On The Edge Of Scarcity: Environment, Resources, Population, Sustainability, And Conflict, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann Feb 2002

On The Edge Of Scarcity: Environment, Resources, Population, Sustainability, And Conflict, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

These essays address one of the most pressing and significant issues that humanity has confronted to date - the lack of life-sustaining resources. Michael N. Dobkowski and Isidor Wallimann establish a disturbing but realistic scenario of the disastrous future that awaits humankind as surplus populations collide with dwindling resources. Authors consider a number of cause-and-effect situations on industrialization, biophysical limits, exponential population growth, and genocide, to name a few. This volume is a critical contribution to the field and will serve as an ideal introduction to courses in the environment, population, resources, genocide, and social conflict.

Military Conservation Partnerships, Laura M. Caballero Feb 2002

Military Conservation Partnerships, Laura M. Caballero

Master's Projects

The military has unintentionally become a steward of some of our country’s most precious natural resources. Many military installations surrounded by encroaching urbanization have earned reputations for being “islands of biodiversity” (Army Congressional Testimony to Senate Armed Forces Committee, 2001). Military training land provides a safe harbor for wildlife displaced by urban development. In addition, most military installations escape erosion problems caused by high-density development and boast some of the purest wetlands in their communities. Military installations also provide communities with excellent recreation opportunities, from wildlife viewing and hiking to hunting and fishing. The military takes pride in its commitment …

Visual Predators Select For Crypticity And Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil Feb 2002

Visual Predators Select For Crypticity And Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Cryptically colored animals commonly occur in several distinct pattern variants. Such phenotypic diversity may be promoted by frequency-dependent predation, in which more abundant variants are attacked disproportionately often, but the hypothesis has never been explicitly tested. Here we report the first controlled experiment on the effects of visual predators on prey crypticity and phenotypic variance, in which blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) searched for digital moths on computer monitors. Moth phenotypes evolved via a genetic algorithm in which individuals detected by the jays were much less likely to reproduce. Jays often failed to detect atypical cryptic moths, confirming frequency- …

The American People In Crisis: A Content Analysis, Roderick P. Hart, Sharon E. Jarvis, Elvin T. Lim Feb 2002

The American People In Crisis: A Content Analysis, Roderick P. Hart, Sharon E. Jarvis, Elvin T. Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study examines how images of the American electorate were deployed after the11 September 2001 terrorism incident and during the Clinton impeachment. Transcripts of congressional proceedings, news coverage, and presidential campaign addresses were analyzed to determine how the phrase the American people was used during these two crises and in unrelated presidential campaign speeches. The analysis considered the roles, actions, qualities, and circumstances ascribed to the people, as well as the time orientation and the forces aligned against the people. The results show that (1) relative to presidential campaign rhetoric, both crises resulted in greater concentration on the electorate; (2) …

Improving Science Education In The 4-H Geology Project, Virginia D. Bourdeau Feb 2002

Improving Science Education In The 4-H Geology Project, Virginia D. Bourdeau

Journal of Extension

To move the 4-H Geology project beyond a focus on rock and mineral collections and introduce youth to science concepts and geologic processes, a 4-H Earth Science Leader Guide was developed. State-wide workshops and the creation of Earth Science Materials Kits were key elements of the first year's success. The result is both an increase in youth enrollment in the 4-H Geology project and an increased county staff capacity to support science education programs.

Development Of Analytical Systems And Monitoring Of Vocs Emissions During Polymer Processing, Qin Xiang Jan 2002

Development Of Analytical Systems And Monitoring Of Vocs Emissions During Polymer Processing, Qin Xiang

Dissertations

A method using direct flame ionization detector (FID) measurement was developed to study total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions during thermal degradation of polymers. This was used to estimate organic emissions from both virgin polymer resins and commingled plastics. The effects of process parameters, i. e., temperature, heating rate and residence time, were also studied. Significant VOCs emissions were observed at normal processing temperatures, particularly from recycled polymers. Each polymer showed a distinct evolution pattern during its thermal degradation. Kinetics of VOCs emissions were also studied using a non-isothermal technique. The kinetic parameters were in agreement with data from the …

The Voice: 2001-2011

In this edition of the Wooster Voice, the headline story is the million dollar gap in the Endowment. Due to this gap, College officials had to cut costs and trim the budget. A large number of the articles in this issue of the Voice are in relation to this million dollar gap. This is an issue that affected campus greatly. The other front page article details the delay of the new health center opening. Due to an issue with the electrical work, the health center was delayed until April. There are other articles about this delay and the general subject …
