Runaway/Thrownaway Children: National Estimates And Characteristics., Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlack Oct 2002

Runaway/Thrownaway Children: National Estimates And Characteristics., Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlack

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Presents national estimates of children who ran away from or were thrown out of their homes, based on surveys of households and juvenile facilities. The Bulletin, which is part of a series summarizing findings from the Second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART–2), also analyzes characteristics of runaway/thrownaway children and episodes. Of the estimated 1,682,900 youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode during the study period, 37 percent were missing from their caretakers, and 21 percent were reported to authorities for help in locating them. Two-thirds of youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode were ages 15–17, and 71 …

Children Abducted By Family Members: National Estimates And Characteristics., Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlack

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Presents national estimates of children abducted by family members in 1999, their demographic characteristics, and the characteristics of perpetrators and episodes. The Bulletin is part of a series summarizing findings from the second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART-2). Of the estimated 203,900 children who experienced a family abduction, 117,200 were classified as caretaker missing and 56,500 were reported as missing to law enforcement or other agencies. Younger children were at greatest risk of being abducted by a family member. Use of threats or physical force was uncommon. The Bulletin also discusses policy implications of …

Growing U.S. Security Interests In Central Asia, Elizabeth Wishnick Dr. Oct 2002

Growing U.S. Security Interests In Central Asia, Elizabeth Wishnick Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author assesses U.S. security interests and military activities in Central Asia. She notes that strengthening the Central Asian states against terrorism and assisting their transition to stable and prosperous nations are difficult and fraught with danger. In particular, there is the risk that the U.S. military presence in the region and security assistance to repressive regimes might taint America. If not astutely managed, this strategy could have the opposite of the intended results and generate increased instability, spark anti-Americanism, and antagonize Russia and China. To avoid this, Dr. Wishnick advocates a multilateral strategy that integrates the military, political, and …

Florida Community College Collection Assessment Report, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Heather Thuotte-Pierson

School of Information Faculty Publications

In 2002 a study was conducted of community college collections in Florida as a follow-up and an additional interval to a similar study conducted in 1998. The analysis in 2002 compared the profile of the LINCC database, three peer groups of community colleges by enrollment size, and each of the twenty-eight community colleges with the 1998 study results. Among the significant findings are: The median age of LINCC collective holdings improved between 1998 and 2002, declining from 24 years to 22 years. The “year reached 50%” for the LINCC database in 2002 was 1980, meaning that half of the monographs …

Statistical Methods To Partition Effects Of Quantity And Location During Comparison Of Categorical Maps At Multiple Resolutions, R. Gil Pontius Oct 2002

Statistical Methods To Partition Effects Of Quantity And Location During Comparison Of Categorical Maps At Multiple Resolutions, R. Gil Pontius

Geography

New generalized statistical methods to measure agreement between two maps at multiple-resolutions, where each cell in each map has a multinomial distribution among any number of categories, are presented. This methodology quantifies agreement between any two categorical maps, where either map uses fuzzy or crisp classification. The method measures the agreement at various resolutions by aggregating neighboring cells into an increasingly coarse grid. At each resolution, the method partitions the overall agreement into correct due to chance, correct due to quantity, correct due to location, error due to location, and error due to quantity. In addition, the method computes six …

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok Oct 2002

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration …
