Soybean Glutaredoxin Gene Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil Ii, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic

Oxidizing agents are a normal product of aerobic metabolism and may also be encountered from environmental sources. Aluminum is one proposed source of environmental oxidative stress in plants, and is a major component of soils and an inhibitor of plant growth. Plant cells have evolved universal mechanisms to mediate oxidative stress including the enzyme glutaredoxin, which utilizes a disulfide oxidation-reduction mechanism to detoxify free radicals. A preliminary study suggested that the soybean glutaredoxin gene is expressed preferentially in roots and stems of soybean seedlings in response to toxic levels of Al in soils. While traditional teaching methods (e.g., real-time, synchronous lectures) have proven effective for training future engineers, the Internet provides an avenue to reinforce the material and augment student learning, comprehension, and retention of material. This paper presents the integration and assessment of a library of interactive instructional modules specifically for a senior-level undergraduate elective course in civil engineering. An ongoing, comprehensive assessment process was implemented in the fall 1999 semester. The results of this quantitative assessment indicate that the use of well designed and pedagogically sound Internet-based supplemental modules provide students with a better understanding of course material. Modeling The Effects Of Reservoir Competence Decay And Demographic Turnover In Lyme Disease Ecology, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld

Lyme disease risk is related to the abundance of infected nymphal ticks, which in turn depends on the abundance and reservoir competence of wild hosts. Reservoir competence of a host (i.e., probability that an infected host will infect a feeding vector) often declines over time after inoculation, and small mammalian reservoirs typically undergo rapid population growth during the period when vector ticks feed. These processes can affect disease risk in the context of site-specific tick abundance and host community composition. We modeled the effects of reservoir decay and host demographic turnover on Lyme disease risk using a simple yearly difference …

The Long-Term Clinical Prognosis In Patients With Anterior Wall And Non-Anterior Wall Acute Myocardial Infarction Referred To Primary Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, Mingzhong Zhao, Dayi Hu, Tianchang Li, Sanqing Jia

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Objective: To investigate the long-term clinical prognosis in patients with anterior wall acute myocardial infarction (AW-AMI) and non AW-AMI (NAW-AMI) referred to primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (P-PTCA). Methods: 287 patients with AMI who underwent P-PTCA were divided into AW-AMI group (142 cases) and NAW AMI group (145 cases) according to different sites of AMI. The baseline characteristics and coronary artery lesions of patients were analysed. The primary end points were in-hospital mortality and the major cardiovascular events (MACE) during a mean 17.3±9.8 months follow-up including the occurrences of non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal congestive heart failure, revascularization of target vessels …
