The Use Of Photographic Caricatures To Examine The Development Of A Perception Of Facial Attractiveness, Bronwyn J. Struthers
The Use Of Photographic Caricatures To Examine The Development Of A Perception Of Facial Attractiveness, Bronwyn J. Struthers
Theses : Honours
Throughout the human population, there is remarkable agreement as to what constitutes an attractive face. The consistency of attractiveness ratings across age, gender and culture has led to a search for an underlying construct that determines facial attractiveness. Langlois and Roggman (1990) proposed the "average is attractive" hypothesis arguing that facial attractiveness is determined by the level of averageness of facial features. Langlois and Roggman (1990) created composite faces to examine this hypothesis but their methodology was criticised, particularly because the technique used to create the composites tended to remove facial flaws and blemishes. This led to the argument that …

Does Plant Morphology Influence Fish Fauna Associated With Seagrass Meadows?, Michael C. Burt
Theses : Honours
Three distinct seagrass habitats were sampled to determine whether fish assemblages differed between meadows comprising of different seagrass species with different morphological characteristics and whether plant morphology influences species assemblages. Three seagrass habitats consisting of Posidonia sinuosa, Posidonia coriacea and meadows of a mixture of P. coriacea and Heterozostera tasmanica in the Success Bank region, off the coast of Fremantle, Western Australia were selected. For each habitat, sampling was carried out using a 1m wide beam trawl over a distance of 50m at six replicated locations, on three occasions between June and September 2002. Seagrass samples were collected at each …

Looking The Other Way: A Critique Of The Fair-Lending Enforcement System And A Plan To Fix It, Stephen L. Ross, John Yinger
Center for Policy Research
In 2001, the homeownership rate in the United States reached 67.8 percent--an all-time high. The benefits of homeownership were not evenly spread across ethnic groups, however. In fact, the homeownership rate was 74.3 percent for non-Hispanic whites, 48.4 percent for non-Hispanic blacks, and 47.3 percent for Hispanics (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 2002, Table 29). These homeownership gaps undoubtedly have many causes, but one of the key suspects is discrimination in mortgage lending. The vast majority of households cannot buy a house without a mortgage loan, and discriminatory barriers to obtaining a mortgage could have a dramatic impact …

Globalization, Inequality, And The Rich Countries Of The G-20: Evidence From The Luxembourg Income Study (Lis), Timothy M. Smeeding
Center for Policy Research
The purpose of this study is to summarize and comment upon what we know about the determinants of both the level and trend in economic inequality over the past two decades, and to relate these findings to the progress of globalization in these nations. While the fruits of economic progress in rich nations have not been equally spread, we argue that most citizens enrich Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations have benefited from the trend toward global economic progress. We begin with a summary of the differences in overall economic inequality within the G-20 nations based on LIS …

Common Sense In The Basic Public Speaking Course, Calvin L. Troup
Common Sense In The Basic Public Speaking Course, Calvin L. Troup
Basic Communication Course Annual
The foundation of the basic public speaking course ought to be questioned and modified to better meet the needs of students today. More specifically, public speaking courses must offer more than technique. Students must be introduced to the historical context that both models effective public discourse and has also contributed to the framework of the American public forum. This article offers some common sense ideas about what the public forum ought to be. Implementation of these ideas, among other things, will serve to enrich the substance of the course, introduce the central role of rhetoric in American history, culture, and …

As sources of information relevant to a particular domain proliferate, we need a methodology for locating, aggregating, relating, fusing, reconciling, and presenting information to users. Interoperability thus must occur not only among the information, but also among the different software applications that process it. Given the large number of potential sources and applications, interoperability becomes an extremely large problem for which manual solutions are impractical. A combination of software agents and ontologies can supply the necessary methodology for interoperability.
Agents As Web Services, Michael N. Huhns
Agents As Web Services, Michael N. Huhns
Faculty Publications
Web services are extremely flexible. Most advantageously, a developer of Web services need not know who or what will use the services being provided. The paper discusses current standards for Web services, directory services and the Semantic Web. It considers how agents extend Web services in several important ways.

If you only need agents to search the Web for cheap CDs, scalability is not an issue. The Web can support numerous agents if each acts independently. In short order, however, billions of embedded agents that sense their environment and interact with us and other agents will fill our world, making the human environment friendlier and more efficient. These agents will need not only scalable infrastructures and communication services, but also scalable social services encompassing ethics and laws. Research projects are under way around the world to develop and deploy such services. The author takes a look at the critical …
Environmental Effects On Developing Wheat As Sensed By Near-Infrared Reflectance Of Mature Grains, Stephen R. Delwiche, Robert A. Graybosch, Lenis Alton Nelson, William R. Hruschka
Environmental Effects On Developing Wheat As Sensed By Near-Infrared Reflectance Of Mature Grains, Stephen R. Delwiche, Robert A. Graybosch, Lenis Alton Nelson, William R. Hruschka
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
For 30 years, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has routinely been applied to the cereal grains for the purpose of rapidly measuring concentrations of constituents such as protein and moisture. The research described herein examined the ability of NIR reflectance spectroscopy on harvested wheat to determine weather-related, quality-determining properties that occurred during plant development. Twenty commercial cultivars or advanced breeding lines of hard red winter and hard white wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown in 10 geographical locations under prevailing natural conditions of the U.S. Great Plains. Diffuse reflectance spectra (1,100-2,498 nm) of ground wheat from these samples were modeled by …

The Rwandese, Clea Msindo Koff, Ralph J. Hartley
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The Rwandese are a set of peoples who live in the country of Rwanda in eastern central Africa who today number an estimated 7.9 million.2 Rwanda is a small country that has the highest population density (numbers of people per square-mile) in Africa. All Rwandese speak Rwanda (Kinyarwanda), and some speak French, Swahili, or English. Rwandese identify with three population groups called Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Today, these labels are used as ethnic identifiers; however, in the past they designated an individual's occupation. It is not clear if the words Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa existed in ancient times when people …
The Effects Of Marination And Cook Cycles On High And Low Ph Beef Muscles, Ryan Baumert, Roger W. Mandigo
The Effects Of Marination And Cook Cycles On High And Low Ph Beef Muscles, Ryan Baumert, Roger W. Mandigo
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Infraspinatus and Serratus ventralis, the muscles of the high pH group, had lower shear force values and higher sensory analysis scores for tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability than low pH muscles (Deep pectoral and Biceps femoris). Increasing the phosphate level in the marination system increased moisture content of the cooked roast and sensory juiciness scores and decreased the cooking loss of the roasts. Low humidity cookery had higher sensory juiciness, tenderness and acceptability scores and lower cooking losses than high humidity cookery. The Infraspinatus and Serratus ventralis are recommended for use in a marination system with low humidity cookery.

Economic Analysis Of Calf Versus Yearling Finishing, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Rob Cooper, Tony Scott, Galen E. Erickson, Richard T. Clark
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The objective of this report was to compare economics of calf- and yearling- finishing systems. Yearling steers were wintered at 1.54 lb/day (fast) or 0.42 lb/day (slow) then grazed over the summer followed by finishing. Calf-fed steers were purchased in the fall and finished. Profit was based on 1992 to 1999 average price levels. Steers on the fast treatment profited $21.00/head compared to -$20.66/head for slow and -$23.18/head for calf feds. Calf-feeding was also compared to only the finishing phase of yearling systems. Steers on the fast system profited $29.78/head compared to $17.83 for slow and -$23.18 for calf feds.

Subsequent Summer Forage Intake Following Winter Gain Restriction, D. J. Jordon, Dale Downs, Galen E. Erickson, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Data were collected to determine effect of winter gain on forage intake and summer and finishing performance of yearling steers. Steers wintered at reduced gains compensated 17 and 48% over two years. Intake, as a percentage of body weight, was increased for compensating steers. Steers gaining faster in winter had a reduced break even ($67.01 vs 70.05/cwt) and were more profitable ($5.79 vs -31.32/ head) compared to slower gaining steers. Growing animals at faster (1.50 - 1.65 lb/day) compared to slower (0.45 - 0.55 lb/day) rates of winter gain is superior unless 65%-70% compensation is achieved.

Effects Of Rumensin Level During An Acidosis Challenge, Trey Patterson, Todd Milton, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, M. Blackford, Cal Parrott
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Eighteen ruminally cannulated steers were used to determine effects of Rumensin level on incidence and severity of acidosis when an acidosis challenge was imposed. Steers received a high-concentrate finishing diet containing either 0, 30, or 45 grams/ton Rumensin. An acidosis challenge was created by feeding only 50% of diet intake one day followed by 175% of intake the next day, four hours post normal feeding time. Feeding Rumensin decreased feed intake during the prechallenge, challenge and acidosis recovery phase. Compared to 30 grams/ ton, feed intake was decreased by increasing Rumensin to 45 grams/ton during the five days following the …
Immigration Sponsorship Rights For Gay And Lesbian Couples: Defining Partnerships, Desiree Alonso
Immigration Sponsorship Rights For Gay And Lesbian Couples: Defining Partnerships, Desiree Alonso
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note advocates for the passage of the Permanent Partners Immigration Act (PPIA) to address the inequality faced by same-sex couples in U.S. immigration law. It argues that the PPIA would provide a parallel system allowing same-sex partners to sponsor each other for immigration without challenging the traditional definition of marriage under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The note emphasizes the importance of recognizing same-sex partnerships to uphold the principle of family reunification and equality.
A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman
A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) should be legally recognized as a severe mental disorder, allowing defendants to use a diminished capacity defense in cases of accidental filicide. The author critiques the legal system's inconsistent treatment of MSBP, which often focuses on the physical harm to the child while neglecting the mother's mental state. By acknowledging MSBP as a psychiatric disorder, the law could achieve more nuanced outcomes that consider both the act and the defendant's mental condition, reducing stigma and promoting fairness in criminal liability assessments.

Preventing Inequities In Divorce And Education: The Equitable Distribution Of A Career Absent An Advanced Degree Or License, Sebastian Weiss
Preventing Inequities In Divorce And Education: The Equitable Distribution Of A Career Absent An Advanced Degree Or License, Sebastian Weiss
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note advocates for the extension of New York's equitable distribution laws to include careers without advanced degrees or licenses as marital assets. It argues that courts should consider the enhanced earning capacity of a spouse, even when not tied to a degree or license, to prevent inequities in divorce, consistent with the principles established in cases like O'Brien v. O'Brien.

Nursing As Social Responsibility: Implications For Democracy From The Life Perspective Of Lavinia Lloyd Dock (1858-1956), Soledad Mujica Smith
Nursing As Social Responsibility: Implications For Democracy From The Life Perspective Of Lavinia Lloyd Dock (1858-1956), Soledad Mujica Smith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on Lavinia Lloyd Dock's (1858-1956) re-envisioning of nursing and caring as social responsibility and the implications of this conceptualization for democracy. Dock was an American nurse, educator, settlement worker, suffragist, pacifist, social activist, writer, and historian. Her conception of holistic welfare embodied a 'new ideal' of society (Dock 1907, p. 899), a new understanding of democracy, and an expression of citizenship based on social responsibility for the welfare of others. Dock's idea of democracy embraced women's values and ways of being in the world; disputed universal, individual rights; and privileged communal values, collaboration, inclusion, and diversity. Moreover, …
The Greek Sophists : Teachers Of Virtue, David Dwyer Corey
The Greek Sophists : Teachers Of Virtue, David Dwyer Corey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of the Greek sophists as teachers of aretê (virtue or human excellence) and a study of the conflict between sophistic and Socratic political values as portrayed in the dialogues of Plato. The first section offers a new definition of the term "sophist" based on ancient sources and attempts to present as clear a picture as is historically possible of the sophists' activities. The second section examines and evaluates Plato's criticisms of the sophists drawing attention especially to the dependence of certain criticisms upon a questionable set of epistemological assumptions about the role of knowledge in …

Polyamines As Olfactory Stimuli In Goldfish, Shane Howell Rolen
Polyamines As Olfactory Stimuli In Goldfish, Shane Howell Rolen
LSU Master's Theses
The effects of polyamines as odorants to goldfish olfactory receptors were investigated by in vivo electrophysiological recordings. Electro-olfactogram (EOG) recordings indicated that polyamines (putrescine, cadaverine and spermine) are potent olfactory stimuli for goldfish with estimated electrophysiological thresholds of 10-100nM, similar to that for L-arginine, the most stimulatory amino acid. Although thresholds were similar, the magnitude of the EOG responses to intermediate and high concentrations of polyamines dwarfed those to amino acids and single amine containing compounds (amylamine and butylamine). The EOG responses to 0.1mM putrescine, cadaverine and spermine were, respectively, 4.2x, 4.3x and 10.3x that of the standard, 0.1mM L-arginine. …

Open Space For The Public: An Evaluation Of Designed Open Spaces On Urban University Campuses, Elizabeth Errett Neil
LSU Master's Theses
A public university that is perceived as being physically open and accessible to the general public can help promote a better relationship between the city and the university. Public urban universities have a responsibility to provide usable, accessible open space for the public. Universities and designers recognize the importance of integrating their campus into the community and creating spaces for students that allow for outdoor and social activities. However, little attention has been given to the need to provide spaces that allow for outdoor and social activities for the public. The public urban university was used as a model because …
