Hearing Impairment In Low Birth Weight Children, Kamal J. Daghistani, Tarek S. Jamal, Siraj M. Zakzouk
Neurosciences
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of hearing impairment in normal and low birth weight children. METHODS: A survey of 9540 Saudi children below 15 years of age was carried out. The survey was performed in the provinces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 1994 to May 1998. The subjects were classified into low birth weight (up to 2.5 kg) and normal birth weight (>2.5 kg) groups. Each child was carefully examined for hearing status. RESULTS: The results of this study showed significantly high prevalence of hearing impairment in low birth weight children (14.87%) as compared to normal …

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in the epidemiology of bacterial meningitis in the era of the Hemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) type b vaccine and pneumoccous resistance. METHODS: Retrospective study which included patients admitted to Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar between January 1998 through to December 2000 with positive cerebrospinal fluid culture. RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients with culture proven bacterial meningitis were described. Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) and H. influenzae were the most common organisms, accounting for 30% and 24% of cases. Fever, neck stiffness, vomiting, and bulging fontanel were the most frequent presenting features. Fifty four percent of S. pneumoniae isolates …

D-Penicillamine Induced Myasthenia Gravis, Thomas Varghese, Riaz Ahmed, Jayaram D. Sankaran, Saleh M. Al-Khusaiby
Neurosciences
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder of impaired neuromuscular transmission resulting in weakness and abnormal fatigability on exertion, improved by anti-acetyl cholinesterase drugs. A number of drugs are known to exacerbate myasthenia gravis or interfere with neuromuscular transmission. We report a case of D-penicillamine induced myasthenia gravis who developed ptosis, diplopia and easy fatigability, 4 years after initiation of the drug for Wilson’s disease. On stopping the drug, within 3 months all her symptoms disappeared without any anti-acetyl cholinesterase drugs. Thus, the onset of drug induced myasthenia gravis could be insidious but the withdrawal of the drug leads to rapid recovery.

Weather And The First Episode Of Schizophrenia, Mohamed Z. Zawahri
Neurosciences
OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the effect of weather on the occurrence of the first episode of Schizophrenia. METHODS: The relationship between weather and the first episode of schizophrenia was investigated at Ibn Sina Psychiatric Hospital, Damascus, Syria, from 1997 to 1999. RESULTS: Schizophrenia in developing countries affects men at a higher rate than women. The highest rates are found in lower socioeconomic classes, and the first episode of the disease usually occurs in May or June, and after weather changes. CONCLUSION: High temperature (equal or exceeding body temperature) is considered one of the outside factors of schizophrenia, however, as yet the …

Combined Brucella Melitensis And Streptococcal Viridans Endocarditis, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Bashir A. Wani, Suphia M. Sherbeeni
Saudi Medical Journal
Infectious endocarditis is a potentially lethal inflammation of the hearts9 inner lining invaded by microorganisms. The mortality from this illness increases as the number of infective organisms rises to 2, due to involvement of the left side of the heart. These microorganisms usually arise from the patient9s own flora but can be acquired from the environment. Fever and heart murmurs are the principal clinical manifestations followed by a plethora of peripheral signs due to dissemination of microorganisms via the bloodstream. Echocardiographic imaging and sensitive culture techniques form the cornerstone of diagnosis. We report a patient with rheumatic heart disease who …

Meningococcal disease occurs as both endemic and epidemic disease in most parts of the world with significant morbidity and mortality. Among the different serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis, serogroups A, B, C account for 90% of the disease. In the last few years there has been a change in the epidemiology of the disease with an increase in the prevalence of serogroup C in Europe and North America, serogroup Y in the United States of America and Sweden, and W135 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The emergence of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W135 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has lead …

An Evidence-Based Review Of Dopamine Receptor Agonists In The Treatment Of Parkinson’S Disease, Dirk Deleu, Margaret G. Northway, Yolande Hanssens
Neurosciences
Apomorphine and certain ergot alkaloids (bromocriptine, lisuride and pergolide) have been available for several decades; for the last few years, they were joined by newer dopamine agonists (cabergoline, pramipexole and ropinirole) most of them are non-ergolines. Each of these dopamine agonists has its own pharmacological characteristics and occupies a place in the pharmacotherapy of Parkinsons disease. In this evidence-based review, emphasis is put on the clinical efficacy of dopamine agonists in early and advanced Parkinsons disease, and where possible comparative evidence regarding their efficacy and safety is provided. In addition, their clinical pharmacokinetics, adverse effect profiles and most relevant interactions …

Validating The Use Of The Shuttle Walking Test In Healthy Adult Women, Micheal C.M. Lim
Theses : Honours
The Shuttle Walking Test (SWT), with its externally paced characteristics, is commonly used as an objective measure of functional capacity. The reliability and validity of the SWT has been previously shown but only in patient populations. No studies have been carried out to investigate the validity of the SWT in healthy adult women. Therefore, the primary aim of this test was to determine if the SWT is a valid field measure of cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy adult women. A secondary aim was to identify if variables, such as age, body composition and habitual physical activity influence performance on the SWT. …

What Makes It Into The News: A Close Look At How News Sources At 6pr And 720 Abc Radio Influence News Selection, Angela Businoska

One of the roles of journalists today is to select the newsworthy stories from the endless amount of information which flows into their media organisation's newsroom. So, what is news and how do journalists decide what makes it and what docs not, in the news each day? Past and present research on this topic has thus far attempted to provide a formula, or consistent approach to the news selection process. To date, these newsroom studies have often been based at an international level, with results primarily originating from interviews with journalists themselves. This suggests that there are still many aspects …
The Use Of Photographic Caricatures To Examine The Development Of A Perception Of Facial Attractiveness, Bronwyn J. Struthers
The Use Of Photographic Caricatures To Examine The Development Of A Perception Of Facial Attractiveness, Bronwyn J. Struthers
Theses : Honours
Throughout the human population, there is remarkable agreement as to what constitutes an attractive face. The consistency of attractiveness ratings across age, gender and culture has led to a search for an underlying construct that determines facial attractiveness. Langlois and Roggman (1990) proposed the "average is attractive" hypothesis arguing that facial attractiveness is determined by the level of averageness of facial features. Langlois and Roggman (1990) created composite faces to examine this hypothesis but their methodology was criticised, particularly because the technique used to create the composites tended to remove facial flaws and blemishes. This led to the argument that …
