New Death Penalty Debate: What's Dna Got To Do With It, James S. Liebman Jan 2002

New Death Penalty Debate: What's Dna Got To Do With It, James S. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

The nation is engaged in the most intensive discussion of the death penalty in decades. Temporary moratoria on executions are effectively in place in Illinois and Maryland, and during the winter 2001 legislative cycle legislation to adopt those pauses elsewhere cleared committees or one or more houses of the legislature, not only in Connecticut (passed the Senate Judiciary Committee) and Maryland (where it passed the entire House, and the Senate Judiciary Committee) but in Nevada (passed the Senate) and Texas (passed committees in both Houses). In the last year, abolition bills have passed or come within a few votes of …

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson Jan 2002

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research suggests a relationship between cultural identity negotiation and the phenomenon of border crossing. While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of migration, few studies reflect a scope that includes in-depth analysis of the experiences of Afro-Caribbean women in the United States.Through ethnographic and autoethnographic methodologies, and using a feminist theoretical lens, this study explores issues relating to cultural identity negotiation in the lives of 10 Black women from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad, who now reside in the Midwest region of the United States. Analysis based on a grounded theory approach, allowed themes to emerge from …

Anticipatory Mourning In Caregivers With Children Who Die In The Hospital, Annie Rini Jan 2002

Anticipatory Mourning In Caregivers With Children Who Die In The Hospital, Annie Rini

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The death of a child has tremendous impact on a caregiver. Even when prognosis is poor and death appears imminent, care of the dying child typically focuses on achieving cure. Consequently, caregivers are often ill prepared to cope with the grief they experience as their child is dying. Anticipatory mourning allows caregivers time to begin grief work prior to the death of a loved one. Literature suggests that those who experience anticipatory mourning have a less complicated bereavement period. The purpose of this qualitative study is to (a) describe the presence (or absence) and role of anticipatory mourning in caregivers …

Feminist Issues And Concerns In The Fictions Of Two Egyptian Women Writers: Alifa Rifaat And Nawal El-Saadawi, Shafiqa Anwar Fakir Jan 2002

Feminist Issues And Concerns In The Fictions Of Two Egyptian Women Writers: Alifa Rifaat And Nawal El-Saadawi, Shafiqa Anwar Fakir

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis involves an examination of feminist issues and concerns in the fictions of two contemporary Egyptian women writers: Alifa Rifaat and Nawal el-Saadawi. The main focus will be on illuminating the social, sexual, economical problems that the literary female characters encounter and how they deal with these various forms of oppressions. Examination of these author's lives and works illustrates the complexity of women within the boundaries of the same nation in matters of gender justice and equality. This further, implicitly, illustrates the complexity of Arab women who tend to be viewed as a cohesive whole.

Dimensions Of Servant-Leadership In American Not-For-Profit Hospitals, William C. Mason

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The leadership of American not-for-profit hospitals is one context in which servant-leadership finds appropriate expression. However, little research exists that explores the sources of servant-leadership within the leader, what processes leaders use to engage in servantleadership, or what impact servant-leadership has on organizations and communities. This research presents a new perspective offering insight into those questions.

The Dimensions of Servant-Leadership in American Not-for-Profit Hospitals is a qualitative study of the lives and works of four chief executive officers of successful not-for-profit health systems identified as exemplars of servant-leadership. The researcher further examined perceptions of servant-leadership among colleagues of each of …

The Effects Of School Size And Gender On Adolescents’ Perception Of Stress, Dixie K. Nederhoff

I believed in the constitutional rights of the Fifth Amendment and the Sixth Amendment, due process of law, the right to the effective assistance of counsel, the right to trial including an advocate who was going to be your champion against a hostile world.

I believed in the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. I believed in the right to confront witnesses against you, the privilege against self-incrimination, equal protection …

E-Buyer Beware: Why Online Auction Fraud Should Be Regulated, Miriam R. Albert Jan 2002

E-Buyer Beware: Why Online Auction Fraud Should Be Regulated, Miriam R. Albert

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Part of a special issue on cyber law. The increasing use of the Internet as a medium of commerce has led to an increase in Internet fraud, raising new and challenging legal issues in areas including online auctions. Under current law, a defrauded participant in an online auction transaction has no recourse against the online auction site. However, the FTC should apply its substantial regulatory authority to the creation of binding regulations for online auction sites. Such regulations should include ideas such as authenticating participants' identities, limiting the number of user names per participant, verifying the creditworthiness of participants, offering …
