Book Review: Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine: A Casebook , Robert Bensen May 2002

Book Review: Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine: A Casebook , Robert Bensen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

To readers raised on the literary Great Plains of Rolvaag and Cather, or in the West of Native writers Momaday, Welsh, and Silko, the North Dakota of Louise Erdrich's Ojibwa and mixed-blood characters in Love Medicine (1984, 1993) may seem a comically alien and tragically magical place. Hertha D. Wong's casebook will prove a welcome and reliable guide to the strange practices of Love Medicine. These thirteen critical studies (complemented, even upstaged, by two Erdrich essays and interviews with her and Michael Dorris) address important questions concerning history and culture, identity and narrativity, oral and literary structure, and Erdrich's 1993 …

Book Review: Dream A Little: Land And Social Justice In Modern America By Dorothee E. Kocks., Betsy Downey May 2002

Book Review: Dream A Little: Land And Social Justice In Modern America By Dorothee E. Kocks., Betsy Downey

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the beginning was land. Lots of land. "Before there was a welfare state, there was a frontier state," which distributed land in hopes of ending poverty. Dream a Little explores what Dorothee Kocks calls the "geographic embrace": the dream that nature has a moral function and offers "a blueprint to a good society." The first part of her book examines the frontier state, finding many similarities with the welfare state. Most Americans seem blind to the parallels, believing that nature and land are good; land is a "birthright," and a homestead is not a handout. "Asking for land is …

A Comparison Of Environmental Impact Assessment Process Between The National Environmental Protection Act (Nepa) And The Basic Environmental Protection Act (Bepa), V An Rhee

LLM Theses and Essays

The importance of environmental laws in the developed countries has been well recognized for a long time and a number of regulations, orders and statutes are practically operated for protection of human environments. The environmental laws are firmly located as one of major laws in the legal systems of the United States. Although Korea’s environmental laws were made when those of the United States were created, different backgrounds Korea has affect from establishment of them to development and have brought about harms to environments, which are not originally intended. After several amendments of environmental laws of Korea, there is the …

Total Factor Productivity, Human Capital And Outward Orientation: Differences By Stage Of Ddevelopment And Geographic Regions, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay May 2002

Total Factor Productivity, Human Capital And Outward Orientation: Differences By Stage Of Ddevelopment And Geographic Regions, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay

Economics Working Papers

Do openness and human capital accumulation promote economic growth? While intuition argues yes, the existing empirical evidence provides mixed support for such assertions. We examine Cobb-Douglas production function specifications for a 30-year panel of 83 countries representing all regions of the world and all income groups. We estimate and compare labor and capital elasticities of output per worker across each of several income and geographic groups, finding significant differences in production technology. Then we estimate the total factor productivity series for each classification. Using determinants of total factor productivity that include, among many others, human capital, openness, and distortion of …

Limit Theorems For Estimating The Parameters Of Differentiated Product Demand Systems, Steven T. Berry, Oliver B. Linton, Ariel Pakes May 2002

Limit Theorems For Estimating The Parameters Of Differentiated Product Demand Systems, Steven T. Berry, Oliver B. Linton, Ariel Pakes

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide an asymptotic distribution theory for a class of Generalized Method of Moments estimators that arise in the study of differentiated product markets when the number of observations is associated with the number of products within a given market. We allow for three sources of error: the sampling error in estimating market shares, the simulation error in approximating the shares predicted by the model, and the underlying model error. The limiting distribution of the parameter estimator is normal provided the size of the consumer sample and the number of simulation draws grow at a large enough rate relative to …

What Matters Most: Evidence-Based Findings Of Key Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences And Outcomes For Girls And Boys Throughout Their Primary And Secondary Schooling, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe May 2002

What Matters Most: Evidence-Based Findings Of Key Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences And Outcomes For Girls And Boys Throughout Their Primary And Secondary Schooling, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe

Student learning processes

Much of the prevailing public interest and media 'hype' surrounding gender issues in education - especially differences in boys' and girls' experiences and outcomes of schooling - amount to little more than anecdotal rhetoric and opinion. In this expanded, supplementary submission to the Inquiry Into the Education of Boys, key findings are presented highlighting 'real' effects from recent and emerging evidence-based research on teacher and school effectiveness. For example, whereas on average, boys' literacy skills, general academic achievements, attitudes, behaviours and experiences of schooling are notably poorer than those of girls - despite their socioeconomic and sociocultural backgrounds - these …

Use Of West Virginia Permanent Traffic Recorder Data To Develop Factors For Traffic And Truck Variation, Jacob Scott D'Angelo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to use data collected from the 52 permanent count stations located throughout the state to develop four sets of factors that would assist the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) in the management and engineering of the roadways in West Virginia.;The objectives of this study were to: (1) Establish correction factors that can be applied to the short-term single pneumatic tube traffic count stations to adjust for the effect of three or more axle trucks on the volume counts. (2) Establish factors that use the peak hour volume (PHV) to estimate the design hour …

Troubled Waters: A Reprisal Of Sea Power And Maritime Importance In The Turbulent Years Of The Texas Revolt, Andrew Reynolds Galloway May 2002

Troubled Waters: A Reprisal Of Sea Power And Maritime Importance In The Turbulent Years Of The Texas Revolt, Andrew Reynolds Galloway

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The first section shall deal with the role the sea played following Mexican Independence. In the foreign colonization of Texas, Stephen F. Austin developed and designed his colonies similar to the agricultural communities of the American South that were built around nautical transportation from 1821–1829. The second area will deal with Mexican Texas from 1829 through 1832. By 1829 Mexico attempted to reinstate authority over Texas. Reaction to Mexican limitations was unified action through civil disobedience. As their rebellion brought the desired freedoms for the Texicans, they were encouraged to continue. The third discussion is the revolutionary period from 1832 …

Test Anxiety And Age: As We Grow Older Do We Become More Test Anxious?, Sharon Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this investigation were to (a) establish the test anxiety level of students in the second grade, fourth grade, and sixth grade (n=92); and (b) determine the difference in the levels of test anxiety between the three grade levels. Students demonstrated surprising results on the test anxiety measure (TASC). The average score for the second grade was the highest and the average score for the sixth grade was the lowest. A multiple comparisons analysis revealed a significant difference in test anxiety levels between the second and sixth grade. However, the difference was not an increase in test anxiety, …

Frequency Of Neutrophil Alloantigens By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Iman H. Al-Sheikh, Mohammed A. Al-Khalifa, Amjad S. Rahi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Neutrophil alloantigens are responsible for a number of immune clinical disorders such as neonatal alloimmune neutropenia, febrile transfusion reaction and transfusion related acute lung injury. Recent progress enabled typing of neutrophil antigens by deoxyribose nucleic acid based techniques. In this study we report for the first time the frequency distribution of human neutrophil antigen system-one in Saudis. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 100 successive healthy Saudi male blood donors presenting to Regional Laboratory and Blood Bank, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1997. Human neutrophil antigen typing was carried out using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer method. RESULTS: …

Titus Quinctius Flamininus: Imperialism And The Pursuit Of Auctoritas, Jeffrey Steven Volcheck May 2002

Titus Quinctius Flamininus: Imperialism And The Pursuit Of Auctoritas, Jeffrey Steven Volcheck

Student Work

In the early second century BC, Rome built an empire that encompassed the Western Mediterranean basin and most of the Italic Peninsula. The necessity of using manpower provided by Italian treaties, the desire for economic gain, the differing treatment of Eastern and Western peoples, and especially, the political competition among the nobiles all created the Roman imperialistic war-machine. Growth had its consequences, though, as the Hannibalic War diminished the number of qualified generals, which allowed younger men to assume command of the legions. These circumstances allowed Titus Quinctius Flamininus to rise swiftly through the ranks of Roman Republican politics and …

Anisotropic-Reflectance Correction Of Multispectral Satellite Imagery In Complex Mountain Terrain, Stephen B. Cacioppo May 2002

Anisotropic-Reflectance Correction Of Multispectral Satellite Imagery In Complex Mountain Terrain, Stephen B. Cacioppo

Student Work

The utilization of satellite imagery acquired over rugged terrain is problematic because of anisotropic reflectance. A variety of environmental factors, such as the atmosphere and the topography, cause significant variation in the irradiant and radiant flux. Consequently, satellite imagery must be radiometric ally corrected to account for these variations which influence the at-satellite spectral response. In mountain terrain, the topographic effect is very pronounced, and satellite imagery must be normalized utilizing various techniques. The purpose of this research was to evaluate various implementations of the Minnaert correction technique which were designed to account for the influence of topography and land …

Casting New Light On An Old Subject: Death Penalty Abolitionism For A New Millennium, Wayne A. Logan May 2002

Casting New Light On An Old Subject: Death Penalty Abolitionism For A New Millennium, Wayne A. Logan

Michigan Law Review

For opponents of capital punishment, these would appear promising times. Not since 1972, when the Supreme Court invalidated the death penalty as then administered, has there been such palpable concern over its use, reflected in the lowest levels of public opinion support evidenced in some time. This concern is mirrored in the American Bar Association's recently recommended moratorium on use of the death penalty, the consideration of or actual imposition of moratoria in several states, and even increasing doubts voiced by high-profile political conservatives. An array of troubling empirical realities has accompanied this shift: persistent evidence of racial bias in …
