Alcohol Use And Perceptions Of Alcohol Use Among Biology, Criminal Justice, Health Science, And Psychology Capstone Students At Grand Valley State University, Rebecca Postma

Masters Theses

This study brought the widely used Rutgers PRSP survey to upper level students in biology, criminal justice, health science and psychology capstone classes in the academic year of 2000/2001. The survey explores student perceptions of their own alcohol use, of their friends’ use, and that of other students. Data from 291 participants reveals gender differences in perception, differences in self-reported drinking habits among the four capstone groups, and differences between this group of participants and their expectations of other students’ drinking. These areas of information along with other interesting findings give important insight into the upper level students of Grand …

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements Of Target/Blanket Materials, Carter D. Hull, William H. Johnson

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

To begin developing the database necessary for the validation and benchmarking of the LAHET component of the MCNPX code suite, the UNLV research program has set forth the following objectives. First, the current MCNPX suite will be used to develop models of multi-element neutron detector systems. These models of the detector systems will be incorporated into the design of detailed models for the entire detector-target system. These models will first be used to help design the irradiation experiments, and then will be used to model the behavior of the system. Irradiation experiments corresponding to the detector-target system models will be …

Development Of Dose Conversion Coefficients For Radionuclides Produced In Spallation Neutron Sources, Phillip W. Patton, Mark Rudin

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

For the first year of this effort, the UNLV research team set out four objectives. First, the university and laboratory consortium had to be established. This consortium was tasked with helping to determine the methodology for determining the dose coefficients, and to ensure that the resulting DCs will be of use to the national programs developing accelerator-driven nuclear systems (such as the SNS or an accelerator-driven transmutation system) and to the health physics community as a whole. The second goal of this program was to determine a methodology and then prioritize the radionuclides so that the research effort would address …

From Sin To Sickness: A Sociological History Of The Problem Gambler, Bo Jason Bernhard Jan 2002

From Sin To Sickness: A Sociological History Of The Problem Gambler, Bo Jason Bernhard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Long before medical and psychological experts determined that problem gambling qualified as a mental illness, moral experts determined that this problem could be "diagnosed" as a sin. This research examines pre-1915 gambling literature to determine the ways in which people who gambled too much were identified, named, and "treated" socially. Interestingly, virtually all of our current diagnostic criteria were identified by moral thinkers hundreds of years ago. Implications for the sociological history of problem gambling, the sociology of mental illness, and the sociology of religion and morality are discussed.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is an inherited neuropsychological disorder affecting 3% to 5% of the school-aged population of the United States and having no identified single cause. The primary treatment recommended for those suffering from attentional deficits is multimodal, which includes psychostimulant medication in the form of methylphenidate (Ritalin) and behavioral/educational interventions. However, there is a subset of sufferers who, though taking psychostimulant medications and undergoing behavioral and educational interventions, continue to suffer the symptoms of attentional deficits: distractibility, impulsiveness and aggressive behavior; Those affected by acquired brain injuries as the result of some external trauma or neurological disorder suffer …

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper Jan 2002

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Notostraca) were reared under normoxic (19--21 kPa O2), moderate (10--13 kPa O2) or severe (1--3 kPa O2) hypoxic conditions to investigate the effects of developmental Po2 (partial pressure of oxygen) on adult metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. Growth rates were independent of developmental Po2, although adult body size was significantly smaller in tadpole shrimp reared under severe hypoxic conditions relative to those reared under normoxic conditions. Most organisms increase respiratory surface area in response to hypoxic exposure. Yet growth of the epipodites (proposed respiratory structure) relative to mass (Y = aMb) was significantly reduced …

An Analysis Of First Amendment Jurisprudence And School Voucher Programs After Zelman V Simmons -Harris (2002), Lori A Stengel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association, Thomas Jefferson stated the need for a "wall of separation between Church & State." The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment maintained that metaphoric wall of separation; however, the magnitude of separation has varied over the course of time. The Supreme Court's holding in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (2002) ushers in a new era of Establishment Clause interpretation; In Zelman, the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Program faced an Establishment Clause challenge. An analysis of the Cleveland program illustrated that in the 1999--2000 school year, 82% of the participating private schools were religious in …
