General Strain Theory And Social Support: A Study Of African Americans, Jason Alan Lyons Jan 2002

General Strain Theory And Social Support: A Study Of African Americans, Jason Alan Lyons

LSU Master's Theses

Agnew’s (1992) general strain theory (GST) has gained increasing attention and empirical support for the effects of strain on negative emotions and deviant coping. However, previous research provides inconsistent results about (1) the effects of negative emotions on deviant coping, (2) the significance of social support in GST, and (3) gender differences and GST. This paper addresses these issues by testing hypotheses generated from GST and analyzing data collected from a nationally representative sample of African American adults. Results from ordinary least squares regression analyses generally support the hypotheses. First, the effects of strain on deviant coping are fully mediated …

Environmental Law And The Supreme Court: Three Years Later, Richard J. Lazarus Jan 2002

Environmental Law And The Supreme Court: Three Years Later, Richard J. Lazarus

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In my Garrison Lecture three years ago, I surveyed the environmental law decisions of the Supreme Court between 1970 and 1999. I commented on which Justices had been more or less influential in shaping the Court's decisions and, even more provocatively (if not foolishly), sought to "score" the individual Justices on their responsiveness to environmental protection concerns based on their votes cast in a subset of those cases. The broader thesis of the lecture, however, was that there is something distinctively "environmental" about environmental law and that the Court's increasing inability to appreciate that dimension was leading to more poorly-reasoned …

Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider Jan 2002

Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider

LSU Master's Theses

Driving is an important part of daily life in our society. Neurocognitive deficits acquired from a head injury can affect driving ability. Determining when it is safe for a person recovering from a head injury to return to the road can often be difficult. With the risk involved in an on-the-road driving evaluation, effective measures are needed to determine when patients are ready to be evaluated. Some neuropsychological measures have shown promise in this area. The Useful Field of View (UFOV) is one test that has been used successfully with older drivers to predict accident risk. Research has also been …

The Relationship Between Classroom Motivation And Academic Achievement In First And Third Graders, Sheri Coates Broussard Jan 2002

The Relationship Between Classroom Motivation And Academic Achievement In First And Third Graders, Sheri Coates Broussard

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between classroom motivation and academic achievement in first and third graders. The subjects included 122 first grade children and 129 third grade children from a mid-sized, southern city. The total sample was comprised of 251 children, 59% non-white and 57% female. The findings from the current study were consistent with the literature reviewed in that higher levels of mastery motivation and judgment motivation were found to be related to higher grades in third graders. It is important to note, however, that only higher levels of mastery motivation, not judgment motivation, …

The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson Jan 2002

The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson

LSU Master's Theses

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) became widespread in the early 1980’s. At the beginning of the epidemic, HIV/AIDS was affecting mainly gay men. As the disease began to spread, more diverse populations were affected. Now, two decades later, the face of HIV and AIDS has changed. In the year 2000, the Baton Rouge area (which includes the parishes of Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana) had the highest detected rate of HIV/AIDS cases in the state, and the 16th highest detected rate of …

Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal Jan 2002

Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal

LSU Master's Theses

Women experience more weight gain than men postcessation and are more aware of nicotine’s weight suppressing effects than men. Postcessation weight gain in women can be largely accounted for by significant increases in high fat foods from pre- to postcessation. Overeating found in the luteal phase, further compounds the increased caloric intake found postcessation. Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of smoking cessation on macronutrient content and weight gain; and most have relied on self-report data. This study used the Macronutrient Self-Selection Paradigm (MSSP) and Food Preference Questionnaire (FPQ) to assess food intake in 17 women in the luteal …

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr Jan 2002

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr

LSU Master's Theses

Nearly 35,000 ha are used to grow crawfish in southwest and south-central Louisiana, and many of these ponds discharge into impaired water bodies. In 2002, proposed guidelines were published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assigning effluent limitations and standards for some aquaculture production systems and exempting others (e.g. crawfish ponds). This research had three objectives relative to crawfish ponds: develop water discharge models; final drawdown effluent quality and seasonal mass loading of solids and nutrients; and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that could reduce effluent discharge and improve effluent quality. Models for south-central and southwest Louisiana …

The Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902): Development Of The U.S. Army's Counterinsurgency Policy, Frank L. Andrews Jan 2002

The Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902): Development Of The U.S. Army's Counterinsurgency Policy, Frank L. Andrews

LSU Master's Theses

Counterinsurgency is one of the most difficult forms of conflict an army can face. After defeating Spanish forces in Manila during the Spanish-American War, a well-developed insurrection, led by Emilio Aguinaldo, challenged the United States Army for nearly four years. Although the army in 1898 was unprepared for a large-scale, two-front war, it conducted an extremely effective counterinsurgency campaign 7000 miles from home in inhospitable terrain. Despite lacking a formal, written counterinsurgency doctrine, the frontier experiences of the army, orally passed on from one generation of soldiers to the next, provided invaluable lessons that could be applied in the Philippines. …

The Synthesis Of New Biotin Derivatives And Their Bioactivity, Latisha Chanette Johnson Jan 2002

The Synthesis Of New Biotin Derivatives And Their Bioactivity, Latisha Chanette Johnson

LSU Master's Theses

Biotin is an essential growth factor found in all living cells. It functions as a cofactor for a group of coenzymes that catalyze transcarboxylation, decarboxylation, and carboxylation reactions. Acetyl CoA carboxylase catalyzes the first committed and regulated step in fatty acid synthesis in which malonyl CoA is the product. The biotin-dependent enzyme is found in all animals, plants, and bacteria. We studied the kinetic and structural aspects of acetyl CoA carboxylase, and in 1999 we reported the bioactivity and total synthesis of a unique first generation biotin-derived inhibitor of acetyl CoA carboxylase, 1(BP1). Kinetic studies on the activity of E. …

Analysis Of Death Trends In Coroner Cases In East Baton Rouge Parish From January 1, 1991 To December 31, 2001, Gina Ann Dimattia

LSU Master's Theses

Analysis of death trends in a geographic area can provide valuable information regarding the health of the people in that area. Additionally, evaluation of variables such as sex, race, age, and cause of death can aid local health officials in serving the needs of the population. East Baton Rouge Parish is located in southern Louisiana, includes the capital city of Baton Rouge, and has a population of 412,852. An analysis of death cases handled by the Coroner's Office in East Baton Rouge Parish has not been performed until now. This thesis presents results from an analysis of all deaths in …

The Role Of The Parisian Café In The Emergence Of Modern Art: An Analysis Of The Nineteenth Century Café As Social Institution And Symbol Of Modern Art, Karen Marie Dees Jan 2002

The Role Of The Parisian Café In The Emergence Of Modern Art: An Analysis Of The Nineteenth Century Café As Social Institution And Symbol Of Modern Art, Karen Marie Dees

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes the significance of the Paris café in Modern Art. In discussing the social and historical events of mid to late nineteenth century Paris, it establishes the atmosphere in which the first modern artists broke from the formal academy system. The primary focus is two-fold. First, how the café was established in Parisian culture as a social institution and the role this played as a replacement for the Ecole des Beaux Arts and in the formation of a new art movement. Second, how the new artists incorporated the café culture into their art as a representation of modern …

A Screening Assessment Of Dissolved Air Flotation For Control Of Nonindigenous Invasive Species Transported In Shipping Ballast Water, Eng Chong Voon Jan 2002

A Screening Assessment Of Dissolved Air Flotation For Control Of Nonindigenous Invasive Species Transported In Shipping Ballast Water, Eng Chong Voon

LSU Master's Theses

Uncontrolled discharge of ballast water by vessels has been considered one of the main mechanisms for the introduction of aquatic nuisance species (ANS). The typical size of species found ranges from 0.02 to 10,000 micrometer. This wide range of sizes consists of microorganism (protozoa, dinoflagellates, and cholera), planktonic species, plants, insects, other arthropods, worms, mollusks, and vertebrates. These species either remain suspended in ballast water or settle in ballast tank sediments. Providing treatment for ballast water is a challenging task due to space availability of ships and significant magnitude of flow rates and volumes of ballast water. Currently, open ocean …

The Effect Of Experimental Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus On The Adenosine Triphosphate Content And Cellular Permeability Of The Canine Gastric And Jejunal Mucosa, Laura Elizabeth Peycke Jan 2002

The Effect Of Experimental Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus On The Adenosine Triphosphate Content And Cellular Permeability Of The Canine Gastric And Jejunal Mucosa, Laura Elizabeth Peycke

LSU Master's Theses

This study was designed to characterize changes in the content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cellular permeability of gastric and jejunal mucosa during gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Our hypothesis stated that experimental GDV would result in a decrease in ATP content and cellular integrity of the gastric and intestinal mucosa that may improve after decompression and derotation of the stomach. Fifteen medium-to-large mixed-breed male dogs were randomly divided into three groups: GDV dogs, Ischemia dogs and Control dogs. All dogs were maintained on gas anesthesia for 210 minutes. The GDV dogs had a GDV for 120 minutes with a 90-minute period …

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip Jan 2002

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of the present study was to discover whether there is a relationship between locus of control and court attendance. Data were collected from 95 inmates residing in a southern Louisiana jail. It was expected that a person with an internal locus of control would choose to comply with court attendance requirements because of the belief that he may affect the outcome, while another individual with an external locus of control would passively respond through absence because the outcome is believed to be controlled by chance, luck, or fate. The Prison Locus of Control scale was employed to measure …

Utilization Of Rice Bran By Pythium Irregulare For Lipid Production, Hui Zhu Jan 2002

Utilization Of Rice Bran By Pythium Irregulare For Lipid Production, Hui Zhu

LSU Master's Theses

This research investigated the feasibility of utilizing rice bran as feedstock for submerged fermentation of Pythium irregulare to produce fungal lipids, which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) including arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4n6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n3). The fungal nutrient requirements, temperature characterization and growth modeling were determined in glucose-yeast extract media. Sixteen media combinations based on a 24 factorial design with four levels of glucose and yeast extract ranged from 1% to 4% and 0.25% to 1%, respectively, and corresponding carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) ranged from 4 to 64, were examined. The suitable C/N for Pythium irregulare growth ranged from …

Idego, Christopher Michael Stanley Jan 2002

Idego, Christopher Michael Stanley

LSU Master's Theses

My thesis show is sort of a mock manifesto on the ephemeral making of art, especially my art. Automatic drawing and collage are major themes and redundencies that continue to find their way into what I do. I will show the dualities between what is past and what is present hoping to find the integral ingredient that caused the past to be present. I will make the viewer question what he or she believes in. We all know that the reason for the present is because of the events in the past, but do the events of the past hold …

Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis Jan 2002

Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis

LSU Master's Theses

Transverse (Harris) lines are lines of opacity that extend across the medullary cavity in long bones; they are sometimes are also found in irregular bones. Predominantly, Harris lines are seen in radiographs of the tibiae. Many scholars believe that these lines of opacity are caused by nutritional interruptions during growth, while others believe these lines to be indicators of stress recovery, rather than interruption. This study examines the incidence of transverse lines in a Pre-Columbian Costa Rican population, called Vidor, located on the northwest Bay of Culebra. The burials of this population, originally excavated in 1977, contained more than 40 …

The Influence Of Hydrilla Infestation And Drawdown On The Food Habits And Growth Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Torrance D. Mason Jan 2002

The Influence Of Hydrilla Infestation And Drawdown On The Food Habits And Growth Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Torrance D. Mason

LSU Master's Theses

I compared diets and growth rates of age-0 largemouth bass in the Atchafalaya River Basin (Basin), Louisiana, to determine how hydrilla Hydrilla verticillata densities and drawdown influence bass food habits and growth. To assess hydrilla density effects on diet, I compared food habits of age-0 bass collected in high, intermediate, and low hydrilla densities, as well as in Henderson Lake, a semi-isolated portion of the Basin subject to drawdowns in 2001 and 2002 to reduce hydrilla densities. I also compared diets of age-0 bass from sites sampled in 2001 and 2002 that were also sampled in the mid-1970s before hydrilla …

The experiment was conducted at Southeast Research Station in Franklinton, Louisiana between March and June, 2001. The experiment was designed to compare the effects of two methods of manure application on fecal coliform release. Manure application simulating natural deposition by cattle (Treatment A) was compared to that of land application of manure as fertilizer (Treatment B). Application of inorganic fertilizer was used as the control. Each Treatment was applied to three field plots. Simulated rainfalls were conducted on plots …

2001 Louisiana Legislative Special Session: Do We All Read The Same News, Jennifer Bhatia Ledbetter Jan 2002

2001 Louisiana Legislative Special Session: Do We All Read The Same News, Jennifer Bhatia Ledbetter

LSU Master's Theses

This study reviews the newspaper coverage given during the 2001 Louisiana special legislative session. It was convened to raise additional money to fund teacher pay raises through legislation impacting the state’s gambling tax requirements. The seven markets include Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Monroe and Shreveport. The session was a “last resort effort” in response to persistent pleas from educators that had elevated into statewide teacher sickouts. In the fall of 2000 the public voted down new taxes to fund their pay raises. The governor charged his administration to come up with a plan to raise teacher’s …

A Study Of The Poole-Rose Ossuary Ulnae: Demography, Defleshing And Degenerative Joint Disease, Natalie Anne Bodin Jan 2002

A Study Of The Poole-Rose Ossuary Ulnae: Demography, Defleshing And Degenerative Joint Disease, Natalie Anne Bodin

LSU Master's Theses

The Poole-Rose ossuary, a prehistoric Native Canadian population from Ontario, Canada, represents a Late Woodland period communal burial that has been radio-carbon dated to 1550 A.D. +/- 50 years. The location and attributes of this ossuary, a secondary burial deposit, led the site's excavator, Dr. Heather McKillop, to believe that it is a part of the "Feast of the Dead" ceremony. Due to commingling of the individuals, the human remains from this ossuary have been analyzed by element. This thesis examines the ulnae, one of the bones of the forearm, for evidence of degenerative joint disease. Additionally, the thesis includes …

Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom Jan 2002

Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study focuses on Hispanics and violent crime. Previous studies (Krivo and Peterson, 1993, Shihadeh and Flynn, 1996) analyze crime rates among blacks; however, the research on Hispanics is very limited (Massey and Denton, 1992). The majority of sociological studies analyze racial residential segregation in order to explain higher rates of violent crime among blacks. (Peterson and Krivo, 1993; Frey and Farley, 1996.) Most researchers employ the Index of Dissimilarity (D), which measures evenness (distribution of the population), in order to measure segregation. (Fischer and Massey, 2000). In this study, I plan to fill the gap in …
