Family Preservation In Child Welfare: Its Base And Its Future, Marianne Berry Jan 2002

Family Preservation In Child Welfare: Its Base And Its Future, Marianne Berry

Journal of Family Strengths

This is the eleventh issue of the Family Preservation Journal, and we have chosen to focus this special issue on the use of family preservation services in child welfare. While family preservation services, as a philosophy and as a service model, are provided to families in a variety of service settings and sectors, including juvenile justice and mental health arenas, they have their basis and origin in services to children and families. We think it is time, in this 11th issue of the Journal, to take stock of the state of family preservation services in child welfare and assess where …

A Case Study Of An Agency's Three Family Preservation Contracts, Mark Ezell Jan 2002

A Case Study Of An Agency's Three Family Preservation Contracts, Mark Ezell

Journal of Family Strengths

This article presents a case study of a nonprofit child welfare agency that delivered family preservation services under three different purchase-of-service (POS) contracts. The research specifically focuses on how certain POS contract provisions and reimbursement rates influence the delivery of family preservation services. The three contacts examined differed on criteria, such as reimbursement mechanism, service volume, definition of clientele, and reimbursement rate. The study found that as reimbursement rates decline and as administrative costs increase, the service provider struggled with cash flow, staffing, fundraising, and service provision, among other things. It is concluded that contract-related resources, policies, and procedures impact …

The Sovereignty Continuum And Conflict Resolution, Dennis Cusack Jan 2002

The Sovereignty Continuum And Conflict Resolution, Dennis Cusack

UC Law SF International Law Review

The history of Tibet's relations with China is itself an interesting study in notions of sovereignty, autonomy and "suzerainty," the label the British gave to their view of Tibet's status at the turn of the last century. Under the 1988 Strasbourg Proposal, the Dalai Lama offered to negotiate a status for Tibet under which Tibet would surrender its right to formal sovereignty, defer to China on matters of foreign relations and defense, but retain control over all domestic matters. This article offers examples and patterns of cases in which conflicts over sovereignty have been successfully resolved through non-violent conflict resolution.

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

We conducted a randomized, triple-blinded home drinking water intervention trial to determine if a large study could be undertaken while successfully blinding participants. Households were randomized 50:50 to use externally identical active or sham treatment devices. We measured the effectiveness of blinding of participants by using a published blinding index in which values >0.5 indicate successful blinding. The principal health outcome measured was "highly credible gastrointestinal illness" (HCGI). Participants (n=236) from 77 households were successfully blinded to their treatment assignment. At the end of the study, the blinding index was 0.64 (95% confidence interval 0.51-0.78). There were 103 episodes of …

Differentiating Between Forgiveness Of Self And Others, Dawn E. Glasener Jan 2002

Differentiating Between Forgiveness Of Self And Others, Dawn E. Glasener

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between self-forgiveness, forgiveness of others, and mental health. It also explored how self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others differ. Participants (N = 108) were recruited from a medium-sized Midwestern Catholic university. Participants answered self-report questionnaires concerning forgiveness of self and others, dispositional predictor variables (guilt, shame, religiousness, self-consciousness), and mental health (anger, depression, self-esteem). As hypothesized, self-forgiveness was negatively related to depression and self-consciousness and positively related to self-esteem. Forgiveness of others was negatively related to state anger, trait anger, and depression. Both self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others contributed uniquely to the prediction of depression. Furthermore, …
