Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy Jan 2002

Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy

Bulletins 4000 -

Many people believe that organic agriculture systems can only work in high rainfall regions. However, some of Australia’s most successful organic farmers are the experienced organic wheatbelt growers who produce cereal, pulse and oilseed crops in different regions and soil types across the country.

Wheat is the major organic cereal crop grown in Australia - predominantly noodle and breadmaking wheats for export markets.

Farming systems developed by modern organic wheat growers can differ significantly in concept, strategies and techniques from those used by conventional growers. Successful conversion to organic requires careful planning and integration of the whole farming system over …

Celling Black Bodies: Black Women In The Global Prison Industrial Complex, Julia Sudbury Jan 2002

Celling Black Bodies: Black Women In The Global Prison Industrial Complex, Julia Sudbury

Sociology

The 1980s and 1990s have witnessed an explosion in the population of women prisoners in Europe, North America, and Australasia, accompanied by a boom in prison construction. This article argues that this new pattern of women's incarceration has been forged by three overlapping phenomena. The first is the fundamental shift in the role of the state that has occurred as a result of neo-liberal globalization. The second and related phenomenon is the emergence and subsequent global expansion of what has been labelled a 'prison industrial complex' made up of an intricate web of relations between state penal institutions, politicians and …

Biodiversity In And Around Mcelligot's Pool, Sandi Zellmer, Scott A. Johnson Jan 2002

Biodiversity In And Around Mcelligot's Pool, Sandi Zellmer, Scott A. Johnson

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Through characters like farmer McElligot and the Lorax, who spoke out against the greedy Once-ler and his destructive clear-cutting practices, Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Suess, vividly depicted the plight of many private lands and waterways in the twentieth century. Although the message still resonates with children (and adults) today, the ecological health of private land has not improved a whole lot since Geisel wrote McElligot's Pool in 1947. Don't get me wrong, there have been immense gains in industrial pollution control and in habitat preservation on public lands. Yet there is still a long way to go, particularly on private …

How Can We Best Measure Fundamental Movement Skills?, Beth P. Hands Jan 2002

How Can We Best Measure Fundamental Movement Skills?, Beth P. Hands

Health Sciences Conference Papers

The assessment of movement skill is a critical component of many disciplines and professions. In particular, the effectiveness of movement programs hinges on accurate information about the skill level of participants. This information should be based on assessment that is valid, comprehensive, educative, fair and explicit. The chosen process is matched to the assessment purpose. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of quantitative and qualitative strategies will be presented and the areas for future research highlighted.

What Do We Really Know About The Constraints And Enablers Of Physical Activity Levels In Young Children?, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin Jan 2002

What Do We Really Know About The Constraints And Enablers Of Physical Activity Levels In Young Children?, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin

Health Sciences Conference Papers

Ample evidence exists to support the benefits of habitual physical activity levels on long term health and well-being for adults, youth and, more recently, children. However information about factors that impact on young children’s choices to be active or inactive is limited because the accurate measurement of physical activity in young children is difficult. Consequently, many statements found in the literature about young children’s physical activity levels are not founded on empirically validated information. Some conclusions are extrapolated to younger children from findings in studies of older children.

This paper is based on an extensive review of literature and the …

Respiratory Complications Of Parkinson's Disease, Holly A. Shill, Mark Stacy Jan 2002

Respiratory Complications Of Parkinson's Disease, Holly A. Shill, Mark Stacy

Neurology

Patients with Parkinson's disease are at risk for pulmonary complications as a consequence of both the underlying disease pathology and the side effects of medication. Degeneration of the substantia nigra and subsequent loss of dopaminergic neurons may produce changes in ventilatory parameters. Upper airway obstruction and chest wall restriction are both common, and both may respond to levodopa. However, therapy for Parkinson's may also contribute to pulmonary morbidity. Overtreatment with levodopa causes respiratory dyskinesia that may be difficult to differentiate from complications of the disease itself. Therapy with ergot derivatives may cause pleuropulmonary fibrosis. Pneumonia resulting from the respiratory complications …

Orts 62, 2002, The George Macdonald Society

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter

It is always a pleasure to find a contemporary book, pamphlet or magazine article previously unrecorded in the bibliographies. Recently I came across-'The Elocutionist' with a portrait of George MacDonald on the cover and two poems for recitation within its pages: 'Abu Midjan' and 'After an Old Legend' - both from 'Parables and Ballads' (being Vol. IV of 'Works of Fancy and Imagination’ 1871). It is good to know that the public at large were introduced to MacDonald's poetry in this way. I have practised reciting the poems (on my own) and would agree that they are worth reading out …
