Is The Ozone Hole Over Your Classroom?, Eugene Cordero Jan 2002

Is The Ozone Hole Over Your Classroom?, Eugene Cordero

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

First year university science students are surveyed about their understanding of the ozone layer, ozone depletion and the effect of ozone depletion on Australia. Although students seem to understand the basic function of the ozone layer, over 65% of students incorrectly believe that the ozone hole is over Australia, and over 90% of students incorrectly believe that the ozone hole is present during the summer. Together these ideas seem to explain why nearly 75% of students blame the ozone hole for Australia’s high rate of skin cancer. Survey results also indicate that students seem confused about global warming, and the …

The Role Of Courts In Health Care Rationing: The German Model, Timothy Stoltzfus Jost Jan 2002

The Role Of Courts In Health Care Rationing: The German Model, Timothy Stoltzfus Jost

Scholarly Articles

Virtually every country in the world is currently attempting to find ways to ration health care services in order to control exploding health care costs. In some countries the courts play a role in overseeing the rationing of health care. This article examines the role that the courts play in the United States in health care rationing in various contexts and programs. It then goes on to present the German social courts as an alternative model for judicial oversight of health care rationing that is both responsive to the rights of health care consumers and professionals and sensitive to the …

A New Megalonychid Sloth From The Late Wisconsinan Of The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Rega, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

An unusually well preserved skull, mandible, and indisputably associated post-cranial elements of new sloth, Acratocnus (Miocnus), were recovered from a cave in Jaragua National Park, Dominican Republic. The animal died lying in a rimstone pool and was rapidly coated with a thin calcite patina. We have documented a late Wisconsinan age for this specimen by inorganic 14C radiometric dating of the patina, with supporting data on the carbon systematics of the speleothems in this cave. This sloth is described as a new species on the basis of the distinctive morphology and relative size of cranial and mandibular features. We consider …

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil. Jan 2002

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

The tensions between religions and political systems have been evident in intellectual and cultural contexts throughout human experience. In past ages, there has been a propensity for each culture or religion to assume that it embodied the best in every aspect of the human order. There is no longer any excuse for such narrowness spawned of ignorance to dominate the thinking of educated people. Yet mere tolerance of other approaches to the common challenges of humanity will not provide security for all, especially for minorities within a culture or for weaker societies in a given region striving to maintain their …

The Total Talent Portfolio: Using Different Data To Gain A More Holistic View Of Our Learners, Steven M. Lysenko

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

This study determined how the collection of student data could help a team of teachers learn more about their pupils and increase instructional efficacy. 121 students of 8th grade white house team at Spry Middle School in Webster, NY were selected to pilot this study. Student inventories measured 4MAT Thinking Styles, Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, and Interest. Student cumulative file information, eg. past years' grades and standardized test scores, was combined with the inventory results to form the Total Talent Portfolio, or TTP. The team then used this data to aid in classroom grouping. The teachers found that the TTP …

Ncs-1 Inhibits Insulin-Stimulated Glut4 Translocation In 3t3l1 Adipocytes Through A Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase-Dependent Pathway, Silvia Mora, Paul L. Durham, Jeffery R. Smith, Andrew F. Russo, Andreas Jeromin, Jefferey E. Pessin Jan 2002

Ncs-1 Inhibits Insulin-Stimulated Glut4 Translocation In 3t3l1 Adipocytes Through A Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase-Dependent Pathway, Silvia Mora, Paul L. Durham, Jeffery R. Smith, Andrew F. Russo, Andreas Jeromin, Jefferey E. Pessin

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Expression of NCS-1 (neuronal calcium sensor-1, also termed frequenin) in 3T3L1 adipocytes strongly inhibited insulin-stimulated translocation of GLUT4 and insulin-responsive aminopeptidase. The effect of NCS-1 was specific for GLUT4 and the insulin-responsive aminopeptidase translocation as there was no effect on the trafficking of the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor or the GLUT1 glucose transporter isoform. Moreover, NCS-1 showed partial colocalization with GLUT4-EGFP in the perinuclear region. The inhibitory action of NCS-1 was independent of calcium sequestration since neither treatment with ionomycin nor endothelin-1, both of which elevated the intracellular calcium concentration, restored insulin-stimulated GLUT4 translocation. Furthermore, NCS-1 did not alter the …

Information And Communication Technologies In Classrooms : Perspectives From An International Study, John Ainley, Diana Banks, Marianne Fleming

2002 - Providing World-Class School Education

Many countries have envisaged a significant role for information and communications technologies (ICT) in their education systems. For example, in Australia one of the goals in the declaration of the Ministerial Council on Education, Training and Youth Affairs on national goals for schooling stated that students should be confident, creative and productive users of new technologies and understand the impact of those technologies on society. A national action plan, Learning in an Online World, has set three priority areas for development making available connections of sufficient bandwidth to allow schools to integrate online services into curriculum practice; providing effective pre-service …

Citizenship And Democracy : Australian Students' Knowledge And Beliefs : The Iea Civic Education Study Of Fourteen Year Olds, Suzanne Mellor, Kerry Kennedy, Lisa Greenwood

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

This Civic Education Study was carried out in two phases by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). Phase 1 examined the contexts and meaning of civic education in 24 countries. In Phase 2, nationally representative samples of nearly 90,000 students in the usual grade for 14 year olds in 28 countries were surveyed on topics ranging from their knowledge of fundamental democratic principles and skills in interpreting political information to their attitudes toward government and willingness to participate in civic activity. This Australian national report analyses and interprets the Australian data collected.
