Barriers To Sustainability Among Tourism-Related Businesses : Identification And Reduction, Jonathan Andrew Vernon Jan 2002

Barriers To Sustainability Among Tourism-Related Businesses : Identification And Reduction, Jonathan Andrew Vernon

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The attainment of sustainable development has emerged as one of the main challenges facing society and the economy in the twenty-first century. In tourism, the English Tourism Council (2001 a, p. 11) recognise that sustainable tourism can no longer be regarded as an optional extra, but is fundamental to safeguarding the long-term competitiveness of the industry. To establish sustainable development as a primary strategic objective within the tourism industry represents a substantial challenge. Such a goal is problematic not least because the sector is so diverse and is based around a large number of small businesses which are not always …

A Critical Analysis Of Gardens As A Resource For Tourism And Recreation In The Uk, Joanne Jane Connell Jan 2002

A Critical Analysis Of Gardens As A Resource For Tourism And Recreation In The Uk, Joanne Jane Connell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Garden visiting has become a popular leisure pursuit in recent years. Within a tourism and recreation context, scant research exists on the subject of gardens as recreational resources and the manner in which they are presented to and consumed by the public. This thesis explores the scope and nature of gardens as tourism and recreation resources in the UK. The thesis examines the conceptual foundations of the garden, in order to establish what reasons explain predisposition towards garden visiting, and why gardens provide a desirable environment in which people want to spend leisure time. The activity of garden visiting is …

Economic Linkages Within The Rural Economy: The Case Of Producer Services, Bryan Keith Mills Jan 2002

Economic Linkages Within The Rural Economy: The Case Of Producer Services, Bryan Keith Mills

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This research seeks to contribute towards the understanding of economic linkage within the rural context by exploring the relationship between rurally located small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their purchase of producer (business) services. In addition, the work considers other inter-rural and intra-rural differences, in both firm (SME) behaviour and firm characteristics. Whilst the subject of linkages has been explored by other researchers, the market town and SME focus of this thesis provides a more spatially contained framework than is often encountered within this type of research. By using four towns of similar size and structure contained within two noticeably …

Growth And Form: Indian Tribes, Terrorism, And The Durability Of Environmental Law, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 2002

Growth And Form: Indian Tribes, Terrorism, And The Durability Of Environmental Law, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

My target audience is the body of extraordinary law students here at the Vermont Law School who will define the shape and direction of tomorrow's environmental law. My plan is to derive five virtues of significant achievement—genius, high-leveraging, symbolism, optimism, and courage—and to convince you that the Indian tribes of the United States are fortuitously blessed with these capacities for positive change.

I am obliged to defend my five virtues against the charge that they are "gray" virtues, mere tactics of opportunity open to use by the forces of hatred and destruction as freely as those of nurturing and protection. …

Impact Of Land Use Change On Hydroelectric Power Generation In Cameron Highlands, Fook Kun Choy Jan 2002

Impact Of Land Use Change On Hydroelectric Power Generation In Cameron Highlands, Fook Kun Choy

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study assesses the impact of land use changes on annual energy production of the hydro stations of Cameron Highlands Hydroelectric Scheme. Land use affects sediment load and streamflow of Sungai Telom and Sungai Bertam, which influences power generation and energy production of the several hydro stations in Cameron Highlands. Data of rainfall, streamflow, suspended sediment load, land use and energy output for the period 1964 to 1998 were collected, processed and analysed. Regression analysis, double mass curve method and double ratio technique were used in the assessment. The suspended sediment load and annual runoff of Sungai Telom and Sungai …

An Analysis Of The Demand For Passenger Rail Services In Peninsular Malaysia, Tick Seng Lee Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Demand For Passenger Rail Services In Peninsular Malaysia, Tick Seng Lee

Student Works (2000-2009)

Rail passenger service is an important part of Malaysia's public transport system where Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is the only sole provider of intercity rail passenger services in Peninsular Malaysia. For years, there has been a decline in the number of intercity train passengers. This paper attempts to evaluate the factors, which determine the demand for rail passenger services. Binary logit models were built based on the data collected from the train passenger survey and bus passenger survey that were conducted across the Peninsular whereby the socioeconomic and demographic variables were coded into dummy variables so that these variables …

The Economic Role Of West Virginia's Food Systems In A Globalized Economic Environment., Sangnyeol Jung Jan 2002

The Economic Role Of West Virginia's Food Systems In A Globalized Economic Environment., Sangnyeol Jung

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The structure of West Virginia’s food systems is analyzed within the context of a changing structure of the U.S. and global food systems. Further, the economic role of food systems in West Virginia is investigated both at the state and an industry level using a combination of a descriptive analysis and an impact analysis. ARCVIEW is used for mapping in the descriptive analysis. The impact analysis is done using an input-output model. The descriptive analysis by itself cannot be used to draw definitive conclusions regarding the role of West Virginia’s food systems; thus, in addition to the descriptive analysis, an …

On The Edge Of Chaos: A Delphi Study Of The Changing Role Of The Secondary Principal., Rebecca H. Goodwin Jan 2002

The purpose of this study was to describe the changing role of the secondary principal. The study examined the contemporary high school principalship and described changes in the principalship, the role of the contemporary principal, and the preferred future for the principalship. Recognizing the complexity of the position, the study also used chaos and complexity theory to critically analyze the findings and to discern if the theory provided an understanding of these changes and their impact. This was a mixed-method two-stage study conducted electronically with both qualitative and quantitative instruments. The first stage used the Delphi method of research to …

Bullying In Schools : Understanding And Interventions, Donkar Wangmo Jan 2002

Bullying In Schools : Understanding And Interventions, Donkar Wangmo

Graduate Research Papers

Bullying in schools is a worldwide problem that can have negative consequences for the general school climate and for the right of the students to learn in a safe environment without fear (Banks, 1997). Bullying can also have negative lifelong consequences, both for students who bully and for their victims. Although much of the formal research on bullying has taken place in the Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, and Japan, the problems associated with bullying have been noted and discussed wherever formal schooling environments exist (Banks, 1997). Olweus (1993) reported that one child out of every seven is either a bully …

The Economic Impact Of Native American Gaming: Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Lisa Borromeo Jan 2002

The Economic Impact Of Native American Gaming: Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Lisa Borromeo

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

The purpose of this paper is to put the economic and social importance of Indian gambling on and off the reservation into perspective. Because the economic and social effects of Indian gaming are additive, one cannot form a coherent picture of the net impact of gaming without measuring both the economic and social effects (Cornell et al., 1998). Because gambling has impacts beyond reservation boundaries, studying the surrounding local economy is a necessary action. As both the number of tribes with gaming operations and the magnitude of the operations increase, so do their effects. This paper combines a general overview …

Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne Jan 2002

Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne

International Journal of Speleology

Vadose weathering is a significant mechanism for initiating breakdown in caves. Vadose weathering of ore bodies, mineral veins, palaeokarst deposits, non-carbonate keystones and impure, altered or fractured bedrock, which is intersected by caves, will frequently result in breakdown. Breakdown is an active, ongoing process. Breakdown occurs throughout the vadose zone, and is not restricted to large diameter passages, or to cave ceilings. The surfaces of disarticulated blocks are commonly coated, rather than having fresh broken faces, and blocks continue to disintegrate after separating from the bedrock. Not only gypsum, but also hydromagnesite and aragonite are responsible for crystal wedging. It …

Performance Of Fisheries Sector Planning In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Kk Ahmed Jan 2002

Performance Of Fisheries Sector Planning In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Kk Ahmed

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The overall planning performance of the fisheries sector in Bangladesh over the past three decades was evaluated. Performance has been unsatisfactory largely due to contiguous overestimation of the planning targets and the existence of serious financial, technological, institutional and social constraints. Despite the remarkable growth in export earnings and a stable GDP contribution of 3.2–5.6%, budget allocations remained extremely low (0.7–1.4% of total outlay) in subsequent plan periods. Production from marine fisheries performed satisfactorily with slow growth in recent years, while inland fisheries with initial poor performance showed improvements from the mid-1980s owing to increased productivity in culture fisheries, particularly …

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii Jan 2002

Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention: Development Of A Quantitative Method To Assess Community Vulnerability And Air Emission Hazard For Optimal Impact., John Lewis Boettner Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study develops a quantitative and objective method of analyzing community vulnerability combined with potential exposure to emission hazards. This extends earlier work concerning Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention (EJP2) initiatives for optimal selection of facilities for resource allocation for pollution prevention initiatives. A 1992 EPA report indicated that minority and low-income communities are exposed to higher levels of pollution in their neighborhoods than that of the general population. Environmental Justice is a grassroots derived term for addressing these disproportionate shares of negative environmental impacts, which are placed upon people of minority or low socio-economic status. The method developed identifies …

The Influence Of Lineaments And Hydrogeologic Setting On Water Well Yield In Lebanon And Southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania., Jeremy Scott Robinson Jan 2002

The Influence Of Lineaments And Hydrogeologic Setting On Water Well Yield In Lebanon And Southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania., Jeremy Scott Robinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A study of 1100 water wells in Lebanon and southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania was conducted to determine the relationships of several hydrogeologic variables, especially lineaments, to water well yield. This project will likely improve the use of ground water exploration techniques in the area. The primary well groups studied were 493 business/large-diameter public supply wells, and 522 domestic-agriculture supply wells. Clastic terrane wells produce higher yields than carbonate and igneous terrane wells. Wells located near any fault type produce greater yields than wells further away. Lineaments relate better to well yield for business/public supply wells than for domestic-agriculture wells. Clastic …

A History Of Jewish Life In The Central Appalachian Coalfields, 1870s To 1970s., Deborah R. Weiner Jan 2002

A History Of Jewish Life In The Central Appalachian Coalfields, 1870s To 1970s., Deborah R. Weiner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores the intersection of two historical phenomena. From the 1880s to the 1920s, Central Appalachia experienced rapid industrial development as the entry of railroads into the mountains initiated large-scale coal extraction. At the same time, East European Jewish immigrants streamed into America's eastern seaboard. Some found their way to the coalfields, where they carved out a role as retailers in an expanding rural-industrial economy. This niche enabled them to build several small but vital Jewish communities which lasted late into the twentieth century. Their economic position facilitated the entry of Jews into the coalfield middle class and made …

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy Jan 2002

Building The Beaver And Lake Erie Canal: The Politics Of Public Improvements In Pennsylvania, 1783-1845., William David Mccarthy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Patterns of commerce and settlement in colonial America were shaped by watercourses and portages. Road building skills were primitive and boating represented the most effective means of moving bulk freight and passengers. Traders and frontiersmen leading the advance of European settlement into the Appalachian Mountains therefore adopted the shortest crossings between watersheds. Natural conditions in Pennsylvania did not promote an orderly advance westward and produced isolated clusters of settlement around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with small and widespread settlements in Northwest Pennsylvania. State leaders were hard pressed to define the limits of Pennsylvania until the end of the eighteenth century, and …

Powers Inherent In Sovereignty: Indians, Aliens, Territories, And The Nineteenth Century Origins Of Plenary Power Over Foreign Affairs, Sarah H. Cleveland Jan 2002

Powers Inherent In Sovereignty: Indians, Aliens, Territories, And The Nineteenth Century Origins Of Plenary Power Over Foreign Affairs, Sarah H. Cleveland

Faculty Scholarship

Does the United States have powers inherent in sovereignty? At least since the 1819 decision in McCulloch v. Maryland, conventional wisdom has held that national government is one of limited, enumerated powers and exercises “only the powers granted to it” by the Constitution and those implied powers “necessary and proper” to the exercise of the delegated powers. All powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states and to the people. In the 1936 decision in United States v. Curtiss-Wright Export Corp., however, the Supreme Court asserted that federal authority over foreign relations operated independently …
