We synthesized key findings from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, the world's largest and longest-running experimental study of habitat fragmentation. Although initially designed to assess the influence of fragment area on Amazonian biotas, the project has yielded insights that go far beyond the original scope of the study. Results suggest that edge effects play a key role in fragment dynamics, that the matrix has a major influence on fragment connectivity and functioning, and that many Amazonian species avoid even small (<100-m-wide) clearings. The effects of fragmentation are highly eclectic, altering species richness and abundances, species invasions, forest dynamics, the trophic structure of communities, and a variety of ecological and ecosystem processes. Moreover, forest fragmentation appears to interact synergistically with ecological changes such as hunting, fires, and logging, collectively posing an even greater threat to the rainforest biota.

The Internationalization Of Money And Finance And The Globalization Of Financial Markets, James R. Lothian
The Internationalization Of Money And Finance And The Globalization Of Financial Markets, James R. Lothian
CRIF Working Paper series
In this paper I combine long multi-country time series data for interest rates and stock returns with the institutional evidence for much earlier centuries amassed by economic historians to study the question of financial globalization and how it has altered since the late classical era. At their longest, for Dutch and English short-term interest rates, the quantitative data that I use extend back slightly more than three centuries. The institutional history provides information on an additional millennium’s worth of experience. The conclusion that I reach is that the internationalization of money and finance and the globalization of financial markets are …

Variations In Character And Preservation Potential Of Vegetation-Induced Obstacle Marks In The Variable Discharge Burdekin River Of North Queensland, Australia, Katsuhiro Nakayama, Christopher R. Fielding, Jan Alexander
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Vegetation-induced obstacle marks are described from Dalrymple Bend in the Burdekin River of Queensland, Australia, and their preservation potential is discussed. The bend is divided into a sand- and gravel-covered lower bar, and a vegetated upper bar. Obstacle marks, comprising an erosional scour and a depositional sediment tail, are recognized on the lower bar and the lower margin of the upper bar. Two types of obstacle marks are dominant in the lower part of the lower bar; sediment tail-dominated obstacle marks associated with inclined trees of Melaleuca argentea (Silverleaved Paperbark), and comparatively small obstacle marks around stranded driftwood. Obstacle marks …
