Circulatory Adjuncts: Newer Methods Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Current standard CPR only provides about one fifth of normal forward blood flow and only about one quarter of the blood flow that is theoretically possible with advanced external techniques. Two such techniques are now approved as optional alternatives in resuscitation guidelines. This chapter reviews modern understanding of the physiology of blood flow during CPR and practical aspects of utilizing more advanced resuscitation methods. When properly performed these methods produce statistically significant increases in survival.

A Swat/Microbial Sub-Model For Predicting Pathogen Loadings In Surface And Groundwater At Watershed And Basin Scales, Ali M. Sadeghi, Jeffrey G. Arnold Jan 2002

A Swat/Microbial Sub-Model For Predicting Pathogen Loadings In Surface And Groundwater At Watershed And Basin Scales, Ali M. Sadeghi, Jeffrey G. Arnold

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Despite the many potential sources of release of pathogenic organisms into the environment, agronomic practices that utilize animal manures contaminated with pathogenic or parasitic organisms appear to be the major contributors to watershed or basin contaminations. High rates of land-applied raw manure increase the risks of surface or ground water contamination, both from excess nutrients and pathogenic organisms. Unfortunately, current technologies are not adequate for handling large-scale treatment processes (e.g., composting, digestion, etc.) for stabilizing human pathogens in animal manures before application to agricultural lands. Therefore, there is a need for modeling capabilities to assess risks associated with individual and …

Washington State's Return To Indeterminate Sentencing For Sex Offenses: Correcting Past Sentencing Mistakes And Preventing Future Harm, Jennifer M. Mckinney Jan 2002

Washington State's Return To Indeterminate Sentencing For Sex Offenses: Correcting Past Sentencing Mistakes And Preventing Future Harm, Jennifer M. Mckinney

Seattle University Law Review

The Washington legislature's return to indeterminate sentencing corrects its original mistake of setting fixed sentences for sex offenders with no supervision after release. Unlike the present civil commitment system, indeterminate sentencing preventatively detains offenders in the criminal system, protects the public, and ensures more control over offenders following their prison terms. Indeterminate sentencing provides a more efficient and effective alternative to the civil commitment process. Section II will briefly discuss the progression of sex offender sentencing from the original parole system to the present changes, and why past structures were instituted and later modified or repealed. Furthermore, Section II will …

Development Of China’S Legal System Will Strengthen Its Mediation Programs, Deborah Chow Jan 2002

Development Of China’S Legal System Will Strengthen Its Mediation Programs, Deborah Chow

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

China’s mediation system would improve in overall fairness and effectiveness, if it developed a more just and predictable legal system. This system should be one in which its citizens and foreign businesses could confidently pursue enforcement of their rights under various Chinese laws, international norms, and international treaties. This paper will examine: (1) the roots of China’s mediation program, including discussions about the strong Confucian, Maoist, and legal influences; (2) China’s modern mediation systems; (3) weaknesses of the current mediation system; (4) the benefits for mediation through the development of China’s legal system; and (5) possible methods to aid the …

Growing Rice Grain With Controlled Cadmium Concentrations, Urszula Kukier, Rufus L. Chaney

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two solution studies were conducted a) to investigate the uptake of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) by rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) and interaction between these elements, and b) to determine experimental conditions for growing rice grain with desired Cd concentration for an animal feeding study. In both studies, free metal activities of cadmium and cationic microelements were buffered by an excess of chelating agents. The first study was a factorial design with two Zn levels (1.0 and 3.89 μM) and four Cd levels (0.81, 1.44, 2.56 and 4.55 μM) in the solution. In the second study, rice was …

Phenotypic Traits As Reliable Indicators Of Fertility In Male Broiler Breeders, S. Mcgary, I. Estevez, M. R. Bakst, D. L. Pollock Jan 2002

Phenotypic Traits As Reliable Indicators Of Fertility In Male Broiler Breeders, S. Mcgary, I. Estevez, M. R. Bakst, D. L. Pollock

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Genetic selection procedures applied to improve broiler performance may negatively impact the subsequent reproductive efficiency of breeders, particularly in males. Identification of traits that reliably indicate individual male fertility would facilitate selection for reproduction. We hypothesized that physical traits, such as comb area, relative testicular weight, and testicular weight asymmetry, may correlate with fertility in two male-selected primary broiler breeder strains (A and B). Thirty males per strain, individually housed with an average of 10 females, were evaluated at five age periods within the 30-to-50-wk breeding cycle. Flock fertility by candling eggs at Day 19 of incubation and sample fertility …

Threat Of Foreign Arthropod-Borne Pathogens To Livestock In The United States, Ralph A. Bram, John E. George, Robert E. Reichard, Walter J. Tabachnick Jan 2002

Threat Of Foreign Arthropod-Borne Pathogens To Livestock In The United States, Ralph A. Bram, John E. George, Robert E. Reichard, Walter J. Tabachnick

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There are many exotic animal pathogens throughout the world that, if introduced into the United States, could have a significant detrimental impact on the health of livestock, agricultural economy, the environment, and public health. Many of these pathogens are arthropod-borne and potential vectors are readily available in the United States. A number of these arthropod-borne pathogens are discussed here as examples that illustrate the potential risk and the consequences of inadvertent introductions. Several International agencies have a role in global surveillance and in controlling animal diseases should they begin to expand their range. The risk to the United States is …

Arsenic(Iii) Oxidation And Arsenic(V) Adsorption Reactions On Synthetic Birnessite, Bruce A. Manning, Scott E. Fendorf, Benjamin Bostick, Donald L. Suarez Jan 2002

Arsenic(Iii) Oxidation And Arsenic(V) Adsorption Reactions On Synthetic Birnessite, Bruce A. Manning, Scott E. Fendorf, Benjamin Bostick, Donald L. Suarez

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The oxidation of arsenite (As(III)) by manganese oxide is an important reaction in both the natural cycling of As and the development of remediation technology for lowering the concentration of dissolved As(III) in drinking water. This study used both a conventional stirred reaction apparatus and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to investigate the reactions of As(III) and As(V) with synthetic birnessite (MnO2). Stirred reactor experiments indicate that As(III) is oxidized by MnO2 followed by the adsorption of the As(V) reaction product on the MnO2 solid phase. The As(V)-Mn interatomic distance determined by EXAFS analysis …

Differences Among Mycorrhizal Fungi For Mineral Uptake Per Root Length Of Switchgrass Grown In Acidic Soil, R. B. Clark Jan 2002

Differences Among Mycorrhizal Fungi For Mineral Uptake Per Root Length Of Switchgrass Grown In Acidic Soil, R. B. Clark

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Plants commonly encounter deficient and=or toxic levels of mineral elements when grown in acidic soil, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have potential to overcome many of these effects. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) was grown in acidic Lily soil (Typic Hapludult) at pHCa 4 and 5 (soil : 10mM CaCl2, 1 : 1) and inoculated with Glomus (G.) clarum, G. diaphanum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, Gigaspora (Gi.) albida, Gi. margarita, Gi. rosea, and Acaulospora (A.) morrowiae to determine differences among mycorrhizal (AM) plants for mineral uptake per root length (RL). Shoots of AM plants grown …

Updating Procedures To Estimate And Forecast Vehicle-Miles Traveled, Jon D. Fricker, Raymond K. Kumapley Jan 2002

Updating Procedures To Estimate And Forecast Vehicle-Miles Traveled, Jon D. Fricker, Raymond K. Kumapley

JTRP Technical Reports

Procedures developed for the estimation of Vehicle-Miles of Travel (VMT) have been fraught with problems of inaccuracy. Emphasis on environmental issues (air quality), as mandated by current regulations (CAAA, ISTEA-91, and TEA 21), requires State DOTs to accurately estimate travel on their highway infrastructure. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed, and subsequently modified, the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) to assist in data collection and reporting. INDOT currently estimates VMT by a method that closely follows the HPMS method. Roads that are not on the state highway system (minor collectors, urban collectors and local) are not represented in the …

Other data including gender and migrant status were obtained from …

Using Commercial Finite Element Code Called Abaqus In Modeling Hybrid Constrained Layers Damping Beam Structure And Quantitative Determination Of The Stability Of Implant-Bone Interface Using Resonance Frequency Analysis, Daniel Delgado Jr. Jan 2002

Using Commercial Finite Element Code Called Abaqus In Modeling Hybrid Constrained Layers Damping Beam Structure And Quantitative Determination Of The Stability Of Implant-Bone Interface Using Resonance Frequency Analysis, Daniel Delgado Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In Chapter 1, it has been demonstrated that the damping treatments for beam and plate structures are effective, and the vibrational behaviors of the systems considered are influenced by many geometrical and material parameters. This has led to an interest in developing advanced “intelligent” structures. In the past, passive and active damping mechanisms have been used to reduce vibration. The uses of passive constrained layers are limited, but it has dissipative qualities for all the modes of the structure; and the uses of active constrained layers are limited to a single mode control. Recent published papers, many have suggested that …

Lawyers, Non-Lawyers And Mediation: Rethinking The Professional Monopoly From A Problem-Solving Perspective , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley Jan 2002

Lawyers, Non-Lawyers And Mediation: Rethinking The Professional Monopoly From A Problem-Solving Perspective , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley

Faculty Scholarship

Mediation is a big business today that is practiced by lawyers and non-lawyers, and is closely related to the business of law. Lawyers have a long-standing monopoly on the law business and do not look favorably on sharing their power with nonlawyers. This phenomenon is odd because it occurs at the same time that the legal profession is beginning to embrace a new ethic of problem-solving that honors the values of collaboration and power-sharing among professionals in multiple disciplines. Lawyers protect their professional monopoly through the unauthorized practice of law ("UPL") doctrine that limits the practice of law to licensed …

Privacy Wrongs In Search Of Remedies, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 2002

Privacy Wrongs In Search Of Remedies, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

The American legal system has generally rejected legal rights for data privacy and relies instead on market self-regulation and the litigation process to establish norms of appropriate behavior in society. Information privacy is protected only through an amalgam of narrowly targeted rules. The aggregation of these specific rights leaves many significant gaps and fewer clear remedies for violations of fair information practices. With an absence of well-established legal rights, privacy wrongs are currently in search of remedies. This Article first describes privacy rights and wrongs that frame the search for remedies in the United States. It explores public enforcement of, …
