The Influence Of Demographic Factors On The Experience Of House Arrest, Brian K. Payne, Randy R. Gainey Jan 2002

The Influence Of Demographic Factors On The Experience Of House Arrest, Brian K. Payne, Randy R. Gainey

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

A great deal of research has focused on how various groups perceive and experience incarceration. Research into this area is justified on the grounds that understanding will yield information about appropriate strategies to effectively and efficiently supervise, protect, and treat incarcerated offenders. Groups whose incarceration experiences have been considered by criminologists include female prisoners (Enos, 2001; Kruttschnitt, Gartner, & Miller, 2000; Loucks & Zamble, 2000), older prisoners (Edwards, 1998; Fry & Frese, 1992; King & Bass, 2000), and minority prisoners (Frazier, 1995; Wright, 1989). Researchers have also considered the influence that length of sentence has on the incarceration experience. Together, …

The Efficacy Of A Media Literacy Program For The Prevention And Treatment Of Eating Disturbances: Implications For The Continuum Model Of Eating Disorders., Janelle Wilder Coughlin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the current study was to determine whether a two-session media literacy program, A.R.M.E.D. (Acknowledging and Rejecting the Media's Influence on Eating and Body Image Disturbances), was an effective intervention for individuals who fell at various points on the eating disorder continuum. Ninety-three female college students participated in the study, with 46 experimental participants attending A.R.M.E.D and 47 participants serving as a control group. Between-subjects analyses did not reveal differences between the experimental and control group on each of the seven dependent variables. Within-subjects repeated measures analyses did, however, reveal that women who attended A.R.M.E.D. significantly reduced their …

A Comparison Of Psychologists Who Engage In Nonsexual And Sexual Dual Relationships With Psychologists Who Do Not., Debra Kristine Ehlert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine and understand potential differences between psychologists who have engaged in a nonsexual and sexual dual relationship and psychologists who have not. Psychologists from across the United States (N = 59) completed questionnaires concerning object relations, parentification, narcissistic injury, self-esteem, and ethical judgment. Measures included a demographic questionnaire, the Bell Object Relations Inventory (BORI) with four subscales of alienation, insecure attachment, egocentricity, and social incompetence), the Parentification Questionnaire (PQ), the Narcissistic Injury Scale (NIS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Ethical Judgment Scale (EJS), and four open-ended questions regarding the experience of being …

The Effects Of A One-Week Training Course On Preservice Pete Students' Knowledge Of Critical Elements, Error Detection Skill And Feedback Precision., Michael Allen Graves Jan 2002

The Effects Of A One-Week Training Course On Preservice Pete Students' Knowledge Of Critical Elements, Error Detection Skill And Feedback Precision., Michael Allen Graves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of pedagogical skills such as critical element knowledge, error detection skill, and feedback precision are deemed necessary by researchers in creating effective teachers. However, most studies have examined these skills independently rather than studying them as a process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 1-week intervention program on the feedback giving process. Specifically, the study examined (1) PETE students knowledge of critical elements, (2) the ability to detect errors from a video performance, and (3) the precision of feedback following such an observation on 12 movement skills. Seeing whether the feedback process …

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi Jan 2002

The Urotsa Cell Line As A Model Of Human Urothelium., Michael Ronald Rossi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The UROtsa cell line is a unique model of human urothelium with considerable utility in toxicology-based research. UROtsa cells maintained in serum-free medium have several morphological features of transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder including a multilayered appearance and apically located umbrella-like cells that exhibit tight junctions. These cells also have a basal expression pattern of heat shock protein (hsp) and metallothionein (MT) genes similar to that observed in in situ urothelium. To characterize the functional heat shock and metallothionein stress response in UROtsa cells, confluent cultures grown in serum-free medium were treated with a variety of acute and chronic …

The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter Jan 2002

The Effects Of Age On The Chromosomal And Physiological Integrity Of Human Sperm., Eddie D. Sloter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Integrated biomarkers of physiologic and genetic damage in sperm are needed to identify factors that affect male fertility and influence a father's risk of producing abnormal progeny. Offspring studies show a preferential paternal origin for heritable structural chromosomal abnormalities, presenting the need for methods to efficiently detect structural chromosomal abnormalities in human sperm. This dissertation breaks new conceptual ground toward the understanding of paternally transmitted genetic disease by adapting FISH technology to detect human sperm that carry chromosomal breaks and partial chromosomal duplications and deletions and by integrating state-of-the-art biomarkers of semen quality including computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). These sperm …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Task

In 1994, the central Africa nation of Rwanda experienced a large-scale genocide in which thousands of people were killed. Many Christians including Adventists participated in these mass killings. It is the task of this study to investigate (1) the historical causes of the genocide, (2) why Seventh-day Adventist Christians participated in the genocide, and (3) propose strategies for forgiveness and reconciliation from an Adventist perspective.

Methodology

The study is an historical and analytical investigation of the country and people of Rwanda from precolonial to post-independence time. It draws on the personal experience and direct interviews of …

A Historically And Culturally Contextualized Proposal For Health Evangelism In Latvia, Anna Galeniece Jan 2002

A Historically And Culturally Contextualized Proposal For Health Evangelism In Latvia, Anna Galeniece

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Seventh-day Adventist church leaders in Latvia have used several approaches and methods for reaching people with the gospel, but proclamation evangelism has served as the main program. However, this method has lost its effectiveness since the middle-1990s. Therefore, today the necessity of discovering and developing new ways and strategies has become crucial. One approach to reach the Latvian population could be health evangelism, which has achieved immense success in many parts of the world since the beginning of the Adventist health message in the 1860s.

Method

The research utilized pertinent materials from books, periodicals, and the Internet. The purpose …

Gore Wars, Alex Kozinski Jan 2002

Gore Wars, Alex Kozinski

Michigan Law Review

Unless you've been frozen in carbonite or are hopelessly gullible, it must have occurred to you at some point during the last three decades that environmental activists are exaggerating just a bit when they claim that, unless we dramatically change our way of life, we'll soon see the end of civilization as we know it. I'm not sure when these doomsday predictions got started - probably they go back to Malthus and beyond - but I first became aware of environmental Jeremiadism in college in the early 1970s, when tout-le-monde were reading a little book called The Limits to Growth. …

Toward A Jurisprudence Of Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz Jan 2002

Toward A Jurisprudence Of Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz

Michigan Law Review

In 1989, Cass Sunstein published an article entitled On the Costs and Benefits of Aggressive Judicial Review of Agency Action. Sunstein apparently meant the words "costs" and "benefits" in an informal sense, as the article considered the advantages and disadvantages of aggressive judicial review without pretense of explicit quantification. That article was several generations ago in Sunstein scholarship, almost 100 articles and over a dozen books. The central concerns of that article, however, are relevant to an assessment of Sunstein's latest book, whose title, The Cost-Benefit State, uses the words "costs" and "benefits" as labels for quantitative assessments of the …

The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Locus Of Control., Andrea Marie Nardello Jan 2002

The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Locus Of Control., Andrea Marie Nardello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study used the newly developed Interpersonal-Goal Locus of Control scale (IGLOC) and the Revised Family Communication Patterns (RFCP) scale to investigate the relationship between people’s family communication growing up with their sense of locus of control later in life. It was hypothesized that family communication patterns would be related to the subscales of the IGLOC. College undergraduates (N=215) were given a survey which measured their locus of control and family communication patterns. Results of a Pearson Correlation show conversation-orientation to be positively related to internal, structural, other-owned, and negatively related to normative and phenomenal locus of control. Conformity-orientation was …

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade Jan 2002

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eight rats were exposed to a concurrent-chains procedure. Half of the rats chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required low rates of responding in the paced terminal link and a simple fixed-interval schedule in the unpaced terminal link. The other half chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required high rates of responding and a simple fixed-interval schedule. Interresponse-time criteria were based on the percentiles of a baseline distribution of interresponse times obtained for each rat. The criteria increased in stringency across conditions. Consistent changes in response rates as the result of the interresponse-time criteria were not obtained. Therefore, preference between …

Those Who Remember The Past May Not Be Condemned To Repeat It, Stephan Landsman

Michigan Law Review

In The Hague, Slobodan Milosevic is on trial for crimes committed in Bosnia, Kosovo and Croatia; in Arusha, Tanzania, Jean Paul Akayasu, a Rwandan bourgmestre, was convicted of genocide; in London, Augusto Pinochet was detained and adjudged amenable to an arrest warrant issued by a Spanish magistrate for acts of torture carried out in Chile; in Belgium, a Hutu Roman Catholic former mother superior was convicted of complicity in the Rwandan genocide; and in Rome a treaty was signed commencing the process that will result in the creation of the International Criminal Court ("ICC"). All these events underscore the startling …

Eating Disorders In The Oral Health Curriculum, Rita D. Debate, Deanne Shuman, Lisa A. Tedesco Jan 2002

Eating Disorders In The Oral Health Curriculum, Rita D. Debate, Deanne Shuman, Lisa A. Tedesco

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Due to the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders, this serious health issue requires comprehensive patient assessment and coordinated health treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess the breadth and depth of eating disorder and comprehensive care within the dental and dental hygiene curriculum. Survey data were collected from deans of U.S. dental programs (n=24) and dental hygiene program directors (n=94). Statistically significant differences were observed between dental programs (DP) and dental hygiene programs (DHP) as more DHP reported including anorexia nervosa (p<.001), bulimia nervosa (p<.001), and oral manifestations of eating disorders (p=.003) within their curricula. Clock hours dedicated to these topics ranged from seventeen to thirty-five minutes, with no statistically significant differences observed between DP and DHP. Only 58 percent of DP and 56 percent of DHP included patient communication skills specific to eating disorders. Moreover, DHP were observed dedicating more instruction time for this skill (p=.011). As greater emphasis is placed on oral/systemic health and the provision of comprehensive care, many oral health professionals may not be adequately trained to identify, provide education, and communicate with patients regarding the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders. The findings from this study indicate that there is a need for appropriate training to better prepare oral health professionals for comprehensive patient care.

Learning To Do The Job: The Transfer Experiences Of Three Child Welfare Workers., Patricia Ann Chase Jan 2002

Learning To Do The Job: The Transfer Experiences Of Three Child Welfare Workers., Patricia Ann Chase

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three child welfare workers were studied over the period of one month to investigate their transfer experiences with learning one aspect of their agency's information system. Internal reviews within the agency had determined that the information system was not being used effectively, so this investigation was conducted to construct a picture of how these workers learned to use the system and whether there were issues related to both training and transfer that contributed to the ineffective use of the system. Data on each case were collected before, during, and after training using interviews, pre/post tests, questionnaires, observation notes, and worker …

Distributive Justice And Health Care, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2002

Distributive Justice And Health Care, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The challenge of contemporary health care distribution is to structure a framework for normative decision making whereby the goal of distributive justice is achieved equitably for as many citizens as possible. Establishing fair procedures for the distribution of health care resources is a crucial goal for contemporary society to set and, hopefully, to achieve. It is only by and through deliberate debate within a democracy that assumptions, for example, about aging, the value of life for the aged and intergenerational responsibilities of assisting them in their care can be set, tested or - as the case may be - rejected. …
