Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill Jan 2002

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill

Theses

This paper examines the dynamics involved in Christian community, paying particular attention to the pivotal role leadership plays in nurturing and sustaining the life of the community. It begins by analysing the human need for community if people are to fulfill their potential both individually and communally. Time is devoted to understanding Christian community from a Scriptural perspective and a caution is sounded not to envisage Christian community in purely mechanistic terms. The doctrine of the trinity of God is used as a lens to view vital characteristics in the life of a Christian community. The theology of leadership is …

Predicting Work Stress Burnout In Rural And Urban Emergency Medical Technicians Through The Use Of Early Recollections, Susan M. Vettor Jan 2002

Predicting Work Stress Burnout In Rural And Urban Emergency Medical Technicians Through The Use Of Early Recollections, Susan M. Vettor

Dissertations

Problem . Literature on work-stress burnout among emergency medical technicians (EMTs) suggests that they have maintained the same levels of burnout and attrition rates for the past 20 years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between early recollections and burnout in EMTs working in urban and rural locations.

Method . A demographic questionnaire, the Staff Burnout Scale for Health Professionals (SBS-HP), and two early recollections, were used to survey 120 emergency medical technicians in Toronto, Ontario and Mojave County, Arizona to assess their level of burnout and to identify various themes in early recollections.

Results . …

Contracting With Limited Commitment: Evidence From Employment-Based Health Insurance Contracts, Keith J. Crocker, John R. Moran Jan 2002

Contracting With Limited Commitment: Evidence From Employment-Based Health Insurance Contracts, Keith J. Crocker, John R. Moran

Center for Policy Research

When an individual's health status is observable, but evolving over time, the key to maintaining a successful health insurance arrangement is to have the healthier members of the group cross-subsidize those who experience adverse health outcomes. We argue that impediments to worker mobility may serve to mitigate the attrition of healthy individuals from employer-sponsored insurance pools, thereby creating a de facto commitment mechanism that allows for more complete insurance of health risks than would be possible in the absence of such frictions. Using data on health insurance contracts obtained from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey, we find that the …

Tanf Reauthorization: Is Congress Acting On What We Have Learned?, Peter B. Edelman Jan 2002

Tanf Reauthorization: Is Congress Acting On What We Have Learned?, Peter B. Edelman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

There is only one sure way to make something happen in public policy and in politics, and that is to organize. Sometimes external events-the Great Depression, World War II, Vietnam, Watergate, September 11th, Enron, and MCI WorldCom-will make things happen of their own accord. But we can't wait for events to create opportunity, and many such stimuli are in fact things we don't want to happen. So it is up to us. And the time for organizing is not just when an issue is at the forefront. Organizing is needed to build interest and support on issues over a longer …

Practicing "In The Interests Of Justice" In The Twenty-First Century: Pursuing Peace As Justice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 2002

Practicing "In The Interests Of Justice" In The Twenty-First Century: Pursuing Peace As Justice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In these comments I suggest that in our current world, both international and domestic, practicing "in the interests of justice" includes-indeed, should give great priority to-the "peace-seeking" and "problem solving" aspects of lawyering. I continue to see this as counter-cultural to the more common practices of lawyers who are argumentative, persuasive and articulate debaters, who believe fervently and vigorously that seeking justice, on behalf of a client or cause, means advocating for and "winning" a legal claim. To the contrary, seeking peace for parties (and, indeed, nation-states) in conflict, searching for consensus solutions to seemingly intractable public policy and legal …

This was a difficult project to undertake for a number of reasons. First of all, for various reasons it became expeditious to self-publish, and that is a bit of a nightmare. Second, there is little in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to which it may be compared. Thus, any doctrinal comparison to pre-existing teachings might be problematic in some places. Third, my biggest fear is that this work would be seen as an accusation or an indictment of the LC–MS. It is not intended as such.Any hyperbolic moments herein are not to point a finger of blame, but to call for …

The Inside Scoop: What Federal Judges Really Think About The Way Lawyers Write, Kristen Konrad Robbins-Tiscione Jan 2002

The Inside Scoop: What Federal Judges Really Think About The Way Lawyers Write, Kristen Konrad Robbins-Tiscione

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A recent survey indicates that what troubles federal judges most is not what lawyers say but what they fail to say when writing briefs. Although lawyers do a good job articulating legal issues and citing controlling, relevant legal authority, they are not doing enough with the law itself. Only fifty-six percent of the judges surveyed said that lawyers “always” or “usually” make their client’s best arguments. Fifty-eight percent of the judges rated the quality of the legal analysis as just “good,” as opposed to “excellent” or “very good.” The problem seems to be that briefs lack rigorous analysis, and the …

Justice Frank Murphy And American Labor Law, Theodore J. St. Antoine Jan 2002

Justice Frank Murphy And American Labor Law, Theodore J. St. Antoine

Articles

Working people and disfavored groups were central concerns of Frank Murphy, the last Michigan Law School graduate to sit on the United States Supreme Court. In the pages of this Review, just over a half century ago, Archibald Cox wrote of him: "It was natural ...th at his judicial work should be most significant in these two fields [labor law and civil rights] and especially in the areas where they coalesce."' In this Essay, after a brief overview of Murphy the man, his days at the University of Michigan, and his career prior to the Court appointment, I shall review …

The Invisible Patient (Reviewing Sally Satel, How Political Correctness Is Corrupting Medicine (2000)), Barbara A. Noah

Faculty Scholarship

Despite the fact that African-Americans suffer from a variety of health problems at disproportionately higher rates than whites, inequities in the medical system make access to care more difficult for minorities. The problem of racial disparities in health care encompasses more than problems of access or payment, however. Communication difficulties between physician and patient and disparate provision of services covered by insurance also may contribute substantially to health disparities between the races. This review canvasses some of the evidence of differential medical treatment and offers some suggestions that may improve the quality of communication between physicians and patients. In addition …

Internet -Based Education In Egypt: A Pilot Project To Assess Public Health Capacity And The Potential For Distance Education Using A Randomized Controlled Comparison Of An Internet-Based Distance Education Course And A Traditional Face-To-Face Course, Rebecca Ann Noel Jan 2002

Internet -Based Education In Egypt: A Pilot Project To Assess Public Health Capacity And The Potential For Distance Education Using A Randomized Controlled Comparison Of An Internet-Based Distance Education Course And A Traditional Face-To-Face Course, Rebecca Ann Noel

All ETDs from UAB

To develop a well-trained global work force, public health workers must take advantage of new opportunities to provide public health training and education. Distance education delivered via the Internet holds particular promise, especially for public health workers in developing countries. Because of the need to travel to the United States, Europe, or elsewhere, public health workers in developing countries have limited access to traditional public health training and education. Even short-courses are not cost-effective or efficient in terms of time and travel. If public health distance education delivered via the Internet could be shown to be equivalent to traditional public …

An Evaluation Study On Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers In Accra, Ghana, Esi Komeley Colecraft Jan 2002

An Evaluation Study On Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers In Accra, Ghana, Esi Komeley Colecraft

All ETDs from UAB

The primary goals of nutrition rehabilitation centers (NRCs) are to recuperate malnourished children and improve caretakers' child feeding practices. Children ( N = 116) and caretakers ( N = 108) newly enrolled in four NRCs in Accra, Ghana were recruited and studied longitudinally at four time points: admission, interim, exit and postexit . Data collection included observations of activities at the NRCs, anthropometry, interviews, dietary assessments, and weighing of NRC foods. Caretaker/child pairs attended the NRCs 33% ± 21% of their total stay, and the majority (78%) discontinued participation before being officially discharged. At exit , ≥60% of children had …

Seasonality Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Donna Garland Robbins Jan 2002

Seasonality Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Donna Garland Robbins

All ETDs from UAB

Generalizability of possible seasonality of cardiovascular disease risk factors has not been demonstrated, and, if present, biologic mechanisms remain uncertain. This was addressed by examining cross-sectional seasonal variation in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) subjects, and cross-sectional and longitudinal seasonal variation in and interrelationships between lipids and thyroid hormone levels in a Lipid Variation Influence of Stress (LVIS) study subsample. Although crude analyses identified some significant seasonal variation in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, physical activity, maximum heart rate, caloric intake, triglycerides, body weight and blood pressure overall and/or among race/gender strata …

High -Risk Sexual Behavior And Condom Use Among Textile Workers In Tamil Nadu, India, Sushena Reza-Paul Jan 2002

High -Risk Sexual Behavior And Condom Use Among Textile Workers In Tamil Nadu, India, Sushena Reza-Paul

All ETDs from UAB

Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a rapidly growing problem in India, with a 2002 estimate of over four million infected persons. The magnitude of the epidemic varies widely among the different Indian states but is predominantly from heterosexual transmission nationwide. In Tamil Nadu, the infection rates among the general population are now above 1%. Most prevention and control activities are restricted to mass information, education, and communication and targeted programs for the highest risk groups. With an increasingly generalized HIV epidemic, the need to respond to the HIV risk faced by lower risk populations assumes more importance. …

Prenatal Exposure To Toxic Substances And The Risk Of Congenital Malformations In Florida, Alan D. Rowan Jan 2002

Prenatal Exposure To Toxic Substances And The Risk Of Congenital Malformations In Florida, Alan D. Rowan

All ETDs from UAB

A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess the association between congenital malformations and proximity to hazardous waste sites in Florida. All children whose mother lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation during the years 1996–1998 were in the study. Cases were children with birth defects whose mothers lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation. Controls were children whose mothers also lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation but did not have birth defects. The proximity of residence during gestation was not associated with the development of birth …

Maternal And Child Health Services Utilization By Hispanics In Alabama, Fausto Guillermo Patino Jan 2002

Maternal And Child Health Services Utilization By Hispanics In Alabama, Fausto Guillermo Patino

All ETDs from UAB

The Hispanic population in Alabama has rapidly increased in recent years, raising public health officials' concern about their health status and use of health care services. This study examined health services' utilization by first-generation Hispanic mothers and children in greater Birmingham. Constructs from the Health Belief Model and the Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization were integrated to form the study's theoretical framework. The cross-sectional study included a questionnaire orally administered to 227 Hispanic mothers recruited via location and snowball sampling; questions focused on mothers and their youngest child between the ages of 6 months and 5 years (an index …

Coupling Of C-Src To Large Conductance Voltage-And Ca2+-Activated K+ Channels As A New Mechanism Of Agonist-Induced Vasoconstriction, A. Alioua, Aman Mahajan, Kazuhide Nishimaru, Masoud M. Zarei, Enrico Stefani, Ligia Toro Jan 2002

Coupling Of C-Src To Large Conductance Voltage-And Ca2+-Activated K+ Channels As A New Mechanism Of Agonist-Induced Vasoconstriction, A. Alioua, Aman Mahajan, Kazuhide Nishimaru, Masoud M. Zarei, Enrico Stefani, Ligia Toro

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The voltage-dependent and Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channel (MaxiK, BK) and the cellular proto-oncogene pp60(c-Src) (c-Src) are abundant proteins in vascular smooth muscle. The role of MaxiK channels as a vasorelaxing force is well established, but their role in vasoconstriction is unclear. Because Src participates in regulating vasoconstriction, we investigated whether c-Src inhibits MaxiK as a mechanism for agonist-induced vasoconstriction. Functional experiments in human and rat show that inhibitors of Src (Lavendustin A, PP2) but not inactive compounds (Lavendustin B, PP3) induce a pronounced relaxation of coronary or aortic smooth muscle precontracted with 5-hydroxytriptamine, phenylephrine, or Angiotensin II. Iberiotoxin, a MaxiK blocker, …

It's All Relative: A Study On The Acceptance Of Family Employment In College Athletics, Jennifer E. Cirillo Jan 2002

It's All Relative: A Study On The Acceptance Of Family Employment In College Athletics, Jennifer E. Cirillo

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Nepotism is a dirty little word: Related individuals work together in entertainment, medicine, education and yes, even sports administration. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. "Nepotism" is an arguably accurate descriptor of arrangements of relatives working together. However, the potential for real as well as asserted preferential treatment is shown to exist. Further, as the trend of couples working in the same discipline grows, whether or not a candidate accepts a position may be determined by the potential manager's acceptance …
