Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means Jan 2002

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Iron complex chemistry that opens a new door to the medicinal and pharmaceutical worlds is the aim of this research. Specifically, ortho-quinone methide moieties are intermediates in several antitumor drugs and have been identified as bioreductive alkylators of DNA. In our research, a class of iron compounds has been targeted to resemble these quinone methides. It is hoped that these new compounds could be modified to provide a window of opportunity toward the discovery of a selective mode of drug delivery. We have focused our efforts on generating a reactive transition metal complexed 5-membered ring analog of o-quinone methide based …

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman Jan 2002

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

A decline in Northwest Arkansas's native plant population has occurred over the past 50 years, as documented by the U.S. Forest Service in the Ozark-Ouachita Highlands Assessment. This decline has been caused by increased human development in natural areas and the replacement of native plants with exotic, non-native plants. As a result, a generation has grown up not knowing what an Ozark wake Robin trillium (Trillium pusillum var. ozarkanum) or Blood root (Sanguinaria canadensis) Look like, because these plants are difficult to find in nature, are not commonly grown in designed landscapes, and are Largely unavailable in garden centers. The …

The Role Of World Trade Organizations In Settling Trade Disputes Between The United States And The European Union, Erin Walker Jan 2002

The Role Of World Trade Organizations In Settling Trade Disputes Between The United States And The European Union, Erin Walker

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Description of Topic: In settling trade disputes, members of the World Trade Organization use a dispute settlement mechanism set forth in the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations. This multilateral system of settling disputes is implemented if a member believes other members are violating trade rules. Disputes arise when countries adopt policies that break the WTO agreements or that cause them to fail to fulfill obligations. Dispute settlement procedures have existed under many different trade agreements. While current processes are more effective than those of past agreements, they still lack credibility and effectiveness. Research and Results: The United States and the …

A Three Dimensional Model For The Inclusion Of Children With Disabilities, Kimberly G. Griffith Ph.D., Mark J. Cooper Ph.D., Ravic P. Ringlaben Jan 2002

A Three Dimensional Model For The Inclusion Of Children With Disabilities, Kimberly G. Griffith Ph.D., Mark J. Cooper Ph.D., Ravic P. Ringlaben

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The main thrust of preparation for inclusion has been to prepare the general education teacher as well as the student with exceptionalities for this educational initiative. Students without disabilities are often not the prevailing focus in these efforts. This model is an archetype that enables peers to understand, accept, and care for their classmates with exceptionalities. Students acquire knowledge about disabilities, skills are developed that help them interact appropriately, and activities are provided that influence more positive thoughts and behaviors among all students. A circle is used as a metaphor to explain the relationship of individuals in the class. The …

Predicting Oral Reading Miscues, Jack Mostow, Joseph Beck, S. Vanessa Winter, Shaojun Wang Jan 2002

Predicting Oral Reading Miscues, Jack Mostow, Joseph Beck, S. Vanessa Winter, Shaojun Wang

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper explores the problem of predicting specific reading mistakes, called miscues, on a given word. Characterizing likely miscues tells an automated reading tutor what to anticipate, detect, and remediate. As training and test data, we use a database of over 100,000 miscues transcribed by University of Colorado researchers. We explore approaches that exploit different sources of predictive power: the uneven distribution of words in text, and the fact that most miscues are real words. We compare the approaches’ ability to predict miscues of other readers on other text. A simple rote method does best on the most frequent 100 …

Power Of Pregnancy: Examining Constitutional Rights In A Gestational Surrogacy Contract, Alayna Ohs Jan 2002

Power Of Pregnancy: Examining Constitutional Rights In A Gestational Surrogacy Contract, Alayna Ohs

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Modern technology has changed the way we look at pregnancy. Some parties seeking to utilize new technologies have entered into gestational surrogacy contracts, where a genetically unrelated woman acts as a surrogate, gestating an implanted embryo. While surrogacy contracts allow many people to parent in situations that might not otherwise be possible, they often fail to account for the important Constitutional interests of the gestational surrogate. This note argues that the idea of motherhood must be reconceputalized in the gestational surrogacy contract, so that the rights accorded to the surrogate are recognized as rights distinct from those of the "mother." …

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2000 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Carter K. F. Chow, Sarah K. L. Chow Jan 2002

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2000 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Carter K. F. Chow, Sarah K. L. Chow

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Study, the fifteenth in a series, tabulates and analyzes the voting behavior of the United States Supreme Court during the 2000 Term. The analysis is designed to determine whether individual Justices and the Court as a whole are voting more "conservatively," more "liberally," or about the same when compared with past Terms. This Term's survey shows mixed results, but suggests slight liberal movement for the Court as a whole, following last Term's conservative voting trend. The Court voted more liberally in six of the ten categories of the Study this Term compared to last Term. However, the strength of …

Should We Have Faith In The Faith-Based Initiative: A Constitutional Analysis Of President Bush's Charitable Choice Plan, Andrea Pallios Jan 2002

Should We Have Faith In The Faith-Based Initiative: A Constitutional Analysis Of President Bush's Charitable Choice Plan, Andrea Pallios

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Note addresses the question of the constitutionality of President Bush's charitable choice initiative. Under this plan, the federal government would provide funding to faith-based organizations that provide community services. The constitutional question is difficult to assess for two reasons. First, most Supreme Court Establishment Clause cases address federal funding of religious schools, not charities. The Supreme Court has only considered the funding of religious charities twice, and only once during the 20th century. Neither of these cases is dispositive in the case of charitable choice. Second, over the past thirty years, the Supreme Court has used a variety of …

Information Is The Key To Patient Empowerment, Robert John Kane Jan 2002

Information Is The Key To Patient Empowerment, Robert John Kane

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Mr. Kane's paper examines the role of patients to ensure that they have both the knowledge and power to direct their health care choices. The evolving health care market place is discussed to emphasize the increased importance of individual involvement in health decision making. A checklist sets forth questions which a patient should ask of herself and of her provider before entering into health care decisions.

The Legal Liability Regime: How Well Is It Doing In Assuring Quality, Accounting For Costs, And Coping With An Evolving Reality In The Health Care Marketplace?, James F. Blumstein Jan 2002

The Legal Liability Regime: How Well Is It Doing In Assuring Quality, Accounting For Costs, And Coping With An Evolving Reality In The Health Care Marketplace?, James F. Blumstein

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Professor Blumstein's timely article deals with two competing paradigms that provide the poles in the spectrum of legal liability regimes. The "professional" or "scientific" model of liability assumes a rigidly normative approach to medical practice while the second more recent paradigm reflects the principles of marketplace economics in considering cost and resource availability to determine quality of care standards. Professor Blumstein concludes that the traditional approach to determining legal liability is being eroded by both the economics of managed care and the recent emphasis on systemic management of health care to promote patient safety, and that the traditional regime will …

Research Proposal: Effects Of Class Attendance On Overall Grades, Sarah Seay Jan 2002

Research Proposal: Effects Of Class Attendance On Overall Grades, Sarah Seay

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

One research inquiry that comes to question is whether school attendance has an effect on overall grades made by each student. This question comes to mind for numerous reasons. If students do not miss school does this mean they get better grades because they are learning more or because of their dedication and motivation and low absence levels. Is it that students who miss numerous days of school do not care about their grades or that their grades are lower because they do poorly on tests and assignments?
