Factors Influencing Mammography Utilization Among Disabled And Nondisabled Women, Jeffrey S. Legg Jan 2002

Factors Influencing Mammography Utilization Among Disabled And Nondisabled Women, Jeffrey S. Legg

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in women in the United States. Because the majority of risk factors for breast cancer are not modifiable, early detection methods such as mammography are essential. However, concern exists for the equitable provision and use of mammography services in the U.S. Mammography is ofien underutilized by various subpopulations resulting, potentially, in these groups not experiencing the benefits of early detection. A subpopulation that has received little attention in the study of mammography utilization encompasses persons classified as disabled.

The 1998 National Health Interview Survey provided the data for this analysis. …

The Association Of Organizational Performance And Market Factors With Hospital Acquisition, Jeffrey P. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

har_ass

This research focuses on the relationship between hospital acquisition and operational performance, market factors, and organizational factors following the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Resource dependence and financial theory guided the methodology. According to resource dependence theory, organizations desire to remain autonomous until they are faced with scarce resources. Financial theory recognizes the organizations ability to be successful by ensuring access to capital through profitability, strong bond ratings, lines of credit, and equity financing. The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 reduced hospital Medicare reimbursement and …

Band Selection And Algorithm Development For Remote Sensing Of Wildfires, Andrew Fordham Jan 2002

Band Selection And Algorithm Development For Remote Sensing Of Wildfires, Andrew Fordham

Theses

The environmental damage and global change caused by wildfires are fast becoming issues of local, regional and global concern. Remote sensing techniques are an ideal tool to use for monitoring these threats. Unfortunately, most existing satellites were built for other purposes and are less than ideal for the problems associated with detecting, assessing and monitoring fires. This thesis examines the phenomenology of fires and rank orders several non-traditional detection strategies that have the promise of being more cost effective and less susceptible to false alarms than existing satellite systems and algorithms. The possibility of detecting fires with multi-band "color" measurements …

The results were as follows: 1) the concept of multidimensional sustainability is generally understood; 2) integrating multidimensional sustainability is the morally and ethically correct action for pharmaceutical companies to …

Disability, Doctors And Dollars: Distinguishing The Three Faces Of Reasonable Accommodation, Elizabeth Pendo Jan 2002

Disability, Doctors And Dollars: Distinguishing The Three Faces Of Reasonable Accommodation, Elizabeth Pendo

All Faculty Scholarship

Despite a decade of litigation, there is no consistent understanding of the reasonable accommodation requirement of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the 'ADA'). Indeed, there are three inconsistent distributive outcomes that appear to comport with the reasonable accommodation requirement: cost-shifting, cost-sharing, and cost-avoidance.

One reason for such inconsistent outcomes is a failure to develop a coherent and consistent theory of disability. Because disability has been and continues to be medicalized, this Article takes a fresh look at the medical literature on health, illness, and disability. It recommends the use of the experiential health model over …
