Frank Chin, John Charles Goshert Jan 2002

Frank Chin, John Charles Goshert

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Born in Berkeley in 1940, Frank Chin lived in the Motherlode country of California’s Sierra foothills during the Second World War before returning to the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended the University of California at Berkeley as an English major, but was drawn away to work for railroad companies throughout the west. Such early experiences of movement and transience would provide the foundations for the shifting settings of much of his drama, fiction, and criticism that would follow; additionally, this transience would also underlie the complex tone, treatment, and perception of Asian American identity that characterizes his work and …

The Digital Divide And Equal Access To Justice, Mark Lloyd Jan 2002

The Digital Divide And Equal Access To Justice, Mark Lloyd

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article begins by considering the problem of equal access to justice between those with access to communication technology and those without. It then goes on to challenge the current market-centered technology by exploring some of the dangers and limits of new communications technology as a corrective to a problem that has long divided rich and poor, a problem that defines the degree to which we can truly call ourselves a civilization, and the real and important opportunities made possible by new technologies.

Variation In Overstory Nitrogen Uptake In A Small, High-Elevation Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Watershed, M. Barker, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas, I. F. Creed Jan 2002

Variation In Overstory Nitrogen Uptake In A Small, High-Elevation Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Watershed, M. Barker, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas, I. F. Creed

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

High-elevation red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) forests of the southern Appalachians exhibit considerable spatial heterogeneity in structure, and possibly in N uptake, because of a combination of natural disturbances and heavy fir mortality caused by infestations of the exotic balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratz). The objectives of this study are to determine spatial variability in tree N uptake in a small high-elevation catchment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, compare outcomes among calculation methods, and assess the influence of stand and landscape properties on N uptake. Tree N uptake is estimated …

Erroneous And Unconfirmed Bird Records From Belize: Setting The Record Straight, H. Lee Jones Jan 2002

Erroneous And Unconfirmed Bird Records From Belize: Setting The Record Straight, H. Lee Jones

Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club

45 species for which confirmation appears to be lacking, are reviewed in this paper. Some have undoubtedly occurred and only lack proper documentation, others (primarily migratory species) have the potential to occur but fall short of having the minimum required documentation, and still others (mostly sedentary or near-sedentary species) are highly improbable and are, no doubt, based on misidentifications. My placement of these species in the above categories (Table 1) is, of course, somewhat arbitrary, and to some degree reflects my consideration about their likelihood of occurrence. Until we learn more about patterns of dispersal, especially in the nocturnal, hard-to-identify, …

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On Woodlands In Central Iowa, Cathy Mabry Jan 2002

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On Woodlands In Central Iowa, Cathy Mabry

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's forests have undergone a dramatic decline in area since settlement by Europeans. Most of the remaining forests have been degraded by an assortment of human impacts, with cattle grazing the most prominent among them. Using a matched pairs study designed to control for environmental differences among plots, I examined the impact of cattle grazing on the forest understory, canopy trees, and tree regeneration. There were distinct groups of understory species associated with ungrazed and grazed plots. Species associated with ungrazed plots were all native and tended to be perennial herbs with fleshy roots. Ungrazed plots also had species preferring …

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jan 2002

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

For most of us, the collapse of the World Trade Center towers exists at the outermost edge of human comprehension. Even after one visits Ground Zero, the events of 9/11 retain a surreal quality, invoking feelings beyond words as one tries to contemplate losses immeasurable with numbers. Indeed, the insurance losses are insignificant when compared to the human tragedies caused by the terrorist attacks-and in insurance terms, we witnessed the most costly, complex events to transpire in a single day in the history of the planet. Many years will pass before all the insurance ramifications of 9/11 are sorted out.

Identity, Culture And The National Narrative: Shirley Geok-Lin Lim S Joss And Gold, S.P. Gabriel Jan 2002

Identity, Culture And The National Narrative: Shirley Geok-Lin Lim S Joss And Gold, S.P. Gabriel

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Shirley Lim's first novel continues many of the chief concerns that characterise her body of writings, which to-date comprises several collections of poetry, short fiction and academic articles, as well as a book of memoirs. The perplexities of constructing identity across cultures and continents, the dislocations wrought by history, issues of gender and race and the complexities of interpersonal relationships all return here, as extended meditations, and provide the rich complex of ideas out of which Lim structures her first novel. Joss and Gold is a novel whose three parts are separated, but only tenuously, by "geography and the distance …
