Investigating Spatio-Temporal Variability Of Hydrological Components In The Canadian Rockies (Alberta), Christopher Dennis Hopkinson Jan 2002

Investigating Spatio-Temporal Variability Of Hydrological Components In The Canadian Rockies (Alberta), Christopher Dennis Hopkinson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis addresses two questions related to the broad topic of mountain hydrology: 1) How do interannual hydrological balancee and pathway components vary in complex temperate high mountain environments at various spatio-temporal scales? 2) a) Is it possible, using dedicated hydrological models, for significant errors in simulated runoff components despite good hydrograph recreations (i.e. right results for wrong reasons)? b) If so, what kinds of errors are encountered? The first question was addressed by undertaking a hydrological tracer and hydrometric study at three basin scales (Banff —2200 km2, Lake Louise —400 km2 and the headwaters —30 km2) within the Bow …

Bonytail (Gila Elegans) May Enhance Survival Of Razorback Suckers (Xyrauchen Texanus) In Rearing Ponds By Preying On Exotic Crayfish, Nathan Lenon, Krystyna Anne Stave, Tom Burke, James E. Deacon Jan 2002

Bonytail (Gila Elegans) May Enhance Survival Of Razorback Suckers (Xyrauchen Texanus) In Rearing Ponds By Preying On Exotic Crayfish, Nathan Lenon, Krystyna Anne Stave, Tom Burke, James E. Deacon

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This study examined the potential of bonytail (Gila elegans) to enhance survival of young razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) in rearing ponds by serving as a biological control agent for young stages of Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarki). Large populations of crayfish in rearing ponds negatively affect the survival of razorback suckers, through predation and competition for food. Traps made with 6.34 mm (0.25 inch) mesh have been used in an effort to reduce crayfish populations, however crayfish less than 17 mm carapace length (CPL) are able to escape. Juvenile bonytail in experimental trials ate young crayfish ranging in size from …

The study investigated student success in a dual enrollment program at an open enrollment community college. The objective of the analysis was to determine the success of dual enrolled students compared with regularly enrolled community college students. Indicators of student success, including GPA, retention, and remediation, were examined for dual enrolled students; Results of the study indicated that high school students concurrently enrolled at a community college were similar in many respects to the general college population. Overall, there was a significant difference in the GPA performance between Community College High School (CCHS) students and regularly enrolled college students, with …

Exploring The Shivwits Production Zone, Eva Albrecht Jensen Jan 2002

Exploring The Shivwits Production Zone, Eva Albrecht Jensen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Shivwits Plateau is situated on the Arizona Strip in the northwest corner of Arizona. It is a relatively unexplored area rich in archaeological resources. This study provides three areas of exploration of the prehistoric Virgin Anasazi Pueblo period. Three research questions are posed. Are there substantial Virgin Puebloan sites on the Shivwits Plateau? Through compiled site data and analysis of settlement models the information supports the conclusion that there was a substantial prehistoric use of the Shivwits Plateau; A specific question about pottery production guides the second part of the research. Was the sherd-tempered Shivwits Plain and Shivwits Corrugated …

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva Jan 2002

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an attempt to apply the negotiated order perspective to the analysis of the lived experience of workers in two franchised fast food restaurants. Drawing primarily on the work of Anselm Strauss (1978) and D. H. J. Morgan (1975), I have examined data taken from auto-ethnographic and overt observation. I found that workers in different negotiation contexts would use implicit and explicit negotiation to achieve internal and external goals. Worker's negotiation strategies depended on the actor's individual proclivities and their interpretation of the negotiation context. Issues subject to negotiation included wages, the schedule, the amount of effort expended, …

Tumult Blossoms: Poems, Elyse Rachelle Arring Jan 2002

Tumult Blossoms: Poems, Elyse Rachelle Arring

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tumult Blossoms is a collection of original poetry that examines the formation of identity and the factors that determine it. Identity itself is treated as a fluid entity and explored in various guises, from that of the individual to that of a nation or species, with special emphasis placed on both migration and evolution. Within this exploration, close scrutiny is also granted to the relationship between human beings and their environment.

An Economic Analysis Of Women's Schooling On Fertility And Contraceptive Use In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Tanzania, Ayoub Shaban Ayoub

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the economic relationships between women's schooling, fertility rates, and contraceptive use in Tanzania where population growth and fertility rates are among the highest in the world and aggravate the already ailing economy. Two models are used: fertility and contraceptive use. The study surveys women ages 15 to 49 drawing on 1996 data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The study finds that women's schooling and other socioeconomic variables are important factors in explaining reproductive behavior. The fertility model indicates that education levels are consistently associated with lower fertility rates, while the contraceptive use model indicates that …

The Polar Expression Of Enso And Sea-Ice Variability As Recorded In A South Pole Ice Core, Eric A. Meyerson, Paul A. Mayewski, Karl J. Kreutz, L. David Meeker, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler Jan 2002

The Polar Expression Of Enso And Sea-Ice Variability As Recorded In A South Pole Ice Core, Eric A. Meyerson, Paul A. Mayewski, Karl J. Kreutz, L. David Meeker, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler

Faculty Publications

An annually dated ice core recovered from South Pole (2850 m a.s.l.) in 1995, that covers the period 1487–1992, was analyzed for the marine biogenic sulfur species methanesulfonate (MS). Empirical orthogonal function analysis is used to calibrate the high-resolution MS series with associated environmental series for the period of overlap (1973–92). Utilizing this calibration we present a ~500 year long proxy record of the polar expression of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and southeastern Pacific sea-ice extent variations. These records reveal short-term periods of increased (1800–50, 1900–40) and decreased sea-ice extent (1550–1610, 1660–1710, 1760–1800). In general, increased (decreased) sea-ice extent …

Do Tax-Deferred Exchanges Impact Purchase Price? Evidence From The Phoenix Apartment Market, Andrew Holmes, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2002

Do Tax-Deferred Exchanges Impact Purchase Price? Evidence From The Phoenix Apartment Market, Andrew Holmes, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Many authors have commented on the compliance risk associated with taxdeferred exchanges. However, no published studies explicitly address whether the risks associated with the exchange process impact the price at which exchanged assets trade. Using a unique data set that documents transactions for nondirect exchanges, this study examines the price impact of tax-deferred exchanges on apartment transactions in the Phoenix, Arizona, market. Consistent with the price pressure hypothesis originally developed by Scholes (1972) and Kraus and Stoll (1972) and the tax capitalization hypothesis proposed by Oates (1969), the data show that exchange participants pay an economically significant premium to acquire …

Governance Within The Navajo Nation: Have Democratic Traditions Taken Hold?, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This essay crafts a description and analysis of the political and institutional context, structures, and issues of the Navajo Nation's government. We begin with a demographic, institutional, and ideological assessment of the nation as its currently stands, move to a historical overview of the nation from precontact times to the 1989 riots and conclude with a short policy portfolio of three issues—land claims, gaming, and taxation—that will likely impact the shape and direction the nation will head into the twenty-first century.

A Manifesto For The Radical Middle, J.B. Ruhl Jan 2002

A Manifesto For The Radical Middle, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article advocates an active, concerted strategy for staking out the middle ground in environmental policy. The middle ground - the domain of "middle of the roaders" - has conventionally been defined by compromise, and as a result lacks any defining content and principles. I propose an aggressive middle that uses enriched sources of information, agency professional judgment, and transparent adaptive management as its components.

Responding To District Systemic Change: A Case Study Of Campus Leadership Team Member Responses Regarding School-Based Management, Mona Rae Davidson Briggs Jan 2002

Responding To District Systemic Change: A Case Study Of Campus Leadership Team Member Responses Regarding School-Based Management, Mona Rae Davidson Briggs

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this study was to explore to what extent school-based management (SBM) was being implemented in one urban middle school and to specifically analyze attitudes and perceptions of participants' beliefs and opinions around issues of power, information, knowledge, and rewards. A qualitative case study approach was used that included interviews with the Campus Leadership Team (CLT) members, observations, and review of relevant school and district documents. Study findings revealed that SBM was intended to be a strategy for ensuring that fundamental changes would take place to support improved student performance. While student academic achievement was the primary focus, …

Corporate And Products Identity In The Post-National Economy: Rethinking U.S. Trade Laws, Lan Cao Jan 2002

Corporate And Products Identity In The Post-National Economy: Rethinking U.S. Trade Laws, Lan Cao

Faculty Publications

In the global economy, a General Motors automobile may involve South Korean assembly; Japanese engines; German design and style engineering; Taiwanese, Singaporean, and Japanese small components; British advertising and marketing; and Irish and Barbadian data processing. What is the country of origin of this product? How should U.S. trade laws evaluate a product's origin, if it is a global composite with research, assembly, processing, and manufacturing performed in different countries? Similarly, corporations have become increasingly global in orientation and operations. Even "national" corporations have lost their territorial ties to the state of their nationality. Through a phenomenon termed "global outsourcing" …

Application Of A Rational Model In Gis For Flood Risk Assessment In Accra, Ghana Jan 2002

Application Of A Rational Model In Gis For Flood Risk Assessment In Accra, Ghana

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Accra has been experiencing periodic flooding that affect properties and lives. The government seeing the dangers involved has commissioned institutions such as Ministry of Works and Housing, Town and Country Planning and City Engineers to identify flood risk zones and adapt measures that will help reduce flood damages. These institutions identify flood risk zones using conventional methods such as watermarks on buildings and reported cases in the news media. Works carried out by these agencies were not able to give details about potential areas that are likely to experience this extreme event. Hence there was the need to find a …

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Land Use Change And Greenspace On Runoff Rates In An Urbanized Watershed, Kelly Anne Niemeyer

Student Work

This study utilizes the HEC-1 hydrologic model interface within the Watershed Modeling System (WMS) software program to analyze the impacts of urban development and greenspace within a sub-basin of the Papillion Creek Watershed in eastern Nebraska. The sub-basin, located in Douglas County, Nebraska, is currently 30% developed. Four additional land use scenarios were created. The first three scenarios represent a progression of land development from current to complete development. The fourth depicts a completely developed sub-basin with an added greenspace system. Digital terrain data was used within WMS to delineate the basin and its sub-basins. Runoff rates were generated for …

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford Jan 2002

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

What exactly does it mean to say that "legal relations" are becoming "internationalized"? For me, the concept is in large measure a vertical question: the degree to which international law is affecting (some might say encroaching on) traditional domestic law, particularly state law. This is particularly so with treaty law. In the United States at least, internationalization might be thought of as simply another arm of federalism, with Congress stipulating that certain sales of goods will be governed by international law, not the Uniform Commercial Code. Or that a certain category of child adoptions will be governed by federal treaty …
