The Use Of Electronic Technologies In The Cedar Rapids Community Schools' Physical Education Programs, Nicholaus J. Daniel Jan 2002

The Use Of Electronic Technologies In The Cedar Rapids Community Schools' Physical Education Programs, Nicholaus J. Daniel

Graduate Research Papers

How often is electronic technology used in physical education programs? How much electronic technology is available to physical education programs? Does electronic technology and physical education go together? When most people think of electronic technology, they do not think about physical education. Most people tend to think that technology is anything related to a desktop or laptop computer, something you sit down at and work on, not something that involves being physical.

From the researcher's experience in the Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD), there is some pressure for all subject areas to implement and integrate electronic technologies into the …

Improving After-School Programs : A Literature Review, Harriet A. Davis

Graduate Research Papers

The desire and need for after-school programs in the United States is steadily increasing especially for low- to moderate-income children and adolescents. Studies show after-school program participants watch less television and spend more time in academic activities and enrichment lessons (Posner and Vandell 1994). As a result, these programs are extremely beneficial to children who participate in them. After-school programs also provide a safe haven for countless children who need adult supervision at the end of the regular school day.

The following analysis is a compilation of information derived from scholarly journals, books, organizations participating in after-school programs, Internet sources, …

Preventing Childhood Depression By Building Resiliency In Children, Sarah Carroll Jan 2002

Preventing Childhood Depression By Building Resiliency In Children, Sarah Carroll

Graduate Research Papers

This review of literature is a report of the success of programs designed to prevent childhood depression by building resiliency. Research results indicate that prevention programs focused on teaching children and parents coping skills, changing negative thought patterns, social problem solving, teaching the symptoms of childhood depression and how to discuss it with children, and fostering resiliency have reduced the incidence of depression in children (Comer, 1985; Gladstone & Beardslee, 2000; Seligman, 1995).

Additional research needs to address the following questions: a) How does building resilience differ for children from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds? b) . What are the …

When The Wildebeest Gets Your Berries : Adolescent Anger Management, Patresa A. Hartman Jan 2002

When The Wildebeest Gets Your Berries : Adolescent Anger Management, Patresa A. Hartman

Graduate Research Papers

This study presents a review of literature regarding adolescent anger management. Problematic anger is defined as externalizing or internalizing behaviors that occur frequently enough and at a high enough level of intensity to: (1) disrupt one's everyday functioning at school, home, and/or in the community; and (2) impair one's relationships with others and one's own self-concept. The causes can be traced to a myriad of possible sources: cognitive problems; developmental problems; chronic irritability, agitation, volatility, or mood instability; or environmental stressors.

This review of studies regarding adolescent anger management programs leads to the following suggestions for school psychologists: (1) understand …

Evaluation Of The Change On Water Vapor Transmission Rate Of Different Polypropylene Films In Contact With D-Limoneme And The Effect Such Changes Have On The Shelf Life Of Confectionary Products., Anna Romero

Theses

This paper discusses the changes observed in Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) of three plastic films while exposed to different concentrations of d-limoneme. The concentration of d-limoneme on the films was determined by means of Headspace Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The Water Vapor Transmission rate of all films was determined by means of a MOCON-Water Vapor Permeation Analysis System Permatran-W 3/31. It was observed that d-limoneme affected the films in two ways: at lower concentrations, the WVTR decreased but, after certain concentration was reached, the WVTR increased. These results explain the shortened shelf-life of candies containing d-limoneme which are …

In Search Of A Balance Between Police Power And Privacy In The Cybercrime Treaty, D.C. Kennedy

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Imagine that you wake up one morning, turn on your computer, and open an e-mail message with a catchy phrase in the subject line. Immediately after opening the e-mail’s attachment, your personal computer is severely damaged. Obviously having a bad day, you head to your job as an attorney for a multinational corporation. By the time you arrive at work, there has been damage to company computers across the globe. The monetary costs of the damage, coupled with the downtime, are astronomical. The CEO of your company is furious. You hope to diffuse the situation by informing your boss that …

Treating Persons As Ends In Themselves: The Legal Implications Of A Kantian Principle, R. George Wright Jan 2002

Treating Persons As Ends In Themselves: The Legal Implications Of A Kantian Principle, R. George Wright

University of Richmond Law Review

In one of the most stirring passages in modern ethics, Immanuel Kant famously enjoins: "act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means." Precisely what Kant means here, however, is not entirely clear. More than one interpretation of this formula is possible. But the importance of Kant's "formula of ends" in modern moral philosophy is impossi- ble to deny.

Cyberian Signals, Steven A. Hetcher Jan 2002

Cyberian Signals, Steven A. Hetcher

University of Richmond Law Review

In Law and Social Norms, Eric Posner offers an original and important theory of the emergence of norms. According to Posner, norms are collections of signals. He develops his signaling account in a variety of contexts, including criminal law, family law, political participation, and racial discrimination. This article extends Posner's theory to cyberspace, a domain of social organization not touched on in Posner's book. In particular, I will test Posner's theory by examining how well it explains the emergence of Web site privacy norms. Part One will examine signaling theory. Part Two will explore privacy norms in some detail, and …

The Strategic Alternative: How State Takings Statutes May Resolve The Unanswered Questions Of Palazzolo, Michael A. Culpepper Jan 2002

The Strategic Alternative: How State Takings Statutes May Resolve The Unanswered Questions Of Palazzolo, Michael A. Culpepper

University of Richmond Law Review

In a world of "Hobbesian stick[s]" and "Lockean bundle[s]," analytical confusion should be expected. Indeed, critics describe the world of federal takings jurisprudence as "an unworkable muddle," as "a jumble of confusing holdings," and as a body of law existing in "doctrinal and conceptual disarray." Since the United States Supreme Court first considered the regulatory takings issue in Mugler v. Kansas, the Court's inconsistent application of the doctrine has largely conformed to criticism. Governed by abstruse metaphors' and ad hoc analysis, the Court acknowledges its imprecision 9 and often relies upon it.

Examining The Cost-Outcome Relationship Of A Fortified Class-Size Reduction Program, Derick M. Kiger Jan 2002

Examining The Cost-Outcome Relationship Of A Fortified Class-Size Reduction Program, Derick M. Kiger

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Class-size reduction initiatives have been criticized for producing modest achievement gains for the resources they consume. Wisconsin’s Student Achievement Guarantee in Education (SAGE) was designed to amplify the achievement benefits of smaller classes by requiring complementary changes in the teaching and learning environment and accountability for results. This study examined SAGE in an urban school district. The achievement benefits realized by the evaluand were marginalized by high per-student costs and similar performance of comparison groups on a state-mandated reading test. Suggestions for improving the cost-outcome relationship were presented.

Circulatory Adjuncts: Newer Methods Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2002

Circulatory Adjuncts: Newer Methods Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Current standard CPR only provides about one fifth of normal forward blood flow and only about one quarter of the blood flow that is theoretically possible with advanced external techniques. Two such techniques are now approved as optional alternatives in resuscitation guidelines. This chapter reviews modern understanding of the physiology of blood flow during CPR and practical aspects of utilizing more advanced resuscitation methods. When properly performed these methods produce statistically significant increases in survival.
