Sexual Harassment: Do Perceptions Differ Across Race And Sex?, Amanda J. Webster Jan 2002

Sexual Harassment: Do Perceptions Differ Across Race And Sex?, Amanda J. Webster

McNair Scholars Journal

Sexual harassment is a prevalent problem in the business world today. It interferes with effective organizational performance and has significant physical and psychological consequences for the direct victim (e.g., Gutek & Koss, 1993, Hanisch, 1996) and any indirect victims (e.g., Glomb, Richman, Hulin, Drasgow, Schneider, & Fitzgerald, 1997). The past two decades have seen a proliferation of research on the frequency of sexual harassment (Cohen & Gutek, 1985; Fitzgerald & Hesson-McInnis, 1989; Gutek & Koss, 1993), as well as how individuals perceive the harasser, the victim, and the situation (Corr & Jackson, 2001; Henry & Meltzof, 1998; Perry, Schmidtke, & …

Sharing Accounting's Burden: Business Lawyers In Enron's Dark Shadows, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2002

Sharing Accounting's Burden: Business Lawyers In Enron's Dark Shadows, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A familiar pass-the-buck pas de deus in deal meetings occurs when the accountant says, after an impasse, "that's a legal problem" while the lawyer says "that's an accounting problem." The truth is, both are right; the trouble is, as Enron shows, prevailing professional cultures create a crack between law and accounting that resolute fraud artists exploit, not cultures that emphasize the intersection of law and accounting that should foil would-be fraudsters. As policymakers rush to respond to Enron, this perspective on law and accounting should be appreciated, as should Enron's place in soecity's parade of corporate debacles. At Enron's core …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The adsorptive immobilization and electrochemistry of horse and yeast cytochrome c on indium/tin oxide (ITO) electrodes is reported. Near-monolayer coverage was achieved in pH 7 phosphate buffers of ionic strength equal to 10 and 50 mM, respectively, for the horse and yeast species. The layers exhibit very well-behaved voltammetry and are stable on the timescale of hours to days. Cyclic voltammetry revealed quasireversible behavior that is a product of both electron transfer (ET) kinetics and ET-induced conformational changes. A square scheme mechanism linking the redox states and the conformational states is proposed. Using a simple ET kinetic model that adequately …

The Impact Of Maternal Race, Birthplace, And Regional Mobility Status On Birth Outcomes, Pattie Jo Carter Tucker

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is variation in birth outcomes to U.S.-born women that moved to or within the U.S. southern region. The 1995, 1996, and 1997 national files of linked birth/infant death certificates were combined to examine the relationship between maternal characteristics and adverse birth outcomes. The data were classified by maternal race (non-Hispanic African American and White American), and maternal mobility status was categorized into three groups: (a) nonmigrants—born in the southern region and delivered in their state of birth, (b) inter-region migrants—born in the southern region and delivered in a southern state …

Development Of An Electronically-Controlled, Multidose, Nasal, Drug-Delivery Device, Aravind Balasubramanian

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In recent years, the nasal route has received a great deal of attention as convenient and reliable method of systemic administration of drugs, due to its benefits of reduced pain, precise drug delivery and eliminated risk of intravenous needles. The pharmaceutical industries are facing a competitive challenge introducing novel devices for the nasal drug delivery, which is better than commercially available, unit dose and squeeze bottle sprayers. The purpose of this study is to develop such a device for the nasal drug delivery that would satisfy the needs of the patients, physicians and pharmacist. An electronically controlled multi-dose nasal drug …

Appeals From Pleas Of Guilty And Nolo Contendere: History And Procedural Considerations., Kevin Yeary Jan 2002

Appeals From Pleas Of Guilty And Nolo Contendere: History And Procedural Considerations., Kevin Yeary

St. Mary's Law Journal

The changing history of appeal rights—made through decisional interpretation by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals—highlights the importance of staying current on interpretations of procedural and substantive rules. Lawyers owe their clients a duty to understand the history of the right to appeal from a conviction following a guilty plea. Additionally, they owe their clients a duty to understand substantive and procedural requirements for maintaining such appeals, as well as to stay abreast of changes affecting these appeals. Recently, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals handed down several opinions drastically reshaping the landscape for appeals following pleas of guilty and …

An Essay On The Tort Of Negligent Infliction Of Emotion Distress In Texas: Stop Saying It Does Not Exist., Charles E. Cantu Jan 2002

An Essay On The Tort Of Negligent Infliction Of Emotion Distress In Texas: Stop Saying It Does Not Exist., Charles E. Cantu

St. Mary's Law Journal

The injury of emotional distress is an interesting tort, which has long perplexed the Anglo-American system of jurisprudence. While, originally, allegations of this kind did not constitute a cause of action, today, there is no question that an injured plaintiff may recover for the infliction of emotional distress. The majority and minority positions differ now only on what must be alleged and proved. Texas was the first jurisdiction in the United States to allow recovery for mental anguish. However, in 1993 in the case of Boyles v. Kerr, the Texas Supreme Court appeared to depart from the majority view when …

Ethics: Lawyering And Professionalism., Broadus A. Spivey Jan 2002

Ethics: Lawyering And Professionalism., Broadus A. Spivey

St. Mary's Law Journal

Because public perception is a major issue that confronts the legal community, Texas encourages lawyers to maintain a civil, professional, and courteous environment. The work of lawyers may be divided into three parts: first, a lawyer must consider several factors when communicating with a potential client; second, a lawyer must attend to the creation of the lawyer-client relationship; and third, a lawyer must effectively manage the lawyer-client relationship. The rules of ethical deportment for attorneys are contained in the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, which specifically address barratry and similar offenses related to the improper solicitation of potential clients. …

Shoot Out At The Not-O.K. Corral Or Privileged Client Communications - Lost And Found In Texas., Walter W. Steele Jr. Jan 2002

Shoot Out At The Not-O.K. Corral Or Privileged Client Communications - Lost And Found In Texas., Walter W. Steele Jr.

St. Mary's Law Journal

Texas’s solutions to inadvertently disclosed privileged material are unworkable. Confidentiality of client information is a bedrock of the legal profession. Nonetheless, some confidential information invariably leaks out. The most common leak occurs when a lawyer inadvertently includes privileged material in boxes of documents produced in response to a legitimate discovery request. After the opposing lawyer finds the “hot documents” in the box, the problems begin. The Texas Supreme Court adopted what amounts to the reasonable precautions test in Granada Corp. v. First Court of Appeals. The cornerstone of the Granada holding is the involuntary nature of the production of the …

Proposed Conflict Of Interest And Confidentiality Rules., Luther H. Soules Iii Jan 2002

Proposed Conflict Of Interest And Confidentiality Rules., Luther H. Soules Iii

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Texas Supreme Court and the State Bar of Texas should fully adopt the proposals to the Rules of Professional Conduct 1.05–1.13 addressing attorney confidentiality and conflicts of interest. Historically, the Rules of Professional Conduct have set a floor which a lawyer may be subject to discipline, the Rules, however, do not offer bright lines for deciding questions of law, ethics, or fairness. Because the rules of professional responsibility in the legal industry are ambiguous in nature and often encumber a lawyer’s ability to effectively represent clients, the Texas Disciplinary Rules Committee recommends modification to the Rules of Professional Conduct …

The SEAR Project is described, as is the National Assessments of Scientific Literacy which will test the scientific literacy of year 6 students in 2003.

A Cmos Imager With Pfm/Pwm Based Analog-To-Digital Converter, Amine Bermak Jan 2002

A Cmos Imager With Pfm/Pwm Based Analog-To-Digital Converter, Amine Bermak

Research outputs pre 2011

An on-pixel analog-to-digital converter based on both PFM and PWM schemes is reported. The proposed architecture uses a limited number of transistors that can be implemented in a small silicon area resulting in a 23% fill-factor. The digital sensor can be externally configured in order to operate under either the PFM or PWM scheme. At high light intensities, the PFM scheme is replaced by the PWM scheme which proves to be much more efficient in terms of power consumption and clock frequency requirements. An in-built light adaptation mechanism has also been implemented which allows the sensor to better adapt to …

Applications Of Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulators In Optical Communications, Selam Ahderom, Mherdad Raisi, Kungmang Lo, Kamal E. Alameh, Rafie Mavaddat

Research outputs pre 2011

Advances in liquid crystal (LC) materials and VLSI technology have enabled the development of multi-phase spatial light modulators (SLM) that can perform high-resolution, dynamic optical beam positioning as well as temporal and spatial beam shaping in the 1550 nm optical communication window. These attractive features can effectively be used to achieve optical switching, optical spectral equalization, tunable optical filtering and many other functions that are important for future reconfigurable optical telecommunication networks. We review potential optical telecommunication applications based on LC-SLMs.

Use Of The D15n Signatures Of Different Functional Forms Of Macroalgae And Filter-Feeders To Reveal Temporal And Spatial Patterns In Sewage Distribution, Mahvesh Khan, Paul Lavery, A J Smit

Research outputs pre 2011

We examined whether δ15N levels of marine biota with different nutrient uptake characteristics can be used to trace the dispersal of sewage effluent in highly mixed, nitrogen-limited waters, and whether they can reveal the dispersal of sewage over different timescales. We hypothesised that macroalgal species with fast uptake rates would display a spatial pattern in δ15N levels reflecting recent sewage dispersal while those with slower rates would provide a signal integrated over a longer time period. Filterfeeding sponges and ascidians were also sampled to see if they reflected patterns in the dispersal of sewage particulate organic matter (POM). A laboratory …
