Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Kenneth Helphand Jan 2002

Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Kenneth Helphand

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Most settlers and visitors to Colorado came across the Plains, watching the Front Range of the Rockies slowly materialize from what seems to be a mirage on the horizon. While the eastern third of the state is within the Great Plains, it is the mountains and beyond that dominate our perception. William Wycoff uses Colorado's diverse and distinctive regions as a framework for his fine historical and cultural geography of the state. Appropriately, he begins with the mountains, the state's spiritual heart, and then visits the Piedmont Heartland, that zone between mountain and Plain where Denver and most of the …

The Making Of Little Sweden, Usa, Steven M. Schnell Jan 2002

The Making Of Little Sweden, Usa, Steven M. Schnell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Ethnic tourism in the United States has become big business. An estimated six billion dollars were spent on various forms of "heritage tourism" (including ethnic tourism) in the US in 1995 alone.1 At first glance, this desire for roots and tradition within an American public more often noted for its worship of progress and individualism may seem surprising. Yet as Americans have become increasingly mobile, wired, and rootless,2 many have become disillusioned with the growing urbanization and industrialization of their society3 and have begun efforts to recapture a sense of what they perceive as traditional rural community. …

A Biographical Study Of Elizabeth D. Kane, Darcee D. Barnes Jan 2002

A Biographical Study Of Elizabeth D. Kane, Darcee D. Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

This is a biographical study of Elizabeth D. Kane (1836-1909), travel writer and wife of Thomas L. Kane, non-Mormon friend of the nineteenth-century Mormons of Utah. Primary source materials are mainly Elizabeth's fourteen diaries (spanning the years 1853 to 1909), letters and narrative accounts. Elizabeth was greatly influenced by Thomas, while maintaining her independence. She was interested in religion and feminist issues, and those interests, combined with her marital relationship, shaped her life's direction. Thomas Kane's interest in the Mormons also influenced Elizabeth's religious and feminist views, and she initially struggled with accepting Thomas's work for them because of their …

The Colored Man Standing By The Punch Bowl, Michael K. Jordan Jan 2002

The Colored Man Standing By The Punch Bowl, Michael K. Jordan

Faculty Scholarship

This essay will explore racial dissonance and how it affects our thinking about race relations and social policy in America. The first part of this essay will examine the concept of race. Though we often think of race as delineating real characteristics that exist objectively, race is actually a socially created abstraction. In addition, how this abstraction changes over time will also be explored. This is another way of saying that "colored people" has been replaced by the term "black people." The difference between the two terms raises important questions about social policy. Next, this article explores the connection among …

Runaway/Thrownaway Children: National Estimates And Characteristics, Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlak

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The words “missing child” call to mind tragic and frightening kidnappings reported in the national news. But a child can be missing for many reasons, and the problem of missing children is far more complex than the headlines suggest. Getting a clear picture of how many children become missing—and why—is an important step in addressing the problem. This series of Bulletins provides that clear picture by summarizing findings from the Second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART–2). The series offers national estimates of missing children based on surveys of households, juvenile residential facilities, and law …
