Phonological And Lexical Characteristics Of Late Talking Children : A Longitudinal Perspective, Elizabeth A. Wlodzimierski Jan 2002

Phonological And Lexical Characteristics Of Late Talking Children : A Longitudinal Perspective, Elizabeth A. Wlodzimierski

Honors Capstones

During the first three years of life, there is a developmental link between phonology and the lexicon. This study examines the relationship between phonological and lexical characteristics of late-talking children. Four late-talking children were followed longitudinally in this study at three measurement points: the initial evaluation (24 to 27 months), 30 months, and 36 months. Measures of phonetic inventory size and composition, vocabulary size, mean length of utterance in words, and number of different words were obtained at each measurement. The results indicated that asynchronous patterns were present between the children's phonology and expressive lexicon. One child still showed asynchrony …

An Explanation Of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Erica Poole Jan 2002

An Explanation Of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Erica Poole

Honors Capstones

Through a review of literature, this paper will provide an explanation of multiple chemical sensitivity. Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is characterized by a low-level exposure to environmental chemicals resulting in multi organ symptoms reported by the patient. The diagnosis of MCS is difficult to come about because MCS is unknown to many medical professionals or is not recognized as an illness by others. Also, there exists no single diagnostic test to confirm multiple chemical sensitivity. The etiology of MCS is unknown and often can cause great debate between being a physiological disorder or a psychological disorder or a combination of …

Are Curricula That Combine Operations Management And Information Systems Adequately Preparing Their Students For The Workforce?, David Silva

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study is to assess the perceptions of recent alumni on how well a curriculum that combines operations management and information systems prepared them for the workforce. To address our research question, a web-based survey was developed. Our findings seem to indicate that the more recent graduates in our department felt the most adequately prepared for both general business and technical skills. This may mean that our department is continually improving their curriculum over time. Overall, students felt at least moderately prepared for most of the specific skills we studied. Our methodology can be broadly applied to …

Extraction Of Silymarin Compounds From Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed Using Hot, Liquid Water As The Solvent, J. F. Alvarez Barreto, D. Julie Carrier, E. C. Clausen Jan 2002

Extraction Of Silymarin Compounds From Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed Using Hot, Liquid Water As The Solvent, J. F. Alvarez Barreto, D. Julie Carrier, E. C. Clausen

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

High-value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water is an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A, and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 50°C, 70°C, 85°C and 100°C water as a function of time. For taxifolin, silychristin, silybinin A, and silybinin B, …

Identifying Safety Strategies For On-Farm Grain Bins Using Risk Analysis, Raymond S. Avery, Dylan P. Carpenter, Thomas A. Costello Jan 2002

Identifying Safety Strategies For On-Farm Grain Bins Using Risk Analysis, Raymond S. Avery, Dylan P. Carpenter, Thomas A. Costello

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The potential for grain bin accidents exists each year on Arkansas farms and farms across the nation. The trend toward increasing utilization of on-farm grain drying and storage could lead to an increase in grain bin accidents. The sharp contrast between a safe, efficient operation and one that leads to injury or death can be represented as sets of farmer-decisions and subsequent chance events. A model was constructed to define the risk associated with grain bin entry and in-bin activity so that safety interventions could be identified and implemented to reduce the probability of injury and death. A survey was …

Congressional Authority To Induce Waivers Of State Sovereign Immunity: The Conditional Spending Power (And Beyond), Michael T. Gibson Jan 2002

Congressional Authority To Induce Waivers Of State Sovereign Immunity: The Conditional Spending Power (And Beyond), Michael T. Gibson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Since 1997, the Court has issued almost a dozen Eleventh Amendment decisions, each of which expanded State sovereign immunity. Meanwhile, the Court's conservative, pro-State justices have discussed what Justice Anthony Kennedy has said is the most important federalism issue before the Court: Congressional authority to place conditions on grants of federal funds.

This article unites those two apparently independent doctrines. It contends that the Conditional Spending Power, as developed by Rehnquist, Scalia, and O'Connor, permits Congress to condition a State's receipt of federal funds upon that State's waiver of immunity to suits regarding how those funds are spent. The article …

Variations In The Relationship Between The Frequency Content Of Emg Signals And The Rate Of Torque Development In Voluntary And Elicited Contractions, Martin Bilodeau, Jeff Houck, Tyler Cuddeford, Shreela Sharma, Nora Riley Jan 2002

Variations In The Relationship Between The Frequency Content Of Emg Signals And The Rate Of Torque Development In Voluntary And Elicited Contractions, Martin Bilodeau, Jeff Houck, Tyler Cuddeford, Shreela Sharma, Nora Riley

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Our purpose was to characterize the relationship between EMG mean power frequency (MPF) or median frequency (MF) and rate of torque development in voluntary ballistic and electrically elicited isometric contractions. Twenty-three healthy adults participated in two sets of experiments performed on elbow flexor muscles. For Experiment 1, subjects were asked to generate voluntary ballistic contractions by reaching four different target torque levels (20, 40, 60 and 100% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)) as fast as they could. For Experiment 2, electrical (M-waves) and mechanical (twitches) responses to electrical stimulation of the nerves supplying the biceps brachii and brachioradialis muscles …

Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista Jan 2002

Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The most promising technologies to remove perchlorate from water are ion exchange and biological reduction. Although successful, ion exchange only separates perchlorate from water; it does not eliminate it from the environment. The waste streams from these systems contain the caustic or saline regenerant solutions used in the process as well as high levels of perchlorate. Biological reduction could be used to treat the regenerant waste solutions from the ion exchange process. A treatment scheme, combining ion exchange and biodegradation, is proposed to completely remove perchlorate from the environment. Perchlorate-laden resins generate brines containing salt concentrations up to 6% or …

The Impact Of State Prohibitions Of Punitive Damages On Libel Litigation: An Empirical Analysis, Dennis Hale

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article explores the role of punitive damages in media libel cases by measuring the quantity and quality of libel appeals for a ten-year period in states with and without punitive damages. Specifically, the Article identifies appellate court decisions for media libel cases over a ten year period from 1986 to 1995, comparing five states with punitive damages (Alabama, New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee) to five states without punitive damages (Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Oregon and Washington). Each appeal of a federal or state media libel case was coded for the following characteristics: year, whether the media won …

Algal Blooms Reduce The Uptake Of Toxic Methylmercury In Freshwater Food Webs, Paul C. Pickhardt, Carol L. Folt, Celia Y. Chen, Bjoern Klaue, Joel D. Blum Jan 2002

Algal Blooms Reduce The Uptake Of Toxic Methylmercury In Freshwater Food Webs, Paul C. Pickhardt, Carol L. Folt, Celia Y. Chen, Bjoern Klaue, Joel D. Blum

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mercury accumulation in fish is a global public health concern, because fish are the primary source of toxic methylmercury to humans. Fish from all lakes do not pose the same level of risk to consumers. One of the most intriguing patterns is that potentially dangerous mercury concentrations can be found in fish from clear, oligotrophic lakes whereas fish from greener, eutrophic lakes often carry less mercury. In this study, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that increasing algal biomass reduces mercury accumulation at higher trophic levels through the dilution of mercury in consumed algal cells. Under bloom dilution, as algal biomass …

Closed Industrial Water Cycles, Celine Bellec Jan 2002

Closed Industrial Water Cycles, Celine Bellec

Theses

Due to this decade of rapid growth, Ireland has to face difficulties created by an increase use of water as well as a decreasing water quality due to sewage discharges, agriculture and industries.

The awareness of the danger to the environment, resulting from the over extraction and stricter discharge regulations, has caused the cost of freshwater and wastewater treatment to rise. Therefore there is a growing interest in the manufacturing industries to reduce both freshwater consumption and wastewater production by improving the efficiency of their processes.

Three industrial sectors were studied following the same methodology: the pharmaceutical sector, the textiles …

Disease Management And Liability In The Human Genome Era, Larry I. Palmer Jan 2002

Disease Management And Liability In The Human Genome Era, Larry I. Palmer

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The completion of a rough draft of the Human Genome presents both tremendous potential for improvements in health care delivery and challenges to providing appropriate incentives that will bring forth new treatments while protecting individuals and groups from genetic discrimination. As "genetics" becomes an integral part of health care delivery, there are no existing coherent legal doctrines for balancing the risks and benefits of this technological and scientific achievement. Developing a coherent legal approach to these risks and benefits requires a reexamination of the purposes of the liability doctrines that govern the management of disease processes. At the moment, a …

The Investor Confidence Game, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2002

The Investor Confidence Game, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Academic discussions of securities policy often assume that investors are hyperrational and distrustful actors who do not need the protections of the securities laws to avoid being defrauded. The time has come to recognize the limitations of this assumption and to consider as well the possibility and implications of investor trust. Experienced policymakers and businesspeople (and certainly experienced con artists) have long known that trust is a potent force in explaining and manipulating investor behavior. They are right. They are right to believe that investor confidence-meaning investor trust-is important to the market. They are right to think that trust has …
