Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer Jan 2002

Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer

Theses

In the last few years, genomics has profoundly changed research in the biological sciences and in particular in microbiology. Recent studies have demonstrated that comparative genomics is a powerful approach contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolution of microorganisms. Bacterial collections are important resources of microorganisms, however, the potential that genomics has to offer remains to be realised as it is still virtually absent in any study involving strain collections. This feature thus framed the experimental objectives for this study, whose aim was to define the most comprehensive way to apply genomic based methods (high throughput sequencing and bioinformatics) …

Relationship Between Insomnia And Job Satisfaction, Stacy Lynn Taylor

Theses

The disorder of insomnia is seriously effecting every aspect of people's lives including job satisfaction. This study examines the relationship between insomnia and job satisfaction. Subjects for this study included 30 previously diagnosed insomniacs and 30 non-insomniac graduate students. The subjects were asked to complete the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire- short form and demographic sheet. Pearson Chi-square tests were performed to explore possible relationships. There were no statistically significant relationships found between insomnia and the dependent variables of job satisfaction and job stress.

The Relationship Between The "Lies" Christians Believe And Emotional Symptoms Of Anxiety, Anger/Hostility, And Depression, Terry Lee Swan Jan 2002

The Relationship Between The "Lies" Christians Believe And Emotional Symptoms Of Anxiety, Anger/Hostility, And Depression, Terry Lee Swan

Theses

This correlational study examined the relationship between Christian's irrational beliefs (lies believed) and the number of symptoms of the emotional disturbances: anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. Previous studies have shown that a relationship between these variables exists. A total of 55 subjects, 24 male and 31 female, from 3 randomly selected churches volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects completed two questionnaires: The Lies We Believe Questionnaire, developed by Chris Thurman, Ph.D. and A Symptom Questionnaire, developed by Robert Kellner, M.D. The former identifies irrational beliefs ("lies), and the latter identifies the number of symptoms of anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. …

The Influence Of Parenting Styles On Social Phobia In A College Sample, Kimberly Sue Fischer Jan 2002

The Influence Of Parenting Styles On Social Phobia In A College Sample, Kimberly Sue Fischer

Theses

Since researchers have only studied social phobia in the last several decades, the need to identify influencing variables is essential. While most researchers concur that familial factors have an impact on social phobia, the influence of family variables remain under investigation. Many studies have examined the impact of parenting characteristics on social phobia involving individuals in a clinical setting. However, few studies have focused on social phobia in a nonclinical setting with adults. This study explores the relationship between parenting styles of overprotection and rejection with social phobia in a college sample of adults. Subjects for this study were 35 …

Efficacy Of A Pneumatic Oxygen Conserving Device In The Oxygenation Of Copd Patients During Sleep, Ronda Z. Bradley Jan 2002

Efficacy Of A Pneumatic Oxygen Conserving Device In The Oxygenation Of Copd Patients During Sleep, Ronda Z. Bradley

Theses

For the greater than one million Americans who rely on supplemental oxygen for survival, the vast majority of them struggle with ambulatory oxygen sources which restrict their ability to move freely about within and out of their homes. Liquid oxygen sources can provide the smallest and longest lasting ambulatory oxygen supply. However, the cost of the provision on liquid oxygen has historically been cost prohibitive under our current Medicare reimbursement schedule. The HELiOS™ Oxygen System by Puritan-Bennett a division of Mallinckrodt. has developed an oxygen system, which allows for the smallest, lightest weight and longest lasting oxygen system ever developed. …

Relationship Between The Church Involvement And The Self-Esteem In Urban African American Adolescents, Ywinta Jones

Theses

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the level of church involvement and self-esteem in African American adolescents from the area of St. Louis, Missouri. Participants were 58 adolescents who were given two instruments: The Hare Self-esteem Scale and Church Involvement Assessment Scale. The Hare Self-esteem was administered to measure the level of self-esteem. The researcher designed the Church Involvement Assessment Scale to measure the level of involvement in church related activities. The hypothesis was that the adolescents who are more involved in church related activities would tend to have a higher self-esteem than adolescents who are less …

The Adult Student In Higher Education And Training, Kathlee Despain-Rogers Jan 2002

The Adult Student In Higher Education And Training, Kathlee Despain-Rogers

Theses

This thesis will focus on the needs of the adult or nontraditional student. An in-depth look at bow non-traditional students came to be and how higher education is accommodating them today and tomorrow.

Before 1944, adult students were not commonplace on college campuses. At that time even high school graduation was a rare achievement. However, The Servicemen's (and women's) Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as "The GI Bill," changed all that. The Act provided many benefits but it is best known for giving former soldiers, both male and female, a chance at a college education or a degree from …

Pursuit Evasion: The Herding Noncooperative Dynamic Game-The Stochastic Model, Pushkin Kachroo, Samy A. Shedied, H. Vanlandingham

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This article proposes a solution to the herding problem, a class of pursuit evasion problem in a stochastic framework. The problem involves a "pursuer" agent trying to herd a stochastically moving "evader" agent into a pen. The problem is stated in terms of allowable sequential actions of the two agents. The solution is obtained by applying the principles of stochastic dynamic programming. Three algorithms for solution are presented with their accompanying results.

Arsenic Trioxide Has Additive Cytotoxic Effects On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Line With Taxanes, Canfeza Sezgi̇n, Ulus Ali̇ Şanli, Rüçhan Uslu, Erdem Göker

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women and an important cause of both morbidity and mortality. Although long-term disease-free survival is offered to women with early stage disease by current treatment modality, some, 30-40% of patients will have metastatic disease. Treatment of patients with metastatic disease is a great challenge for oncologists. Therefore, new drugs and therapeutic options for women with metastatic breast cancer are urgently required. Arsenical compounds have cytotoxic effects on several cancer cell lines including promyelocytic leukemia, esophageal carcinoma, megakaryocytic leukemia, and malignant lymphocytic cell lines. In addition, recent studies showed that arsenic trioxide (As_2O_3) …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NO in the pathogenesis of lung injury associated with pancreatitis, and the relation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Forty Wistar male rats were divided into control or pancreatitis groups, and treated with saline, L-arginine (100 mg/kg i.v.), NO donor, or N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (10 mg/kg i.v.), an inhibitor of NO synthase. Pancreatitis was induced in rats intravenously via the administration of cerulein (10 µg/kg/h) for 4 h). Eight hours after the induction of acute pancreatitis (AP), amylase and lipase in plasma significantly increased in all animals in …

The Problem Of Lipid Exchange In Vessel Walls In Insulin Deficit, Gulchekhra M. Irgasheva, Lyudmila Sergeevna Klemesheva, Karim Tadjibaevich Almatov

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It has been revealed that in alloxane diabetes the content of the main phospholipids - phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidyletanolamine and phosphatidyl-phosphatidylinosite -decreases in the cells of the vascular wall, whereas the content of the methyl ethers of the fatty acids is not changed, and the content of the fractions of lipids (monoglycerides, diglycerides, triglycerides, cholesterol, free fatty acids, and cholesterol ethers) and phospholipids (phosphatidylserine, cardiolipin, lysophosphatidyletanolamine, lysocardiolipin, sphingomyelin, phosphatide acid and lysophosphatide acid) increase. The depth of these changes correlates with the heaviness of the pathological process.

Cabbagetown: (Re) Placing Identity, Jeremy W. Crampton Jan 2002

Cabbagetown: (Re) Placing Identity, Jeremy W. Crampton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Cabbagetown is one of Atlanta's oldest industrial settlements, built for employees of the South's first cotton processing mill in 1881 during the heyday of southeastern textile mills. Today its identity and sense of place is highly contested. Originally a white working class community oriented around the mill, today it is undergoing gentrification -- the mill has been converted into gated lofts, and there are few long-term residents still left. Remarkably, the neighborhood is still distinct and unusual. It's almost as if a sense of history has settled into the neighborhood's bones and imbued its new residents with a …

Oxidized Ldl Density Lipoprotein Antibodies And Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein-Containing Immune Complexes: Characteristics And Pathogenic Significance In Diabetes, Daniel H. Atchley Jan 2002

Oxidized Ldl Density Lipoprotein Antibodies And Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein-Containing Immune Complexes: Characteristics And Pathogenic Significance In Diabetes, Daniel H. Atchley

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Mounting evidence suggests that two major vascular complications of diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and nephropathy, are pathogenically analogous processes, with atherosclerosis occurring primarily in the microvasculature and nephropathy involving the microvasculature. Additionally, several lines of evidence point to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) as a major participant in both processes. OxLDL is found deposited in both types of vascular lesions, and appears to influence several events. It causes influx of macrophages, which ingest the oxLDL and are transformed into foam cells - a key component of atherosclerosis and glomerulosclerosis. OxLDL also appears to promote the proliferation of smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis …
