A Study Of The Poole-Rose Ossuary Ulnae: Demography, Defleshing And Degenerative Joint Disease, Natalie Anne Bodin

LSU Master's Theses

The Poole-Rose ossuary, a prehistoric Native Canadian population from Ontario, Canada, represents a Late Woodland period communal burial that has been radio-carbon dated to 1550 A.D. +/- 50 years. The location and attributes of this ossuary, a secondary burial deposit, led the site's excavator, Dr. Heather McKillop, to believe that it is a part of the "Feast of the Dead" ceremony. Due to commingling of the individuals, the human remains from this ossuary have been analyzed by element. This thesis examines the ulnae, one of the bones of the forearm, for evidence of degenerative joint disease. Additionally, the thesis includes …

Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom Jan 2002

Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study focuses on Hispanics and violent crime. Previous studies (Krivo and Peterson, 1993, Shihadeh and Flynn, 1996) analyze crime rates among blacks; however, the research on Hispanics is very limited (Massey and Denton, 1992). The majority of sociological studies analyze racial residential segregation in order to explain higher rates of violent crime among blacks. (Peterson and Krivo, 1993; Frey and Farley, 1996.) Most researchers employ the Index of Dissimilarity (D), which measures evenness (distribution of the population), in order to measure segregation. (Fischer and Massey, 2000). In this study, I plan to fill the gap in …

The Quality Of Hotel Employee Meals, And Employees' Perception Of The Quality, Eugene Tetteh Gorleku Jan 2002

The Quality Of Hotel Employee Meals, And Employees' Perception Of The Quality, Eugene Tetteh Gorleku

LSU Master's Theses

Growing interest in nutrition and health and the increase in the number of people eating away from home gives power and responsibility to retail foodservice operators. Employees of hotels, restaurants, and other food service establishments are in an important position to influence and impact the diet of the general public since they cook, recommend, and serve customers who visit their institutions. Healthful foods are available, and chefs would benefit from nutritional guidance. The escalating importance of foodservice establishments as the main distribution sites for Americans’ meals highlights the importance of the chef’s role in preparing and providing healthful food consistent …

The solution to the objective was approached under three distinct phases, namely (I) physical and chemical characterization of the pecan and almond shell-based experimental and bituminous coal and coconut shell-based commercial granular activated carbons; (II) treatment of organic contaminants in municipal wastewater by experimental and commercial GACs; (III) treatment of inorganic contaminants in municipal wastewater by experimental and commercial GACs. …

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (Haccp), Microbial Safety, And Shelf Life Of Smoked Blue Catfish (Ictalurus Furcatus), Ligia Virginia Antonia Da Silva Jan 2002

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (Haccp), Microbial Safety, And Shelf Life Of Smoked Blue Catfish (Ictalurus Furcatus), Ligia Virginia Antonia Da Silva

LSU Master's Theses

Quality deterioration of smoked catfish is caused by lipid oxidation and microbial spoilage. Smoked catfish can be cross-contaminated during processing and may harbor several pathogens, e.g., Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella spp. Lipid oxidation causes unpleasant flavor, thus making smoked fish unacceptable. Hydroperoxides and free radicals, formed during oxidation, may directly react with fish tissues to promote complex reactions. Through such complex reactions, physicochemical properties of smoked catfish may be adversely affected. A combination of smoking and treatments with antimicrobial agents and antioxidants would retard microbial spoilage, extend shelf life, and enhance safety of smoked catfish. The objective of this study …

The Effect Of Nocturnal Sampling On Semen Quality And The Efficiency Of Collection In Bovine Species, Jennifer H. Yates

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of this study was to evaluate two semen collection schedules utilizing the assumed behavioral differences between bovine species. The efficiency was measured by bull behavior and semen quality parameters. Four Holstein and four Brahman bulls were collected each during a morning and a night collection time weekly. Ejaculates (n=64) were obtained via artificial vagina over four-weeks. To avoid masking benefits of night collection, the first collection of the week was alternated between night and day. Two collection teams were employed to reduce the time needed for collection, and the variability in collection method. Sampling order and collection team …

Application Of Duhamel's Theorem To Problems Involving Oscillating Heat Source, Haribabu Krishnamurthy Jan 2002

Application Of Duhamel's Theorem To Problems Involving Oscillating Heat Source, Haribabu Krishnamurthy

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis deals with a systematic development of a method for predicting the temperature field in various domains subjected to oscillating heat sources on its boundaries using the Duhamel’s method. First a method is devised for single domain problems in both Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates for oscillating heat sources and also for unidirectional rotation of shafts in cylindrical coordinates. The analytically computed results for the problems in Cartesian coordinates compared favorably with the results from Finite Element Method, attesting to the validity of this novel approach. Later, the method is extended to predict the maximum temperature in oscillating Pin-Bushing mechanism, …

Public Health Law: A Renaissance, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2002

Public Health Law: A Renaissance, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Public health seeks to assure the conditions for people to be healthy. Public health can be distinguished from health care in several critical respects. Public health focuses on: (1) the health and safety of populations rather than the health of individual patients; (2) prevention of injury and disease rather than treatment and care; (3) relationships between the government and the community rather than the physician and patient; and (4) population based services grounded on the scientific methodologies of public health (e.g., biostatistics and epidemiology) rather than personal medical services. These critical features - populations, prevention, government and communities, and epidemiological …

Personal Privacy And Common Goods: A Framework For Balancing Under The National Health Information Privacy Rule, Lawrence O. Gostin, James G. Hodge Jr. Jan 2002

Personal Privacy And Common Goods: A Framework For Balancing Under The National Health Information Privacy Rule, Lawrence O. Gostin, James G. Hodge Jr.

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, we discuss how these principles for balancing apply in a number of important contexts where individually identifiable health data are shared. In Part I, we analyze the modern view favoring autonomy and privacy. In the last several decades, individual autonomy has been used as a justification for preventing sharing of information irrespective of the good to be achieved. Although respect for privacy can sometimes be important for achieving public purposes (e.g., fostering the physician/patient relationship), it can also impair the achievement of goals that are necessary for any healthy and prosperous society. A framework for balancing that …

Twenty Years Of Labour Law And The Charter, Dianne Pothier Jan 2002

Twenty Years Of Labour Law And The Charter, Dianne Pothier

Dianne Pothier Collection

This article critically reviews the Charter jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Canada relating to labour law. The rejection of the right to strike and to bargain collectively as part of freedom of association reflect substantial judicial deference to legislative policy choices. Recently, however, a constitutional right of unfair labour protection for particularly vulnerable workers shows some judicial willingness to intervene. While freedom of expression provides significant scope to union supporters, picketing and leafleting are still subject to wide restraint, the exact parameters of which remain unclear. The Charter has had only a modest effect on labour law. Even successful …

State Responsibility And Climate Change: Could Canada Be Liable To Small Island States?, Phillip Barton Jan 2002

State Responsibility And Climate Change: Could Canada Be Liable To Small Island States?, Phillip Barton

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The projections of human-induced climate change by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have many low-lying island nations gravely concerned about their vulnerabilities to sea-level rise and extreme weather. Small island states jointly contribute less than 1% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually yet may experience some of the most severe consequences of climate change. This article investigates whether Canada could be liable if one of these nations turns to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to compensate for environmental impacts flowing from GHG emissions. Given the uncertainty in the liability standard that would be applied by the ICJ …

The Original Understanding Of The Census Clause: Statistical Estimates And The Constitutional Requirement Of An "Actual Enumeration", Thomas R. Lee Jan 2002

The Original Understanding Of The Census Clause: Statistical Estimates And The Constitutional Requirement Of An "Actual Enumeration", Thomas R. Lee

Washington Law Review

This Article addresses the question of whether statistical methods of estimating the population for purposes of congressional apportionment are consistent with the constitutional requirement of an "actual enumeration." Although the existing literature generally asserts that history provides no meaningful guidance on this question, this Article uncovers an extensive historical record--of both British and American origin—that supports the conclusion that the generation of the Framers understood that an "actual enumeration" would consist of an actual count and would not be based on statistical estimation. Specifically, the Article shows that assessments of population on both sides of the Atlantic routinely contrasted methods …

Does The Ghost Of Lochner Haunt Mission Springs? Ruminations On § 1983 Due Process Claims In Light Of Mission Springs, Inc. V. City Of Spokane, Mark K. Funke Jan 2002

Does The Ghost Of Lochner Haunt Mission Springs? Ruminations On § 1983 Due Process Claims In Light Of Mission Springs, Inc. V. City Of Spokane, Mark K. Funke

Washington Law Review

The last time the Washington Supreme Court applied substantive due process in a land use case was in Mission Springs, Inc. v. City of Spokane in 1998. Since then, the Washington Law Review has published four commentaries that address substantive due process in Washington land use, all of which characterize Washington's substantive due process law as producing undesirable results. However, none of the available commentary takes into consideration that there are two types of substantive due process cases in Washington land use. In one type, courts strike down local ordinances, while in the other they enforce the lawful application of …

Declared Plant Control Handbook Recommendations For The Control Of Declared Plants In Western Australia, John R. Peirce, Rachael A. Pratt Jan 2002

Declared Plant Control Handbook Recommendations For The Control Of Declared Plants In Western Australia, John R. Peirce, Rachael A. Pratt

Biosecurity published reports

Sixth Edition.

Reviewed October 2005.

Plants may be "declared" by the Agriculture Protection Board under the Agriculture and Related Resources Protection Act 1976.If a plant is declared, all landholders are obliged to control that plant on their properties. Declarations specifies a category, or categories, for each plant according to the control strategies or objectives which the Agriculture Protection Board believes are appropriate in a particular place.

Among the factors considered in categorising declared plants are:

* the impact of the plant on individuals, agricultural production and the community in general,

* whether it is already established in the area, and …
