Economic Geography, Trade, And War, David H. Bearce, Eric O'N. Fisher Jun 2002

Economic Geography, Trade, And War, David H. Bearce, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

An agent-based model in which economic exchange and military conflict are emergent processes is used to explore the relationship between trade and war. The model of exchange is an applied analysis of the economics of trading networks. The model of conflict treats war as a breakdown in interstate bargaining due to incomplete information. The simulations explore how initial economic geography, state revisionism, defensive advantage, and technological advancement akin to globalization affect both trade and war. The results show that the relationship between trade and war depends on third factors, and an inverse relationship between trade and war emerges from compact …

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day Jun 2002

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day

Aquaculture Collection

The world’s fish species are under threat from habitat degradation and over-exploitation. In many instances, attempts to bolster stocks have been made by rearing fish in hatcheries and releasing them into the wild. Fisheries restocking programmes have primarily headed these attempts. However, a substantial number of endangered species recovery programmes also rely on the release of hatchery-reared individuals to ensure long-term population viability. Fisheries scientists have known about the behavioural deficits displayed by hatchery-reared fish and the resultant poor survival rates in the wild for over a century. Whilst there remain considerable gaps in our knowledge about the exact causes …

Problems And Potential For Canadian Child Welfare, K. Swift, M. Callahan Jun 2002

Problems And Potential For Canadian Child Welfare, K. Swift, M. Callahan

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Canadian child welfare is not one single system, but more than 13 systems overseen by provincial and territorial governments and First Nations jurisdictions. However, there are many similarities among systems and general trends and directions common to them. One of these is a tendency for child welfare to become isolated from communities and related services because of its increasingly complex legislation and investigative mandates (Swift, 2001). Another is the challenge of serving peoples of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds, including First Nations peoples. Of course, each jurisdiction also responds to its particular social and political context in unique ways. In …

A Call For Co-Management: Treaty Fishing Allocation In New Zealand And Western Washington, Kristi Stanton Jun 2002

A Call For Co-Management: Treaty Fishing Allocation In New Zealand And Western Washington, Kristi Stanton

Washington International Law Journal

The Maori tribe of New Zealand and the tribes of western Washington are both subject to quota systems as a result of their treaty rights to fish. While New Zealand's quota system was legislatively imposed, western Washington's was judicially imposed. Nevertheless, the two quota systems are quite similar in that both permit approximately half the allowable catch of fish each year to go to the tribes. However, that amount does not adequately represent what the tribes are entitled to based on their treaty rights. Colonization, over-fishing, and resource deterioration have decreased the amount of fish available to the fishing population …

The Architecture Of The International Intellectual Property System, Graeme B. Dinwoodie Jun 2002

The Architecture Of The International Intellectual Property System, Graeme B. Dinwoodie

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Article, Professor Dinwoodie describes the classical architecture of the international intellectual property system, and discusses some of the ways in which that system is changing. In particular, he considers the role of national courts in the international intellectual property system. Conventional understanding suggests that national courts play a relatively limited role, but Professor Dinwoodie notes various developments that have enabled or required national courts to assume greater involvement in the construction of international intellectual property law. The infrastructure envisaged by the proposed Hague Convention, and by Professors Dreyfuss and Ginsburg in their proposal for a standalone convention on …

Corporate Cybersmear: Employers File John Doe Defamation Lawsuits Seeking The Identity Of Anonymous Employee Internet Posters, Margo E. K. Reder, Christine Neylon O'Brien

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Communications systems are now wide open and fully accessible, with no limits in range, scope or geography. Targeted audiences are accessible with pinpoint accuracy. Messages reach millions of readers with one click. There is a chat room for everyone. Most importantly, there is no limit on content. Therefore, employees can register their dissatisfaction by posting a message in a chat room. Moreover, the identity of the posting employee is not easily discoverable due to anonymous and pseudonymous communications capabilities. The nature of these online messages is qualitatively different from real-world communications. By way of example, newspapers have a responsibility regarding …

Sir William Berkeley's Discourse And View Of Virginia: A Note On Its Authorship, Warren M. Billings Jun 2002

Sir William Berkeley's Discourse And View Of Virginia: A Note On Its Authorship, Warren M. Billings

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677), long-time governor of Virginia is known to history mainly for his part in Bacon's Rebellion, an episode that forever stained an otherwise noteworthy reputation. Of a West Country family, he took degrees at the University of Oxford before making a tour of the Continent and finding a place at the court of Charles I. He remained a courtier until lack of advancement led him to seek a fresh start somewhere else, and he used his connections to win appointment as governor of Virginia in 1641. Save for the eight years of the Interregnum (1652-1660), he was …

Planning For Regional Economic Development In Oregon: Finding A Place For Equity Issues In Regional Governance, John Provo Jun 2002

Planning For Regional Economic Development In Oregon: Finding A Place For Equity Issues In Regional Governance, John Provo

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

While the state of Oregon is cited in the new regionalism literature for exemplary land use and environmental planning, this paper focuses on the treatment of equity issues. Implementation of a revised statewide regional economic development program is discussed, contrasting efforts in the metropolitan Portland area with rural southeast Oregon. Despite following very different planning and grant-making processes, both introduced equity issues concerned with ensuring access to the economy. In Portland this meant aspiring to connect economically distressed communities with a successful regional economy while in southeast Oregon a distressed region hoped to connect with the state's growing economy.

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

She traces the historical relationship between Black Americans and the suburbs, and describes in detail the commercial disinvestment in two contemporary Black suburbs, Prince George's County, Maryland, and south DeKalb, Georgia. Honest Abe ?: Biography Examines Lincoln's Ethics, Harold Holzer

Civil War Book Review

How was it that a man born to the most grueling poverty on the remote western prairie, lacking in formal education--merely the son of "a wandering laboring boy," in his own words, and early in life, little better himself--rose from obscurity to the American presidency, and from there to immortality?....
