Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura Jan 2002

Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this Note surveys some of the recent contributions that social theorists and social scientists have made to our understanding of the role of experts in society, and also the structure of expert communities. Experts are everywhere in modern life, and individuals are with increasing frequency asked to extend their trust to experts and bodies of knowledge that they have little or no opportunity to question. Part II highlights how the WTO Agreement deals with experts, using recent WTO panel reports to illustrate the ways in which the DSB has operationalized its various provisions. Part III suggests two …

Teaching A Professional Responsibility Course: Lessons Learned From The Clinic, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez Jan 2002

Teaching A Professional Responsibility Course: Lessons Learned From The Clinic, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez

Faculty Scholarship

In teaching Ethics or Professional Responsibility, I want to do more than teach students the law of the course. While it is important that students become familiar with and able to navigate the rules of professional responsibility, my clinical teaching has helped me develop additional educational objectives that I believe will affect their lives as future lawyers. I categorize my objectives in a three-credit classroom professional responsibility course as three-fold: 1) teaching the law of lawyering; 2) exploring professionalism issues;20 and 3) critically examining the profession. I will discuss a few of my experiences teaching in the clinic and how …

Farmworkers As An Environmental Justice Issue: Similarities And Differences, Eileen Gauna Jan 2002

Farmworkers As An Environmental Justice Issue: Similarities And Differences, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Scholarship

This paper endeavors to situate farmworker issues within a broader context of issues in environmental regulation. Environmental regulation is itself a subset of a broader universe of environmental justice concerns. In approaching the issue this way, the author highlights some of the similarities farmworker issues share with other regulatory environmental justice issues. The author highlights the dramatic differences as well. Leaving to others the task of describing the dire conditions of the farmworker, the author takes two important examples of regulatory mechanisms designed to protect farmworkers and describe some of the commonalities. The two sites of regulatory activity used are …

Understanding The Interfaces: How Ocean Freight Shipping Lines Can Maximize Satisfaction, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Physical distribution services are becoming increasingly important as supply chains strive to become more efficient in the logistical flow of goods to industrial customers. Performance of these services, however, takes place during encounters that customers have with various interfacing departments within the firm. These encounters may ultimately determine the level of satisfaction clients have with the service and the concomitant perceived quality. While previous research in this area has focused on service quality assessment, little attention has been given to determining the pattern of interfacing departments that maximize service satisfaction. This study examines a sample of shipping managers in Singapore …

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch

Open Access Master's Theses

This study simulates individuals that are modeled after benthic macroinvertebrate populations from streams in Vermont. Using the EPA biological scoring criteria for assessing the overall condition of streams, we analyzed two metrics (parameters) associated with these criteria. The two metrics, taxa richness and Community Loss Index (CLI) have "critical" values that were set by the EPA. These "critical" values although well established are not be justified statistically. In order to analyze these "critical" values, we analyzed three different options: sample size, taxonomic level, and changing the "critical" value to achieve our goal.

We asked the question, how often would two …

Family Functioning Of Portuguese Families With A Clinically Depressed Family Member, Marco S. Andrade Jan 2002

Family Functioning Of Portuguese Families With A Clinically Depressed Family Member, Marco S. Andrade

Open Access Master's Theses

There have been a limited number of studies investigating cross-cultural similarities and differences in family functioning. Previous research that has been conducted on the family functioning of families with a depressed member has indicated unhealthy family functioning as compared to families without a depressed member (Keitner, Miller, Epstein, Bishop, & Fruzzetti, 1987; Miller, Kabacoff, Keitner, Epstein, & Bishop, 1986; Sawyer, Sarris, Baghurst, Cross, & Kalucy, 1988). The purpose of this study was to: (1) investigate whether Portuguese families with a depressed member had unhealthy family functioning as measured by the Family Assessment Device (FAD) (Epstein, Baldwin, & Bishop, 1983); and …

Green In Everybody's Neighborhood: Assessing The Distribution Of Parks And Open Spaces In The City Of Providence, Krista Alessandro Jan 2002

Green In Everybody's Neighborhood: Assessing The Distribution Of Parks And Open Spaces In The City Of Providence, Krista Alessandro

Open Access Master's Theses

Scholarship on environmental justice has focused on such issues as the concentration of hazardous commercial activities and lack of transportation options in poorer, minority communities. Although we must recognize and address the discriminatory distribution of environmental harms, real environmental justice also requires a fair distribution of such environmental goods as the presence of high quality green space and different forms of recreational activities. Ulrich (1993) argues that urban civilizations throughout the centuries have made continuous efforts to maintain contact with natural settings through gardens or parks. Furthermore, he states that providing parks can improve psychological and physical well-being in addition …

The Changing Face Of Public Transit Service Standards: An In-Depth Assessment Of The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, Hasassah Moran Jan 2002

The Changing Face Of Public Transit Service Standards: An In-Depth Assessment Of The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, Hasassah Moran

Open Access Master's Theses

Transit authorities across the nation use standards as a foundational blueprint for the delivery of service. These standards give an overall view of the type, quality, and amount of service, as well as logistical information such as processes and procedures. "Even today, with virtually every transit system under public ownership, the need continues for a system for standards. In the most organized and well-run agencies, services and routes exist that are seriously out of conformance with the rest of the system" (Benn 1995:3). In 1992, Abrams Cherwony and Associates, a consultant group, conducted an examination of the service standards at …

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood

Open Access Master's Theses

Sustainability, while it is a global movement, is not well understood by the public. The main goals of this project were to develop a process to educate community residents in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island about sustainability across scales (local, state, region, nation and beyond) and to help a community to create a definition and vision of sustainability locally.

Two main tools were used. First, a series of workshops was organized to teach a community group about sustainability and to suggest ways in which it might apply to their own community. Second, a Green Mapping system was used to develop a …

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton Jan 2002

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A simple, rapid, and effective method for the extraction of fifteen organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides based on the use of solid phase Bond Elut C-18 cartridges was studied as an alternative method to those based on extraction with organic solvents. Solid phase extraction is an attractive chromatographic sample preparation technology that reduces analysis time, costs, labor, and solvent consumption relative to traditional liquid/liquid extraction methods. The sample recoveries with the use of solid phase extractions were excellent for most pesticides. Analyte concentration by a factor as great as 1000-fold was achieved readily. The adsorbed pesticides were eluted from the solid …

Pressure And Flow Validation Of A Second Generation Gas Extraction Probe For A Hybrid Rocket Gas Extraction System, Constance Meadors, Andrew B. Wright

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A gas extraction system (GES) has been designed for use with the hybrid rocket facility at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) for spectroscopic analysis of rocket plumes. While monitoring gas flow-rate and pressure, the GES extracts gases from the hybrid rocket plume and transports them to a mass spectrometer. This paper describes design and construction of a gas extraction probe (GEP) prototype capable of extracting gases directly from the plume. Gas dynamics equations were used to design two venturi-type GEP, converging and converging-diverging. The probe was tested with air to verify design assumptions. Flow rate through the …

Oxidation-Reduction Characteristics Of Chlorophenols In An Aprotic Medium, Cecil A. Sorrells, Ali U. Shaikh, Victor M. Samokyszyn

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Eighteen chlorophenols, containing from one to five chlorine atoms on the benzene ring at various positions, have been studied by cyclic voltammetric methods to evaluate their oxidation-reduction characteristics in an aprotic medium. The compounds were dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide containing 0.10 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as the supporting electrolyte and were then both oxidized and reduced on a glassy carbon electrode. The results indicate that phenols oxidize in a one-step process to phenoxium ion which dimerizes to quinone ether. The ether can be reduced back to phenol in a two-step reduction process. The oxidation potential of the chlorophenols varies with the number …

Effects Of Welding Electropolished Stainless Steel As Used In Ultra-Pure Fluid Delivery Systems For The Semiconductor And Pharmaceutical Industries, Steve Trigwell, Guna Selvaduray

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries, care is taken to prevent any contribution to product contamination or corrosion from the fluid delivery systems. Electropolished 316L stainless steel has become the industry standard due to its superior corrosion resistance. However, welding of the tubing often leads to discoloration in the heat affected zone (HAZ) which can lead to corrosion. Electropolished specimens from various lots of 316L stainless steel tubing were welded under identical parameters, but with varying concentrations of oxygen leaked into the argon purge gas during the welding, simulating on-site welding conditions. Various levels of discoloration were observed in the …

Societal Response To Developmental Differences And Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Randall R. Osborne

McNair Scholars Journal

Recent findings indicate an increased concern that conventional substance abuse treatment models consistently reflect less than satisfactory outcomes when applied to adolescents. This study investigates developmental differences among adolescents and adults as a possible cause of the disparity. The author conducted interviews with substance abuse professionals, developmental psychologists, adolescents in treatment, and adolescents no less than six months out of treatment. Questions focus on assessment agendas, developmental and motivational differences among adolescents and adults, movement along the addiction continuum, developmental tasks of adolescence, and adolescent receptivity. The results of the interviews among each group are compared and consistencies are noted. …
