Project Towards No Drug Abuse: A Review Of The Findings And Future Directions, Alan W. Stacy, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Objective: To provide a review of the evidence from 3 experimental trials of Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND), a senior high-school-based drug abuse prevention program. Methods: Theoretical concepts, subjects, designs, hypotheses, findings, and conclusions of these trials are presented. A total of 2,468 high school youth from 42 schools in southern California were surveyed. Results: The Project TND curriculum shows reductions in the use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, hard drugs, weapon carrying, and victimization. Most of these results were replicated across the 3 trials. Conclusion: Project TND is an effective drug and violence prevention program for older teens, at least for …

Medtextus: An Ontology-Enhanced Medical Portal, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen Jan 2002

Medtextus: An Ontology-Enhanced Medical Portal, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper we describe MedTextus, an online medical search portal with dynamic search and browse tools. To search for information, MedTextus lets users request synonyms and related terms specifically tailored to their query. A mapping algorithm dynamically builds the query context based on the UMLS ontology and then selects thesaurus terms that fit this context. Users can add these terms to their query and meta-search five medical databases. To facilitate browsing, the search results can be reviewed as a list of documents per database, as a set of folders into which all the documents are automatically categorized based on …

Glycogen Resynthesis And Recovery From Exercise: Effects Of Very-Long Chain Acyl-Coenzyme, A Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Kyle E. Johnson Jan 2002

Glycogen Resynthesis And Recovery From Exercise: Effects Of Very-Long Chain Acyl-Coenzyme, A Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Kyle E. Johnson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Disorders of fatty acid metabolism pose a variety of problems including hypoglycemia, muscle weakness, muscle cramping, rhabdomyolysis, and, in the most severe cases, death. Individuals with a deficiency of very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD ), the enzyme initiating the oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids, are particularly prone to exercised-induced declines in muscle function because oft he importance of very-long-chain fatty acids to energy metabolism in exercise. The purpose of this project was to study muscle glycogen resynthesis in the recovery from high intensity exercise in VLCAD deficient mice. Recovery of skeletal muscle function (gastrocnemius) following exercise is not as rapid in …

Effect Of Charge On The Deposition Of Electrostatically Charged Inhalable Aerosol In Lung Model, Divey Saini, C. U. Yurteri, N. Grable, Robert A. Sims, Malay K. Mazumder Jan 2002

Effect Of Charge On The Deposition Of Electrostatically Charged Inhalable Aerosol In Lung Model, Divey Saini, C. U. Yurteri, N. Grable, Robert A. Sims, Malay K. Mazumder

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Inhalable drugs are widely used for treating lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis. The aerosol particles in these inhalable drugs may be charged electrostatically. The deposition of these inhaled therapeutic aerosol particles in the different regions of the lung depends on the particle aerodynamic diameter, electrostatic charge distribution, particulate number density, breathing rate, aerodynamics of the lung, ambient temperature, and relative humidity (RH). The primary mechanisms for lung deposition of inhaled particles are impaction, gravitational settling, diffusion, interception, and electrostatic attraction. To simulate lung deposition, electrostatically charged aerosol particles are introduced through a throat section into a …

Stemborer Parasitism By Cotesia Sesamiae And Strurmiopsis Parasitica And An Assessment Of The Need To Introduce Cotesia Flavipes Into Zimbabwe, Peter Chinwada Jan 2002

Stemborer Parasitism By Cotesia Sesamiae And Strurmiopsis Parasitica And An Assessment Of The Need To Introduce Cotesia Flavipes Into Zimbabwe, Peter Chinwada

All PhD Dissertations

Stemboreres are major pests of maize and sorghum in Zimbabwe. An analysis of the research work on cereal stemborers in the country revealed several gaps for which information is required. Thus, as a way of bridging the identified information gaps, the studies reported in this thesis were conducted mainly to provide information on the distribution, abundance and seasonal occurrence of stemborers and their natural enemies, parasitoid seasonal carryover mechanisms and parasitoid biology, and to assess the need for the introduction of the exotic larval end parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The seasonal occurrence of cereal stemborers and their natural …
