contemporary figures (e.g., Kim Ok-Gyun, assassinated reformer of the late Yi dynasty; Chun Bong-Joon, religious leader associated with peasant revolts in the late 19th century; Lee Hwang, 15th century Confucian scholar, et al.). Initially, 25 Korean …

The Changed World of South Asia: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India after September 11 by Richard J. Kozicki

The unprecedented attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 dramatically reoriented American policy interests in South Asia. Before the attacks, the George W. Bush administration had nearly relegated Pakistan to the category of a ‘rogue state’ because of its coup against a democratically elected government, its support for the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, its involvement in terrorist insurgency in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, and its involvement in nuclear and ballistic missiles deals with China and North Korea. In the immediate aftermath …

The Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law is always an important gathering in the international legal community. It is a chance for everyone interested in international law to come together to deepen our understanding of the developments in the field. Ultimately, the aim of the discussion is to advance the international rule of law in the world.

To focus discussion at the 2002 Annual Meeting, we chose two intersecting developments that merited considered reflection: the legalization of international relations and the internationalization of legal relations. Representing two sides of the same coin, these twin themes, it was …

A Comparison Of Perceived Social Responsibility Standards With Perceived Social Responsibility Performance In The Australian Banking Industry : A Stakeholder Analysis, William J. Phillips Jan 2002

A Comparison Of Perceived Social Responsibility Standards With Perceived Social Responsibility Performance In The Australian Banking Industry : A Stakeholder Analysis, William J. Phillips

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study is to investigate extent to which Australian banking corporations embrace social responsibility. It endeavours to establish the meaning of social responsibility generally and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in particular. In view of the multiple definitions of the concept of ‘social responsibility’ offered by various authors Such.1 Boatright (1993), Freeman (1994), Walters (1977), and Wheeler (1998), the views of power dependent Australian bank stakeholders were solicited to form an operational definition for the study. This created a collective conception of social responsibility as it is applied to Australian banks, allowing corporate social responsibility standards to be …

Body Perceptions Of Western Australian Female Group Fitness Instructors And The Influence Of The Workplace, Lana Leslie Jan 2002

Body Perceptions Of Western Australian Female Group Fitness Instructors And The Influence Of The Workplace, Lana Leslie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Group fitness instructors work in an environment that promotes the often unattainable pursuit of an ideal body shape. The fitness centre often displays pictures of slim body shapes on the walls and sells goods and services that relate to weight loss and the improvement of the appearance. The instructors are part of this environment that promotes ideal body shapes, and they arc often seen as role models of health, fitness and slimness. It is possible that instructors arc under pressure to attain or maintain an ideal body shape, to be consistent with what their work environment represents. The purpose of …

Crossing Over The Line : Becoming A Marijuana User Alters Perceptions Of Source And Message Credibility In Anti-Drug Campaigns, Fiona Perman

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Illicit-drug use is a major problem in our society. Policing, charging and incarcerating offenders incurs a significant strain on government resources, and results in criminal records for those found guilty. This study examines the attitudes and beliefs of young adults (18-24 years) toward social marketing messages about marijuana and other illicit-drug use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect various levels of marijuana use have on young people’s acceptance of anti-drug messages. That is, do source and message credibility change as a result of young people’s experience of marijuana use?
