Psychiatric Admission In A General Hospital: Patients Profile And Patterns Of Service Utilization Over A Decade, Mahdi S. Abumadini, Sheik I. Rahim

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of admitted patients and the patterns of their service utilization over a decade from March 1988 to March 1998. METHODS: Prospective data compilation using a structured questionnaire, hospital records and follow-up observations at King Fahd Hospital of the University in Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: A total of 1366 patients (683 of each sex) had 2217 admissions in 10 years. By the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition criteria, 19.5% had schizophrenia, 15.2% bipolar disorder, 9.9% depressive episodes, 8.6% acute and transient psychotic disorders, 7.7% adjustment disorders and 7.6% dissociative disorders. …

Accidental Tricyclic Antidepressant Poisoning In A 2 Year-Old Boy, Parameswaran M. Nair, Alexander Chacko, Poothirikovil Venugopalan Jan 2002

Accidental Tricyclic Antidepressant Poisoning In A 2 Year-Old Boy, Parameswaran M. Nair, Alexander Chacko, Poothirikovil Venugopalan

Neurosciences

We present a 2-year old boy with accidental ingestion of a tricyclic antidepressant and outline the clinical features, management and prevention. Despite ingesting a high dose of amitriptyline (20mg/kg) and showing serum levels above the toxic range (1380 ng/ml), our patient did not develop any life threatening complications. Gastric lavage followed by instillation of activated charcoal, repeated at 6 hours, along with supportive measures led to complete recovery in 48 hours. As children are often exposed to tricyclic antidepressant poisoning, their carers and physicians need to be well aware of the disorder and its management.

Does Ascorbic Acid Protect Against Vanadium Neurotoxicity In Different Regions Of Rat Brain?, Fatum A. El-Shaari, Syed S. Haider, Mustafa M. El-Fakhri, Kilani M. Ghawarsha

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: Ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant and protects against lipid peroxidation in cerebral membrane. The objective of the study was to investigate protective effects of ascorbic acid on lipid peroxidative damage and perturbation of enzymes, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in discrete regions of rat brain after vanadium exposure. METHODS: This study was carried out at Al-Arab Medical University, Benghazi, Libya, from 1995 to 1996. To investigate the effect of this vitamin on vanadium neurotoxicity in brain, adult rats were injected with L-ascorbic acid (1.0 g/kg body weight) and elemental vanadium (2.5 mg/kg body weight) alone or concomitantly …

Firefighting : A Female Perspective, Shelby K. Willis Jan 2002

Firefighting : A Female Perspective, Shelby K. Willis

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Firefighting has been a paid profession for less than half a century. Before that, volunteer departments handled the fire emergencies and in some locations still do today. The fire service, whose history goes back to the 1600s, developed and employed techniques that evolved into advanced training and technology now considered "cutting edge." As technology evolves, traditions of the fire service remain stable and resistant to change.

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The years 1933-1945 were filled with great turmoil and inconsistency throughout Germany. As early as 1933, laws were enacted and passed that set in motion the sequence of events that would lead to World War II and the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler's rise to power in a country torn by inner conflict subsequently gave authority to those who adhered to the principles of eugenics, euthanasia, sterilizations, and other methods of"population control." By the late 1930s, the goal of public support of establishing a "master race" was widely accepted and lauded in Germany. While Hitler's influence and power was considerable, his master …

Ecological Health Movement In Lebanon : An Overview Of Alternative Culture In A Developing Country, Mark Perry Jan 2002

Ecological Health Movement In Lebanon : An Overview Of Alternative Culture In A Developing Country, Mark Perry

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

An ecological health movement has emerged in Lebanon in reaction to problems in the mainstream health care system, to environmental conditions affecting agriculture and food sources, and to urbanization. The movement parallels similar developments in other countries. It depends primarily on practitioners of macrobiotics and organic agriculture, and is centered on the belief that good health is obtained through observance of dietary rules requiring consumption of organic food. The practice of these rules necessitates in Lebanon a reversal of trends toward centralization and urbanization in order to reestablish ties between consumers and farmers. It also implies a renaissance of organic …

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the presence of intracellular inclusions, Lewy bodies, and Lewy neurites, in the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and several other brain regions. Filamentous α-synuclein is the major component of these deposits and its aggregation is believed to play an important role in Parkinson's disease and several other neurodegenerative diseases. Two homologous proteins, β- and γ-synucleins, are also abundant in the brain. The synucleins are natively unfolded proteins. β-Synuclein, which lacks 11 central hydrophobic residues compared with its homologs, exhibited the properties of a random coil, whereas α- and γ-synucleins were slightly more …
