CyanoNews
CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.
The Utilization Of Curriculum And Instructional Design For Workplace Learning And Performance, Jean Anne Bongiovanni
The Utilization Of Curriculum And Instructional Design For Workplace Learning And Performance, Jean Anne Bongiovanni
Education Masters
Workplace learning and performance is today's new form of job security. People need to learn continuously and help others learn as well. By developing, stretching, and continually challenging themselves, they build a skill base, reputation, and a network of contacts that help them grow. People must be prepared to make learning a continuing lifelong activity. lifelong learning is not a privilege or right, it is simply a necessity for anyone, young or old, who must live with the escalating pace of change in the family, on the job, in the community, and in the worldwide society. (Cross 1981). Workplace Learning …

National Register Testing Of Nine Archeological Sites At Waco Lake, Mclennan County, Texas, Ann M. Scott, Karl W. Kibler, Marie E. Blake
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
From October 2000 to February 2001, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing of nine sites located at Waco Lake in McLennan County, Texas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, sponsored the project as a result of the proposed plan to raise the conservation pool level of the lake by 7 ft to 462 ft above mean sea level. Waco Lake is located in central McLennan County, Texas, on the west side of the City of Waco (Figure 1). It is on the Bosque River, with the dam lying ca. …

Hazard Rating Of Parks Trees And Establishment Of Adopt-A-Tree Program, Nacogdoches, Texas, David Kulhavy, L. Allen Smith, Daniel Unger, Aron L. Kulhavy
Faculty Presentations
The purpose of this project is to inventory parks and recreation trees in the city of Nacogdoches, Texas, using a Trimble Pro XRS GPS unit to establish location; and to construct a geographic information system (GIS) database for forest health that can be updated as forest health conditions change in the future. Tree health data collected will include structure of the main bole and branches; insect and disease pests; life expectancy; and shape of the crown and cultural history. An Adopt-a-Tree program, developed in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be established to …

Archaeological Investigations At The Last Spanish Colonial Mission Establised On The Texas Frontier: Nuestra Senora Del Rufugio (41rf1), Refugio County, Texas, Cynthia L. Tennis
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Between 1998 and 1999, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted archaeological investigations at the Spanish Colonial-period Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, located in Refugio County, in southern Texas. This project was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2025. The initial phase of the excavations concentrated along US 77, in the TxDOT right-of-way, and the subsequent work conducted led to the exhumation of 165 burials, the discovery of the location of the 1796 church and the associated mission compound features.
The excavations and subsequent analyses were guided by several research questions focused on shedding …

Regression Analysis Of Recurrent Gap Times With Time-Dependent Covariates, Ying Qing Chen, Mei-Cheng Wang, Yijian Huang
Regression Analysis Of Recurrent Gap Times With Time-Dependent Covariates, Ying Qing Chen, Mei-Cheng Wang, Yijian Huang
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Individual subjects may experience recurrent events of same type over a relatively long period of time in a longitudinal study. Researchers are often interested in the distributional pattern of gaps between the successive recurrent events and their association with certain concomitant covariates as well. In this article, their probability structure is investigated in presence of censoring. According to the identified structure, we introduce the proportional reverse-time hazards models that allow arbitrary baseline function for every individual in the study, when the time-dependent covariates effect is of main interest. Appropriate inference procedures are proposed and studied to estimate the parameters of …
Estimating Causal Parameters In Marginal Structural Models With Unmeasured Confounders Using Instrumental Variables, Tanya A. Henneman, Mark Johannes Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard
Estimating Causal Parameters In Marginal Structural Models With Unmeasured Confounders Using Instrumental Variables, Tanya A. Henneman, Mark Johannes Van Der Laan, Alan E. Hubbard
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
For statisticians analyzing medical data, a significant problem in determining the causal effect of a treatment on a particular outcome of interest, is how to control for unmeasured confounders. Techniques using instrumental variables (IV) have been developed to estimate causal parameters in the presence of unmeasured confounders. In this paper we apply IV methods to both linear and non-linear marginal structural models. We study a specific class of generalized estimating equations that is appropriate to these data, and compare the performance of the resulting estimator to the standard IV method, a two-stage least squares procedure. Our results are applied to …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Self-administered computer-assisted blood donor screening strategies may elicit more accurate responses and improve the screening process.
Methods: Randomized crossover trial comparing responses to questions on a computerized hand-held tool (HealthQuiz, or HQ), to responses on the standard written instrument (Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire, or DHAQ). Randomly selected donors at 133 blood donation clinics in the area of Hamilton, Canada participated from 1995 to 1996. Donors were randomized to complete either the HQ or the DHAQ first, followed by the other instrument. In addition to responses of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ on both questionnaires, the HQ provided a …
